Apocalypse Online: I Awaken the Ultimate Bloodline
Chapter 157: The Shifting Core
Chapter 157: The Shifting Core
Amidst the chaos in the sky, a thin pocket of calm remained on the ground below.
A familiar figure stepped out from the dust of a collapsed mountain ridge.
Lothe.
His black hair whipped in the turbulent wind, his purple robes torn and streaked with ash. He gripped the Void Spear lightly at his side, his sharp eyes sweeping across the crowded trenches until they locked onto a familiar silhouette.
Seana.
She was directing soldiers toward safe cover, the Blood Moon Sword held low in her right hand. Crimson Blood Qi hummed along the edge of the steel, parrying chunks of falling stone.
The moment she spotted him, her eyes went wide.
"Lothe!"
She didn’t hesitate. Closing the distance in three swift strides, she grabbed the front of his collar, pulled him down, and pressed her lips firmly against his.
Lothe blinked, genuinely surprised for a split second. Then a familiar, easy smile touched his face. He wrapped his free arm around her waist, pulling her close as he kissed her back.
When they finally separated, Seana kept both hands flat against his chest, searching every inch of his face.
"Are you hurt?"
Lothe looked down at himself, his eyes crinkling. "Would I be standing here looking this handsome if I were?"
Seana’s expression went completely flat. "You really can’t behave normally for five minutes, can you?"
"Not when my girlfriend looks at me like that."
She rolled her eyes, but the hard tension in her shoulders finally eased.
Lothe leaned in and stole another quick kiss.
Seana shoved his jaw away. "Enough."
"You started it."
"And you won’t quit."
"Should I apologize?"
"No."
"Then I’m continuing."
"Lothe!"
He laughed softly, the heavy air between them momentarily clearing. For a brief second, the collapsing world felt miles away.
Then the laughter faded.
Lothe looked up at the sky through the reinforced barrier. A massive crimson-black formation was turning above them, choking the clouds with rotating eyes and pulsing veins of energy.
Purple light flickered across his dark eyes.
[QI SIGHT]
The world stripped down to pure structure.
To ordinary eyes, the heavens were covered by a terrifying array of blood-red fire and demonic glyphs.
To Lothe, it was a complex web of runic geometry.
Energy conduits ran across the clouds like tangled roots, linking the thousands of crimson eyes to a hidden hub. Every falling sphere followed a strict trajectory, channeling destructive power through predetermined channels.
Beneath the surface, something far more sinister was happening.
Lothe’s expression hardened.
Seana caught the change immediately. "What is it?"
"The formation is adapting," Lothe said, his voice dropping low.
"Adapting?"
"The way it balances its load. The way it times its attacks." His purple-tinted gaze followed the glowing leylines. "It’s learning from everyone fighting it. It’s analyzing Justin’s lightning, Nyren’s frost, and the Blackwood sword intent. With every wave we block, it recalibrates the next strike to bypass those exact defenses."
He looked toward the golden-white barrier overhead, noting how the fractures were taking longer to mend.
"The barrier is bleeding out. Every volley is thirty percent more effective than the last."
Seana gripped his collar tighter.
"What are you going to do?"
Lothe looked at her. "Find the core."
"And then?"
"Smash it."
She stared at him in disbelief. "You say that like you’re going out to buy bread from a street vendor."
"Would you prefer I start crying?"
"I’d prefer you stop pretending saving the country is a walk in the park!"
Lothe smiled softly, his hand reaching up to brush a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "I’m serious, my love."
His tone softened, carrying quiet weight.
"I need Professor Sy. He understands the theoretical framework of these ancient arrays better than anyone, and through my Qi Sight, I found a blind path through the outer wards."
Seana’s hand dropped toward the hilt of her sword. "Then I’m coming with you."
"No."
Her head snapped up. "What?"
"You stay here."
"Lothe—"
"Seana."
His voice wasn’t harsh, but the absolute certainty in it made her stop. He looked toward the thousands of wounded soldiers, conscripts, and civilians huddled beneath the straining shield.
"If something goes wrong while Sy and I are tearing into the core, the sky is going to fall fast," Lothe said. "The Family Heads with Asher and Adrain qare pinned holding the ceiling. If the perimeter breaks down here, there’s nobody left with the fangs to keep these people alive."
"And you think I’m the only one who can do that?"
"No," Lothe said, meeting her eyes. "But you’re the only one I trust to do it."
She went quiet.
Lothe took her hand, pressing a brief kiss against her knuckles. "Besides, I can’t concentrate on dismantling an ancient world-ending weapon if I’m constantly looking over my shoulder to make sure you’re okay."
Seana looked at him, exasperated. "And you expect me not to worry about you?"
"Of course not. That would be unreasonable." He grinned. "Just stay alive down here so you can yell at me when it’s over."
For a moment, she said nothing. Then she pulled him down for one last kiss—short, fierce, and desperate.
"Come back," she whispered against his lips.
Lothe rested his forehead against hers. "I will."
He stepped back. Deep purple spatial Qi gathered around his boots.
[VOID STEP — FIRST FORM: SPATIAL ANCHOR!]
SHING!
Space folded beneath his heel. An invisible platform of condensed spatial force solidified four feet in the air.
As Lothe began his climb, General Vaelric Ashford approached, stepping through the rubble to Seana’s side.
"He’s going up there," Vaelric noted, watching the purple ripples in the air.
"Yes," Seana answered, her eyes never leaving Lothe’s back.
"Shouldn’t you follow him?" Vaelric asked, his tone measured. "They need every ounce of firepower up there, and I’ve seen what your blade can do."
"I am needed right here," Seana replied calmly, turning her cold gaze toward the general. "Trust me."
Vaelric held her gaze for a second, then nodded slowly. Ever since the battle at the academy, he hadn’t been able to fully measure either of these two youths. They operated on an entirely different plane of logic.
High above them, Lothe climbed.
SHING! SHING! SHING!
He wasn’t flying like the Core Formation cultivators. He was walking up an invisible staircase made of fractured space.
Each step carried him dozens of meters higher, vanishing and reappearing between spatial nodes until he cleared the golden barrier and reached the cloud line.
Before stepping into the heavy smog, he glanced down once.
Seana was still standing there, watching him.
He offered a faint smile, then turned and vanished into the storm.
Seana tightened her grip on the Blood Moon Sword, turning her back to the survivors.
"Don’t you dare break that promise, idiot." She murmured.
——————————
High above the battlefield, a flash of purple light broke through the smog.
SHING!
Lothe materialized on a floating platform of stone beside Professor Sy and Lucan.
Professor Sy turned, adjusting his cracked glasses. "You’re late."
"Traffic was awful," Lothe replied smoothly.
"At this point, I would welcome anyone capable of explaining why an ancient array is raining enough fire on us to vaporize a province," Sy sighed.
Lothe looked up at the churning crimson canopy. "Then consider it your lucky day."
Sy’s sharp eyes narrowed. "You found the structure?"
"I found the layout."
Lothe raised his right hand. A thin, needle-like beam of purple spatial Qi lanced from his index finger, piercing through the smoke to touch one of the giant, weeping crimson eyes.
"Look closely," Lothe said. "Those eyes aren’t the core. They’re offensive vents. Each one is a localized discharge node."
Professor Sy followed the purple trace. "That explains why Oren’s counter-strike didn’t halt the fire. Destroying a node simply dumps the load onto the neighboring vents."
"Exactly. The formation auto-balances. Kill one, and the other nine hundred pick up the slack."
Lothe swept his finger across the sky, drawing four more distinct purple lines that mapped out the layers of the formation like an architectural blueprint.
"Layer one: the outer offensive vents. Layer two: the defensive dispersion matrix that shrugs off direct attacks. Layer three: the internal circulation network pumping energy from the subterranean leylines."
Professor Sy studied the glowing diagram, his expression turning grim. "And the core?"
Lothe pointed directly toward the vortex at the heart of the storm.
"It’s buried underneath all three."
For a fraction of a second, a dark, circular silhouette surfaced between the churning crimson runes, only to sink back into the dark like a predatory fish beneath muddy water.
Sy caught it. "I saw that. It moved."
"It doesn’t move through physical space," Lothe corrected him. "The circulation network constantly shifts the runic pathways that define its coordinate. The core stays in one spot, but the formation bends the surrounding space to make it look like it’s drifting."
Sy’s brow furrowed deep. "Spatial cloaking tied to dynamic energy routing?"
"Precisely. It masks its exact location behind its own energy spikes. If you fire a direct attack at where it looks like it is, the outer layers will catch the blow and channel the energy right back into the offensive vents."
Professor Sy folded his arms, his mind working through the equations at frightening speed. "Then the solution is textbook. We sever the circulation network first, starve the outer layers, and expose the core."
Lothe shook his head, a faint, dangerous smirk playing on his lips.
"Not quite."
