Apocalypse: the Most Ruthless Person
Chapter 758 - 629: News of Awakened Animals
Each directive was delivered precisely, letting everyone know what they should do, helping people get moving.
Thanks to Zhang Su’s swift warning, no one on Celestial Horse Island was seriously injured, with at most some minor scrapes. Once they received the instructions, they moved quickly and decisively.
"Quick, quick, quick, move! Take your gear and head down the mountain; I’ll be there shortly. Be sure to guard against zombie ambushes!"
After reminding them again, Zhang Su ran upstairs to head home. He saw that Program No. 1 was sitting quietly in the room, with nothing unusual, which eased his concern.
"Howl howl."
As Zhang Su was about to leave, Program No. 1 made a sound.
Zhang Su turned back towards the program, guessing she wanted to know what had just happened, so he explained, "There was an explosion elsewhere, and the shockwave affected our camp. No big issues, just the windows here are broken. Go stay in the bedroom inside."
Program No. 1’s eyes flickered like a breathing light, she nodded gently, stood up, and walked towards the inner room.
Watching Program No. 1’s increasingly smooth steps, Zhang Su noticed her progress seemed decent. After she entered the bedroom, he locked the door and left the house.
Arriving downstairs, a "Flash" darted to the dilapidated gate of Little Lucky.
"Good Fortune? Are you okay... Wow, did you catch these? That was fast!"
Good Fortune’s fur wasn’t even ruffled, his chest was heaving, and two wisps of white air sprayed from his nostrils powerfully. He carried a chicken and a duck in his mouth, both a bit droopy but still flapping their wings occasionally, clearly still alive.
Unable to speak, Good Fortune gestured with his paw towards the mountain.
"Come, put them in the kitchen first! Great work, well done. Go ahead and catch the blown-away chickens and ducks, just throw them all into the kitchen, and you’ll get a reward later."
The window of Little Lucky’s kitchen wasn’t big, and the opening was high, so once the chickens and ducks were inside, they couldn’t escape.
Good Fortune was delighted to hear this. He wagged his tail and leaped into the window, tossed the chicken and duck inside, turned around, and dashed off, quick and clean.
"Mr. Zhang, that little dog, Good Fortune, is quite special, isn’t it? It understands human speech, is intelligent, and very strong in battle, right?"
The five people from Dragon Head Camp were cleaning up Little Lucky’s yard on their own initiative. They had witnessed Zhang Su and Good Fortune’s conversation, and after Good Fortune ran off, Shen Linrui approached Zhang Su and asked.
Upon hearing Shen Linrui’s question, Zhang Su’s gaze flickered, "You seem to know a lot. Does Captain Shen have a similar animal companion?"
To Zhang Su now, Good Fortune wasn’t just a beast or a pet, but a full-fledged companion, a secret member of the Yama Corps.
The people from Dragon Head Camp exchanged smiles, and Shen Linrui replied, "To be honest, Dragon Head Camp has a similar little guy. It’s incredibly impressive, better at killing zombies than anyone at our camp, unless guns are involved."
"Oh? That’s impressive. I’d love to meet it if I get the chance. Can you tell me what kind of animal it is?"
This was the first time Zhang Su heard of other awakened animals. He took out a cigarette and handed it around to share with the others.
"Thank you..."
Shen Linrui took a cigarette, lit it, and smiled, "It’s a hamster. Its owner, a thirteen-year-old girl named Jiajia, has also risen in status because of it. When Jiajia first arrived at the camp, you know how it is as you are a leader in your area, there were guys who wanted to do something to her, but Flash taught them a lesson. The worst-off one was even bitten to death by Flash!"
"Flash is the name of that hamster. Of course, the leader found out about it later. Initially, he wanted to trade supplies for Flash, but Jiajia refused, and Flash wasn’t willing either, so it didn’t work out. After several negotiations, Jiajia agreed to let Flash help out at the camp, which gave her a peaceful life."
Zhang Su silently noted that while Shen Linrui spoke mildly, some dark tactics were implied. However, these were normal, and what puzzled him was what a little hamster could do.
"Helping the camp? A small little guy, what does it usually do at the camp?"
"Haha! Don’t underestimate Flash, it’s small and fluffy, but it’s incredibly fast at digging. With Flash’s help, the camp’s greenhouses have it handle the tilling and even some weeding, saving more hassle than using a farming machine. A bag of jerky keeps it busy over an acre of land, quite cost-effective!"
Shen Linrui spoke about Flash with a smile, showing his fondness for the little creature.
Zhang Su touched his cheek, imagining the scene of a hamster plowing and weeding. He didn’t doubt it but found it particularly bizarre. Shaking his head with a smile, he asked, "Sounds like Flash has strong forelimbs. Has it ever been involved in killing zombies?"
"Sure, we let it, given how fierce its claws are, but it wasn’t willing, and Jiajia couldn’t bear to let it either."
Shen Linrui spread his hands.
"Alright... A little girl cherishing her pet companion is understandable. If I get the chance, I’d really like to see Flash. Anyway, don’t keep yourselves busy here; go down the mountain and check out the situation. Many people are injured down there and need help."
Zhang Su invited the five from Dragon Head Camp to join him, mainly because he didn’t want them staying at Little Lucky.
After leaving the yard, Zhang Su found someone to lead the five from Dragon Head Camp down the mountain while he ran towards Cui Leng Pavilion.
"Hm? Old Duan, Dr. Fu, you’re here as well."
Arriving at Cui Leng Pavilion, Zhang Su saw that Duan Wuhu, Fu Weijun, Xie Yanshan, and Zuo Fengjuan were busy cleaning. Even Qiu Hui, who had only one leg left, was helping, supporting herself with a cane to sweep the floor.
"Sigh, Weijun can’t engage in research but wanted to help with the cleanup, so here we are. I don’t even know what he’s capable of, he just sits there, leaving everything for me."
Duan Wuhu grumbled while handling the garbage and debris.
"Mr. Zhang, rest assured. There’s nothing major at Cui Leng Pavilion, you see, only some smashed windows and doors, the important stuff remains intact."
Xie Yanshan knew why Zhang Su rushed over, so he quickly reported to set his mind at ease.
"Alright, all of you, stay safe. I’m heading down the mountain; things aren’t looking good down there!"
With that, Zhang Su left Cui Leng Pavilion.
The camp’s damage was actually not as severe as expected, because the locations of the inns were varied, not all were as unlucky as Little Lucky...
For instance, Wangshan Inn, because of its location, wasn’t hit head-on, and Cui Leng Pavilion, serving as a laboratory, was also fine. Jingxin Garden, where Ju Mumio resides, was likewise not directly hit by the shockwave, just slightly affected, with some damage but nothing severe.
Ding Yong Country’s newly erected smithy shed itself was fine, unfortunately, half of it was crushed by a flying window from who-knows-where and ignited by red-hot steel blocks. Luckily the fire wasn’t big and was immediately controlled.
Seventy percent of the parking lot’s vehicles had shattered glass, more than a dozen lightweight vans flipped over, and the chubby 003 slept soundly. The Fire-breathing Zombie remained quiet and unaffected.
Of the two vegetable sheds, one was incredibly lucky, entirely unaffected. The other was half-destroyed, even the roof was gone, only the lonely frame sticking into the ground. Fortunately, it didn’t collapse completely, otherwise, the lit stove would have caused a fire.
Yi Xiaoling, Mo Qianlan, and others divided the work. Some were hurriedly harvesting vegetables by flashlight to save them before they froze, as these were precious food resources!
Those adept at handiwork were busy repairing the greenhouses.
The pigs and sheep had the best situation, unharmed, as they were originally housed inside the inn buildings. Due to the shockwave, cold air rushed inside, causing the pigs to huddle together shivering. As for the sheep, they lay leisurely, chewing on grass...
The most troublesome issue was the damage to the lines. The painstakingly erected electricity and surveillance signal transmission lines all needed redoing, and some surveillance cameras were unaccounted for.
