ARK SPIRIT
The Road He Still Chose
Hao Nhien stepped forward instinctively.
But the distant figure did not come any closer.
No matter how many steps he took, the distance remained unchanged.
A familiar feeling rose within him.
It was the same feeling he had carried throughout his search for Anh Nhien.
At times, he thought he had finally come close to an answer.
Then immediately afterward, he would discover more unknown lands ahead.
One clue led to another.
One meeting opened more questions.
And Anh Nhien’s true location remained beyond reach.
Hao Nhien stopped and looked down the long road.
A question surfaced—one he had rarely allowed himself to consider for very long.
Was he even going in the right direction?
If every clue he followed only led elsewhere—
if Anh Nhien ultimately was not where he had been searching—
then what would all those years become?
He was not afraid of traveling far.
Nor did he fear danger.
But the farther he went, the more people he encountered.
And with each encounter came new responsibilities.
Every decision no longer affected only himself.
Sometimes other people changed their plans, made different choices, or accepted dangers that had never originally belonged to them.
Hao Nhien could not deny that.
He wanted to find Anh Nhien.
But was that desire enough to justify everything that might happen along the way?
The scenery around him changed.
Another life appeared.
In that life, Hao Nhien returned somewhere familiar.
He stopped traveling into unknown lands.
He had time to remain with those already beside him.
To handle the affairs of the Hoa Ky Clan.
To search for a way to heal Tieu Lan.
No unknown regions.
No journeys filled with uncertainty.
It was not a bad life.
Hao Nhien watched for a long time.
He even felt a kind of peace that had been almost absent from his life in recent years.
Then he looked toward the other road.
It still stretched beyond anything he could see.
It promised no result.
It did not guarantee that everyone he met would remain safe.
If he continued, he could still fail.
That had not changed.
Hao Nhien slowly sat beside the road.
He was accustomed to meeting difficulties by searching for a solution.
But this time, there was not enough information to calculate anything.
No one could tell him how far he needed to travel before finding Anh Nhien.
No method could guarantee that future choices would not create consequences he had never expected.
If he only agreed to begin a journey after success was guaranteed, perhaps he would never leave the place where he stood.
But that did not mean every journey deserved to continue no matter the cost.
Hao Nhien lowered his head.
He had seen people hold onto a goal so tightly that they were willing to sacrifice everything around them.
He had faced enemies who believed that as long as the final result was important enough, any method could be justified.
He did not want to become someone like that.
If one day searching for Anh Nhien required sacrificing innocent people, would he still have enough clarity to stop?
If a clue proved false, would he be willing to change direction?
Or would he keep following it simply because he had already spent too much time?
Hao Nhien did not answer immediately.
Those questions could not be resolved by simply declaring that he would always do the right thing.
He had judged situations incorrectly before.
He had paid prices.
Others had suffered because of decisions he made.
There was no reason to assume he would never make another mistake.
And precisely because of that, he did not want to bind himself to a choice merely because he had made it in the past.
Hao Nhien looked toward the endless road.
He still wanted to find Anh Nhien.
That desire had never changed.
But if what waited ahead proved different from what he believed, then he needed enough clarity to reconsider.
Not continue walking merely because he refused to admit he might have been wrong.
With that thought, Hao Nhien slowly stood.
He looked one final time toward the path leading back to a stable life.

Choosing to return would not be shameful.
Nor would it necessarily be wrong.
Perhaps under different circumstances, even he would choose that road.
But right now, there were still clues he had not verified.
Promises he had not fulfilled.
If he stopped merely because he could not yet see the ending, Hao Nhien knew he would never be at peace.
He turned toward the road where Anh Nhien stood.
Then began walking.
The ground beneath him trembled faintly.
The peaceful life at his side slowly receded.
Hao Nhien did not run toward Anh Nhien’s silhouette.
Nor did he try to shorten the distance with hurried steps.
He simply continued forward.
His eyes remained on the path ahead while still watching the changes around him.
After a while, scenes began appearing again.
Tieu Lan.
Quan Nha.
Anh Nhien.
They appeared one after another, interwoven with the lands Hao Nhien had visited and the people he had met.
He realized many events in the past that once seemed unrelated had later influenced his decisions.
One meeting could become a promise.
One promise could take him to another land.
There, new people and new events would appear.
Hao Nhien did not know whether those connections were merely the kind anyone could discover when looking back over their life—
or whether some deeper law truly lay hidden beneath them.
The thought passed through him.
He did not try to explain it.
Perhaps one day, after traveling far enough, he would understand more.
For now, what drew his attention was the way the scenes before him were changing.
They no longer followed the order of his memories.
Instead, they separated into distinct regions of light.
The road beneath his feet slowly disappeared.
Hao Nhien stopped.
He found himself standing once again upon a stone platform, similar to the one he had reached after passing through the Realm of Circumstances.
Below the platform, separate spaces began appearing.
Each contained a person.
Hao Nhien looked around.
Immediately, he noticed a major difference.
In the Realm of Circumstances, he had been able to see the terrain and the forces others were confronting.
This time, each person faced only a dim, indistinct emptiness.
Neither his eyes nor his spiritual sense could see what existed within it.
He could observe only the people themselves.
A middle-aged man was kneeling on the stone floor.
Both hands stretched forward as though desperately trying to hold onto something.
The pain on his face made Hao Nhien stop.
Again and again, the man tried to stand.
But every time he raised his head toward the empty space before him, his entire body trembled before collapsing once more.
Hao Nhien did not know what the man was seeing.
Perhaps someone he had lost.
Perhaps something he could never change.
Perhaps a choice that had cost him dearly.
Whatever the reason, the despair was so genuine that even an outside observer could feel part of its weight.
In another region, a man in gray robes repeatedly shook his head and swung his arms at the empty space before him.
He seemed to be arguing with someone.
No sound escaped.
Every time he tried moving in another direction, he somehow returned to the same place.
His anger gradually became panic.
Farther away, a young female cultivator sat curled on the stone floor.
Her eyes stared blankly ahead.
She did not cry.
Did not resist.
Only occasionally moved her lips, as though speaking to someone Hao Nhien could not see.
Watching them reminded Hao Nhien of himself not long before.
Before Tieu Lan, he had wanted to reach out and hold her.
Facing Quan Nha, there had been moments when he did not know how to answer.
And before the road leading toward Anh Nhien, he too had stopped for a long time before continuing.
If someone had been watching him from outside, what would they have thought?
Perhaps they would have seen only a Hao Nhien hesitating.
Suffering.
Standing motionless before empty space.
They would never know which memories had made him that way.
Hao Nhien continued looking through the different spaces.
Then he saw Lang Tuyet.
She stood on a flat stone surface.
Before her was the same darkness Hao Nhien could not see through.
Unlike the others, Lang Tuyet did not appear desperate or panicked.
But tension was clearly visible across her face.
One hand had risen halfway to her chest.
As though she were about to perform some action.
Then it stopped.
Hao Nhien frowned slightly.
He was accustomed to seeing Lang Tuyet make firm decisions.
Even while handling complicated transactions or unexpected situations, she usually remained calm and chose quickly.
Yet now she stood motionless for a very long time.
At one point, Lang Tuyet lowered her head.
The hand she had raised slowly fell.
After a while, she looked ahead again.
The hesitation remained.
Hao Nhien had no idea what she was facing.
He only knew it was not an easy choice.
Lang Tuyet remained there.
Her fingers tightened slightly.
She seemed about to reach forward again.
But once more, she stopped before completing the movement.
Hao Nhien had never seen her like this.
Even when she had spoken about things that needed preparation within the Heavenly Treasure Pavilion, she rarely revealed such inner conflict.
Perhaps because he was so accustomed to seeing her confident and faintly mischievous, the silence now felt especially unfamiliar.
A long time passed.
Finally, Lang Tuyet slowly closed her eyes.
When she opened them again, she was still looking forward.
The tension had not disappeared completely.
But this time, her hand did not stop halfway.
She reached out.
Then made a pushing motion.
Hao Nhien paused.
From where he stood, there was nothing before her.
No person.
No object.
No sign explaining what that gesture meant.
But the instant she completed it, her entire body became rigid.
Lang Tuyet held the position.
Her eyes never left the space ahead.
Only after a long while did she slowly withdraw her hand.
Hao Nhien saw her shoulders sink slightly.
There was no relief on her face.
She remained still.
As though waiting for something to happen.
Eventually, she only raised her head in silence.
A region of light appeared ahead of her.
Lang Tuyet stared at it for a long time.
Then stepped forward.
Her first step was slow.
After that, she did not stop again.
When she entered the light, the surrounding images began to fade.
Hao Nhien continued watching.
He did not know what Lang Tuyet had chosen.
Nor why it had taken her so long before she could complete that simple pushing motion.
From the outside, such a gesture explained almost nothing.
It could have been rejection.
A decision she was forced to make.
Or something entirely different.
What drew Hao Nhien’s attention was not the motion itself.
It was her expression before and after.
He had never seen Lang Tuyet look so burdened.
Even that was not enough to justify any conclusion.
Hao Nhien suddenly wondered—
if Lang Tuyet had been able to watch his trial from outside, how much would she have understood?
Perhaps she would have seen him standing before empty space for a long time.
Occasionally reaching out.
Stopping.
Then finally walking down a road no one else could see.
She might have guessed that he faced a difficult choice.
But she would never know that Tieu Lan, Quan Nha, and Anh Nhien had stood before him.
Nor what had caused him to continue forward.
Thinking of that, Hao Nhien withdrew his gaze.
He did not attempt to understand more about Lang Tuyet’s trial.
If one day she wanted to speak about it, he would listen.
But incomplete images were not enough for him to reach any conclusion.
The spaces below began fading one after another.
The middle-aged man remained kneeling.
His hands continued reaching toward the emptiness.
The gray-robed man had stopped raging, but still could not move forward.
Farther away, the young woman remained seated, her gaze fixed upon something only she could see.
Hao Nhien did not know what they had experienced.
Perhaps some had made mistakes that could never be repaired.
Perhaps others had done everything they could and still received a heartbreaking ending.
He suddenly remembered Lang Tuyet again.
She had stood for a long time before reaching out.
Even after she passed through, the heaviness had not disappeared from her face.
Hao Nhien did not know what she had chosen.
But he had the feeling that if the same scene appeared before her again, she would still need just as long to decide.
What about himself?
The images of Tieu Lan, Quan Nha, and Anh Nhien remained vivid in his mind.
There were things he regretted.
Shortcomings he only recognized now.
Consequences that still weighed heavily on him.
Yet when he remembered the moments in which he had been forced to decide, he still understood why he had chosen as he did.
If he could return with everything he knew now, he would certainly do many things differently.
But if he possessed only what he had known at the time—
standing in the exact same circumstances—
would he truly choose a different path?
Hao Nhien thought for a long time.
Then slowly exhaled.
Probably not.
The answer did not make the past any lighter.
Tieu Lan still had not awakened.
His promise to Quan Nha remained.
The search for Anh Nhien still had no end in sight.
Nor did Hao Nhien believe everything he had done had been correct.
He simply understood that some things he wished to change because he had learned more since then—
while other choices, even knowing the results he now had to endure, still possessed reasons he could not deny.
Hao Nhien looked toward the final spaces disappearing below.
He did not know what prevented those people from moving on.
Nor did he believe he fully understood the trial.
A thought quietly appeared within him.
Perhaps what kept a person trapped was not simply how painful the past had been.
Even after passing through, Lang Tuyet still carried her burden.
And Hao Nhien had not abandoned the things that caused him regret either.
Then what allowed someone to turn back, look upon the road they had already walked—
and still possess enough faith in themselves to continue?
Hao Nhien did not try to answer immediately.
The stone platform beneath him trembled.
A path of light slowly opened ahead.
He stood there for another moment.
Looked once more toward the empty spaces where the others had disappeared.
Then turned toward the new road.
At last, he stepped forward.
And carried every memory the Realm of the Past had forced him to confront with him.
