Chapter 56: Chapter 53: Outside the Unit Door

Zheng Xinyu couldn’t hear the conversation between the Duan Brothers and saw no further action from Zhang Su. She crouched down and sneakily poked her head out for a look, surprised to find two men squatting behind the iron door, mumbling.

Moments later, Zheng Xinyu saw the two open the door and step outside, their crouched and stealthy figures even seemed a bit comical.

“Brother Su, why aren’t we going with them?”

Zheng Xinyu stood up and asked softly.

“Have you already forgotten about Brother Xiang’s situation? Do you know if they are humans or ghosts?” Zhang Su replied to Zheng Xinyu while seriously listening for any sounds.

“I… Brother Su, look, they should be the survivors from downstairs. They haven’t gone upstairs to gather supplies these past few days, not even touching the stuff from each household. People like this shouldn’t be too bad, right?”

Zheng Xinyu analyzed clearly.

Zhang Su paused briefly before nodding in agreement and said, “You’re right, even if they’re not bad people, we can’t guarantee they won’t see us as ghosts. Suspicion is mutual.”

Without sufficient confidence, Zhang Su didn’t plan to team up with others rashly. Besides, he felt that the owner of that timid voice seemed unreliable!

Zheng Xinyu and Zhong Xiaoshan both nodded, feeling that Zhang Su was right. In this current era, zombies are certainly dangerous, but fellow humans aren’t necessarily safe either. Everyone is cautious, which inevitably leads to misunderstandings and friction.

Instead of wasting energy on internal conflicts, why not focus on fighting zombies!

“They’re definitely going to start a vehicle, let’s wait and see!”

Zhang Su dared not approach the iron door recklessly, fearing that the two might return fleeing and bring a swarm of zombies along, so he waited from afar at the corner of the staircase.

The dark and narrow corridor, the foul stench gradually seeped into the three’s nostrils, waiting became an essential skill requiring mastery.

After checking the time, five minutes had passed, and Zhang Su hadn’t heard any unsettling noises, only then did he breathe a bit easier, saying softly, “Follow me, the usual rule, make no sound!”

The three slowly moved to the back of the iron door, and as soon as Zhang Su pressed his ear against it, a thud sounded, followed immediately by a hysterical yell.

“Xiaohai, run!”

Zhang Su’s heart suddenly sank, instinctively wanting to lock the door, but his raised hand ultimately recoiled as he turned to urge Zheng Xinyu and Zhong Xiaoshan, “They’ve been discovered, run!”

“Ah?”

Zheng Xinyu was startled, following Zhang Su upstairs in confusion, asking along the way, “Where are we running?”

If given some time, Zheng Xinyu might have made decent plans, but unfortunately, the current environment was fraught with danger. Many times, there wasn’t ample time to think, requiring quick wit or having backup plans B, C, D…

“Out of the unit, head to Building 4, Unit 1!”

Zhang Su dashed upwards, standing behind the unit door and peering through the blood-stained glass outside, unsure whether to feel grateful or frustrated.

A large group of zombies gathered at the base of the burning Unit 2, drastically reducing the pressure on their side. However, if it weren’t for the explosion, they wouldn’t need to be fleeing desperately!

In his ears, the sounds of zombies roaring from below grew closer.

Whew.

Zhang Su stretched his hand and pushed open the unit door, a cold wind blowing against his unwashed hair from the past week.

He couldn’t remember when he last stood by the unit door. Regularly, he’d drive straight into the underground parking and take the elevator home. Roughly estimating, it should’ve been more than half a month ago when he went to the community service point to pick up a package!

A horde of zombies running amok, the foul stench in the air, darkened skies overhead, the ground covered in various garbage, limbs, and puddles of blood, shattered glass, collapsed buildings, charred walls…

If any film crew were to shoot a post-apocalyptic movie, using Sheng Qin Home as a backdrop would save a significant amount on special effects costs!

In that instant, Zhang Su felt his brain absorbing endless information, as though even time had slowed down.

At the same time, someone kicked open the underground door, and the two brothers fled in panic, followed by a long string of zombies!

“Go, Brother Su, aren’t we heading to that building?”

Zheng Xinyu stepped out of the unit door and saw Zhang Su immobilized with a dazed look, quickly pushing him.

Zhang Su snapped back to reality, took big strides, and jumped off the steps, saying, “This is the real deal, stay ready to attack at any moment!”

“Brother Su, there are zombies coming from over there!”

Zheng Xinyu urgently pointed towards the collapsed wall.

On the west side of Building 3 stood the neighborhood wall, which had severely collapsed due to the explosion of shops across the street. The zombies wandering along the road didn’t get attracted by the explosion but became excited as soon as they spotted the trio alive.

The wall’s debris difference wasn’t like the stairs, and the zombies hopped and skipped with little hindrance, swiftly charging into the neighborhood.

Groans…

Seven or eight zombies bellowed wildly, their ghastly white teeth appearing especially sinister, and some even swung their darkened tongues, causing disgusting liquids to splatter everywhere, making one nauseous.

Zhang Su quickly calculated the timing difference and shouted, “Run, don’t mind them!”

As long as they ran normally, the zombies could never catch up. Now wasn’t the time to linger in combat, the numerous nearby zombies meant stopping would lead to more aggression!

Zheng Xinyu and Zhong Xiaoshan were long devoid of any thoughts, but fortunately, their obedience was high. Whatever Zhang Su said, they did, showcasing extreme efficiency, even carrying dozens of pounds while running swiftly.

However, danger lurked not only outside the walls. As the trio reached the gap between the west side of Building 4 and the wall, they suddenly encountered a zombie assault!

Two zombies were probably drawn by the explosion, slowly moving towards the burning area, coincidentally colliding with Zhang Su and the others head-on.

“Damn!”

The terrifying encounter made Zhang Su swear, raising a hammer and swinging sideways at the zombies, with a thud, one got knocked down, its fate uncertain.

But the predicament for the other two was a bit dire.

Zhong Xiaoshan’s reaction wasn’t as quick as Zhang Su’s, and unfortunately, she was directly struck by a zombie, causing her to stagger. Thankfully, Zheng Xinyu caught her, preventing a fall.

Seeing the zombie reaching for her, Zheng Xinyu had no time to swing her stick. Using her agility, she deftly dodged and slipped under the zombie’s armpit.

Zhong Xiaoshan regained her footing, noticing the zombie turned to chase Zheng Xinyu, swinging a large wrench at it, causing the zombie to stagger. Ignoring the outcome, she hastily caught up with the other two.

Though the crisis wasn’t entirely resolved, nearing the front of Building 4, four wandering zombies blocked their path, having already spotted Zhang Su and the others, and began advancing towards them.

“Hit them down and run!”

Zhang Su ran ahead, carrying a pack weighing dozens of pounds, charging into a zombie with full force, like a human missile.

Groans!

The zombie emitted a strange cry, having been a middle school student in life, its skinny body clad in a ragged and filthy school uniform, got flung several meters away, falling to the ground and shaking, unable to rise momentarily!

The human missile Zhang Su achieved complete victory; he merely felt a slight compression in his chest, not much at all.
