Apocalypse: the Most Ruthless Person
Chapter 749: Physical Fitness Enhanced
Chapter 749: Chapter 620: Physical Fitness Enhanced
The selection test rules were clear, leaving no one in the crowd in doubt.
The group led by Zhang Su remained silent. He said, “Starting from the Barracks Branch, groups of ten people. Xiaoshuai, you, Dakun, and Zhou Haotian will organize everyone into lines. Teacher Yu, you’ll be in charge of recording the scores, and I’ll do the timing!”
After speaking, he pulled a phone from his bag and walked toward the finish line.
Excluding Yama Corps members, there were a total of one hundred and fifty-two combat personnel participating in the selection, one hundred and thirty of whom were men and twenty-two women. Most of the women came from the previous female squad, and the number of new female combat personnel was extremely low, only four, even less than the female members of the Yama Corps.
From this, it’s evident that the Survivor Camp has not fully considered the role of women members internally. When men and women fight together, women naturally bring an aura of enhancement, igniting men’s competitive desire in battle.
If we could train women like the Yama Corps, treating them like livestock, it would be even better…
Two to three hundred people gathered to watch on the barren field, while over a dozen Yama Corps members held guns and stood guard in the outer area. With each shout of “Ready, start,” dust flew as all participants in the test exerted themselves and ran furiously.
The first test, a two-hundred-meter run, proceeded very quickly.
Groups of ten could be tested in less than a minute. For men, there were thirteen groups; for women, twenty-two were divided into two groups, a total of fifteen groups completed in one-quarter of an hour—all steps achieved with high efficiency.
Zhang Su set a standard close to that of a national second-level athlete, and the women’s standard was even stricter than that of a second-level athlete.
Over the five months since the apocalypse, everyone has undergone significant training, squeezing potential near the edge of life and death. Yet, under such strict criteria, fifty-three men met the standard, over a third, and seven women met the standard, close to a third—an overwhelmingly impressive result!
For this outcome, Zhang Su and Yuwen nodded to each other.
Some individuals’ performances caught Zhang Su’s special attention.
First was the first-place finisher, whom he imagined would emerge from the most formidable fighters, only to find out it was the Knight of Light, Fan Dahai, the slender bamboo pole!
With a time of twenty-two seconds and ninety-six hundredths, Fan Dahai clinched first place. On a regular track, wearing competition spikes, slipping under twenty-two seconds would be easy—equivalent to a national first-level athlete!
There was no suspense in the women’s group; the top spot went to Ma Xueyan, who had previously voiced her opinion. Her results were shining, having reached the threshold of the national first-level athlete standard. By Zhang Su’s estimation, electronic timing should have already reached first-level athlete standards, but the stopwatch was slightly slower.
Among those who surprised Zhang Su was the limping Xie Guangfa. Due to his limp, his running posture appeared odd and did not meet the standard, falling short by only two-tenths of a second, roughly just over a meter—quite a shame.
The performance of the milk delivery man, Old Wang, was also unexpected. Wang Guangjun was among the oldest of all the combatants yet scraped by just above the qualifying line, alongside Zheng Ziwen at a similar level!
Interestingly, Wang Zhetao was slower than his father by half a second, ranking approximately in the bottom twenty among the tested individuals. In the past, it might have been considered decent, maybe even earning a college award, but now it’s seen quite poorly.
Tian Fan lived in the same neighborhood as Zhang Su. Even missing an arm, his running speed was slightly quicker than Wang Zhetao’s but also failed to meet the standard.
Su Xiaoya did not meet the standard either. Despite her physical enhancements and training, her running speed was at the bottom among female members—something Zhang Su had anticipated.
As expected, all former members who were tasked with strength met the standards with no surprises.
Since Zhang Su had to provide results to Yuwen, some participants heard their scores and were amazed, either surprised at how fast they were or amazed at their own prowess.
“Old Yu, seems your earlier intuition was spot on!”
Zhang Su took the notebook from Yuwen, examining the rows of recorded seconds, speaking softly.
“Indeed, without enhancement, no one would exhibit such exceptional performance.”
Yuwen wore a face of joy and relief. Nearly sixty years old, aligning with modern human lifespan, he should have entered old age with all vital signs declining, yet he felt a subtle vitality reborn!
Their physical condition had optimally improved post-apocalypse. If there hadn’t been fundamental enhancements to their bodies, some might have been driven to waste but still could not have run at such speeds, especially for those in their forties and fifties.
They could be robust, swishing sledgehammers, but traditionally running had been their weakness due to it not being necessary in daily life. Yet now, each could approach second-level athlete standards under such harsh conditions.
“Had today’s test been held in a professional stadium with specialized equipment, everyone’s speed could improve by at least two seconds! This is practically national games level!”
Zhang Su clicked his tongue. The group of survivors was diverse, comprised of people from all walks before the disaster. There were barely any professional athletes, yet now each one is capable of attending provincial games and some even Asian Games!
It’s understandable that some in the group performed poorly; saying poorly, they have improved drastically compared to before. It’s likely due to individual differences, with varying degrees of body enhancement and lack of training leading to considerable disparity.
“If so, let’s set higher standards for the next event!” Zhang Su pondered privately and approached the crowd, asserting.
“Speed bursts are the essence of survival. From this test, your performances were acceptable, but many have exerted themselves excessively during the mere two hundred meters. In the current situation, you’d barely outpace ordinary zombies by fifty meters. You must push yourselves for longer durations to avoid danger!”
The results were indeed satisfactory, but the crisis persisted. Everyone realized the truth and did not feel relieved; confidence did not equate to arrogance.
“Next is the second test: the vertical reach. It’s not a traditional sports event, but has related tests within the police force. The standard for men is two meters sixty-five and for women it’s two meters thirty, but as you know, the police face criminals while we confront zombies as fierce as mad dogs—standards need to be higher!”
Upon hearing Zhang Su’s words, everyone reluctantly pouted.
Reaching two meters sixty-five and two meters thirty was almost within easy reach for the current participants; good things rarely came easily.
“Come, have a look here!” Zhang Su signaled Pang Dakun to lift the pole: “This pole sets the male member standard at three meters twenty, fifteen centimeters taller than a basketball hoop—no issues should arise for anyone here!”
The basketball hoop’s height is three meters five. For adult males over one meter seventy-five, touching it after training with a running start isn’t hard. Adding fifteen centimeters and jumping from a standstill on unfavorable ground with poor gear created pressure for many internally.
