Chapter 170: Chapter 170 Last chance of escape
Ava’s eyes narrowed. "Are you trying to get your fingers crushed? Move!"
"That’s not going to happen, Ava. I can’t let you do this. Just listen to me. I have a plan."
Ava stared at her. Then she started laughing. It wasn’t a happy laugh. It was the kind of laughter that escaped someone who had been pushed beyond the limits of what they could tolerate. She didn’t know whether she was finally losing her mind or whether grief was slowly destroying whatever patience she had left. But Bonnie was certainly making things worse.
"Just look at yourself, Bonnie." Ava shook her head. "Look at you! You’re standing here looking absolutely pathetic, begging me to trust you when you haven’t even explained what you want."
Bonnie’s lips parted, but Ava continued. "If you truly have a plan, why didn’t you carry it out yourself? Why come looking for me?" Her eyes hardened. "And what happens if I agree? Will you drag me into some pit and tell everyone that I was the one who came up with the idea? Is that how you’re planning to get it done?"
She gave another humorless laugh. "Girl, I’ve seen how these things work. I’ve watched people betray each other just to save their own skins. I’m not falling for a trick like that." Ava shook her head. "And isn’t it funny? You were against my mother and everything she did, but now you want me to participate in something that could get me killed." She looked Bonnie directly in the eyes. "Do you expect me to throw my life away simply because you suddenly decided that escaping is a good idea?"
Bonnie’s shoulders fell.
Ava tightened her grip on the door. "Well, when you’re done, you can make your way out. I don’t want any bullshit from your insecure ass. We all have our own problems, so let me handle mine and you handle yours." She began pulling the door shut again.
Bonnie still refused to move.
Ava’s patience finally snapped. "Seriously, are you always this insufferable?" She glared at Bonnie. "Is it any wonder Luna abandoned you? With this kind of behavior, of course she’d get irritated with you! And damn it, I’m getting irritated too."
Bonnie flinched at the mention of Luna.
Ava continued, her voice rising. "Can’t you get anything into that head of yours? Are you really that stupid?"
The insult landed hard. For a moment, Bonnie looked as though she might lash out. Ava was ready for it. She expected another argument, another accusation, or perhaps Bonnie finally walking away in anger.
Instead, Bonnie lowered her head. "I’m alone, Ava." Her voice was suddenly quiet. "And you’re alone too."
Ava’s expression remained guarded.
Bonnie wiped her tears with the back of her hand. "Believe it or not, we can’t survive everything happening in this world by ourselves anymore. Not now. We need someone we can trust, someone who can help us when things go wrong." She looked up again. "You need a partner, and so do I."
Ava didn’t answer.
"So let me be with you" Bonnie continued. "We can escape together. I have a plan, Ava. A real one. I know things about what’s happening here, things I’ve figured out, and I can explain everything to you." Her fingers tightened around the edge of the door. "All I need is someone willing to follow me. Someone who won’t abandon the plan halfway through."
Bonnie’s voice trembled. "Can’t you do that? Can’t you at least try to save yourself?" She paused. "Escape, Ava. Do what your parents couldn’t do."
The moment those words left Bonnie’s mouth, Ava’s legs gave way. She fell to the floor. Her hands covered her face as a sob escaped her throat.
"I can’t..." Her voice was barely audible.
Bonnie immediately crouched in front of her.
Ava shook her head, tears spilling between her fingers. "I’m not strong enough to do this without my mother."
The words broke something inside her. She had spent the entire day trying to hold herself together. She had endured people’s whispers, their accusations, and their cruel comments without allowing herself to collapse. She had even managed to defend herself when they insulted her family. But now that she was finally inside her apartment, with someone standing before her who seemed to understand at least a little of what she was going through, she couldn’t hold it in anymore.
Her mother was gone. Her brother was gone. And she didn’t know how to move forward without them.
Bonnie hesitated. She had expected Ava to argue with her, perhaps even throw her out. She hadn’t expected this. For a moment, she simply stared at the woman crying on the floor, unsure of what to say.
Then she moved closer and wrapped her arms around Ava.
Ava didn’t resist. She cried harder, clutching Bonnie as though she were desperately trying to hold on to the last remaining piece of her collapsing world.
Bonnie held her tightly. She didn’t have the right words to comfort her. Nothing she could say would bring Madison or Thomas back. Nothing would erase the humiliation, the accusations, or the pain Ava had endured.
But she understood one thing. Ava couldn’t remain here. Not anymore.
Because while Ava was grieving the family she had lost, Chris Walton was becoming more powerful by the day. And after what had happened in the bathroom, Bonnie knew that his attention toward her was no longer harmless. Chris had already crossed a line once. He had cornered her, grabbed her, and threatened her when she refused to give him what he wanted. She couldn’t allow it to happen again. And she couldn’t let Ava become his next target.
Bonnie held her a little tighter. They had to leave. Whatever awaited them outside the safe zone, they would have to face it together.
Because if they stayed, they might not get another chance to escape.
