Chapter 233 182: Bounty
“They play with explosives, we’ll let them eat bullets!”
Lu Yubo’s heart was filled with killing intent.
Zhang Su’s determination to kill was no weaker than Lu Yubo’s, but as the leader of a twenty-person team, he needed to maintain some composure; some words need not be spoken aloud.
He reached out and patted Lu Yubo’s shoulder, saying, “Our immediate priority is to find out where the people of Beita Camp are hiding!”
At the mention of this issue, everyone in the room fell silent.
With local Wang Xingui’s assistance, several people drove around for several days, almost using up half a tank of gas and covering over a hundred kilometers, yet they still hadn’t discovered any traces of the people from Beita Camp.
There are only two possibilities: either they have moved far away from these villages to settle down elsewhere, or there is someone among them who is naturally skilled at hiding, keeping everyone concealed in a village, not stepping outside, not lighting fires or turning on lights, not making a sound.
Since the opposition could make it to Celestial Horse Island to plant explosives, the possibility of them settling farther away is ruled out!
“A single explosion surely isn’t their ultimate goal; the animosity has already formed, and they definitely know this act can’t wipe us out but will only increase hatred, so they might execute further actions!”
Zhang Su analyzed confidently.
“Big brother is right, those who can make explosives surely know their power; they haven’t thought about directly killing us, seems like they plan to engage us in a prolonged battle?”
Zhao Dezhu also shared his thoughts.
Zhong Xiaoshan nodded and said, “Their aim was just to injure you so we’d fall into self-preservation chaos; the people from Beita Camp have likely set up a fallback plan, those explosives are just one part!”
Everyone looked at each other, this possibility wasn’t impossible, what if there are explosives on the way?
Thinking of this gave everyone the chills.
Zheng Xinyu pointed to Good Fortune who was sitting crouched by her side and said, “Let Good Fortune check out the road situation!”
“Woof!”
Good Fortune nodded and darted out, knowing what she should do.
These days, Good Fortune had been patrolling the forests, especially the areas difficult for those people to traverse, she had been observing, yet she hadn’t expected trouble on the daily routes, it seemed the focus needed to shift.
“Beita Camp is a tumor and must be removed!”
Zhang Su gritted his teeth and then looked at Zhong Xiaoshan, asking, “Will taking out a thousand pounds of stored grain have a big impact on us?”
Everyone was stunned; what does getting rid of Beita Camp have to do with the grain stock?
“The grain you’ve brought back recently is quite ample, the camp’s reserves are sufficient, taking out a thousand pounds of grain will have an impact but can be borne, the remaining grain is enough for two months!”
Zhong Xiaoshan answered honestly, although unsure why Zhang Su was asking about grain.
“I want to send out a bounty, asking both West Camp and United Village to help find the people of Beita Camp. Unless they hide completely, if they show themselves, they’re dead!”
Zhang Su was truly enraged and felt uneasy, like being watched by a poisonous snake, the crisis had to be swiftly eliminated!
After resting at camp for two days, during which Zhang Su had people fill the blown-up road with sand and soil, allowing normal passage, though uneven.
At the same time, he further strengthened the camp’s defenses, but he hadn’t sent anyone out to investigate; even he was wary, so he didn’t feel comfortable sending others out, fearing they wouldn’t gather information and instead might get caught themselves.
What’s needed now is defense, not giving the opponent an opportunity, and once they regain composure, deliver them a Thunderous Strike!
Perhaps the people from Beita Camp were temporarily lying low, perhaps the defense was working, but a few days passed peacefully.
Three days after the explosion, Zhang Su didn’t stay at camp anymore. He took Lu Yubo, Qi Xiaoshuai, and Tan Huajun, and the four of them drove a Mercedes camper carefully onto the road, heading towards United Village.
Corgi Good Fortune had already scouted the route earlier without finding any hazards, but driving out of camp again inevitably made hearts uneasy.
This trip wasn’t for trading; Zhang Su wanted to personally announce the bounty offer.
He couldn’t broadcast a signal via FM radio, as that could attract unwanted attention!
“Wh-what? A thousand pounds of grain to find the Beita Camp villagers’ hideout? Big brother, what’s happening with you?”
Wang Xingui could hardly believe it upon hearing Zhang Su’s words.
A thousand pounds of grain seems not much at first, but if rationed, it’s enough to feed fifty people for more than half a month; even the grain-abundant United Village valued this bounty.
“Don’t worry about it, this is the price, and it can be exchanged for supplies or medicine. As long as the information is accurate, everything is negotiable! Here, the frequency is set, press the talk button to speak directly when there’s news!”
With that, Zhang Su handed Wang Xingui a walkie-talkie; they had plenty of these at the camp, scavenged from a communications shop, able to reach far unless heavily interfered, over ten kilometers at its limit.
“Got it, got it!”
Wang Xingui took the walkie-talkie and nodded repeatedly.
“Alright then, you go for it, I’m heading to West Camp Village!”
Zhang Su, sitting in the car, after delivering the message, turned around and left.
“Brother Guizi, King Yama has a mark on his face, could it be they suffered a loss fighting with Beita Camp?”
As the camper van departed, someone from United Village gathered beside Wang Xingui, whispering.
King Yama was their secret nickname for Zhang Su, primarily because he was terrifying at the time; his nonchalant, ruthless demeanor was still vivid in their memory, earning him this elegant moniker.
Wang Xingui subconsciously touched the injured part of his face caused by Zhang Su, shaking his head, “Not sure, but I feel it’s not that simple. If there was a confrontation, their investigation might lead them to Beita Camp’s hideout…”
“What else could it be then… Could it be that they were backstabbed by Beita Camp?”
Someone looked shocked.
Wang Xingui nodded thoughtfully, “That’s very possible. Otherwise, with King Yama’s equipment, there’s no way they couldn’t beat those fools at Beita Camp. Something’s going to happen, something big at Niuquanzi Town.”
“What do you say then, Brother Guizi, should we help King Yama and the others?” a villager inquired.
“Of course we should help!” Wang Xingui didn’t speak, but a middle-aged man in his fifties next to him chimed in, “The thugs at Beita Camp are like rabid dogs, biting everywhere. We can’t handle them, but we can definitely assist King Yama in their investigation!”
“That’s right, my uncle is absolutely correct!”
Wang Xingui nodded in agreement; the speaker was none other than his own second uncle.
“We should not only help King Yama but do our utmost. Don’t let King Yama’s ruthless demeanor fool you; he’s clear about his likes and dislikes. Have you ever seen him trouble us? He’s a big deal, and if we can latch onto him, life will be much better ahead!”
“Let’s skip the chatter and get moving. Tell everyone to drop what they’re doing, be discreet, and stay safe!”
“Got it.”
“Yes!”
The villagers of United Village mobilized en masse, using electric scooters, motorcycles, minivans, and even bicycles.
Zhang Su had barely left United Village before arriving outside West Camp Village.
From afar, he saw the barricades on the bridge. Compared to when they first came, there were even more barricades now, with nail boards on the ground, offering full protection.
If any vehicle recklessly tries to force its way through, the outcome would be disastrous.
Sitting in the car, Zhang Su took out a professional walkie-talkie, pressed the communication button, and said, “Hello, Xinyu, can you hear me?”
“I hear you, Brother Su, loud and clear!”
A moment later, the walkie-talkie received a reply.
“Brother Su, these military-grade walkie-talkies are indeed impressive; the direct distance from here to Celestial Horse Island must be six or seven kilometers, yet we can still communicate.”
Lu Yubo marveled.
Zhang Su gripped the walkie-talkie and said, “Luezi mentioned the maximum communication range can reach twenty kilometers, but that would be over the sea or plains; around here, about ten kilometers is our limit!”
As he spoke, Zhang Su saw Ma Changshou leading people out of the village, quickly striding forth.
“Boss Zhang, what wind blew you here!”
After the disaster, cars mostly traveled south to north, but rarely from north to south. Knowing about the arrival of the Mercedes camper van, Ma Changshou dropped what he was doing and hurried to the village entrance with his people.
“Old Village Chief, I came to check on you!”
Zhang Su and the others got out of the car.
Ma Changshou saw the few people who got out with their automatic rifles slung over their shoulders, and the leader was wearing a grenade on his waist. His lips trembled slightly, but he greeted them with a full smile.
“This old bag of bones, what business could possibly warrant a visit from Boss Zhang? Or is there something you need from an old man like me?”
The villagers accompanying Ma Changshou didn’t feel embarrassed by their chief’s flattering words; instead, they were somewhat intimidated by Zhang Su and his group’s cold expressions, unsure of what was transpiring.
“Do you know of Beita Camp in Niuquanzi Town?”
Zhang Su wasn’t in the mood for pleasantries, getting straight to the point.
“I know that Niuquanzi Town has Beita Camp, why?”
Ma Changshou looked puzzled.
“Their people have been causing trouble in my area. I’ve been looking for those guys. I went to Beita Camp, but the place was deserted, with dozens of people missing. If you know their whereabouts, please let me know. So long as the info is accurate, there’s a reward of a thousand pounds of grain.”
Speaking, Zhang Su handed the walkie-talkie to Ma Changshou, who accepted it with a face full of surprise, “If you don’t want grain, you can exchange it for other supplies, like medicine, clothing, and so on. No problem!”
“Boss Zhang, you’re not making a minor feud here, are you?”
Ma Changshou hurriedly took the walkie-talkie, his face inquiring. A thousand pounds of grain just for one piece of info—a considerable sum.
“It’s just like that.”
Zhang Su smiled faintly, not elaborating, pointing to the bridge, “How’s business been recently?”
Ma Changshou clearly sensed Zhang Su’s unwillingness to go into detail, so he didn’t press on, clutching the walkie-talkie tightly and sighed, “I heard that Qin City now has a force called the Survivor Alliance, gathering almost half of Qin City’s survivors together. Lately, fewer and fewer people are leaving the city; there’s no business.””
