Chapter 447: Chapter 223: The Situation in the Northern Lands, Feint and Pin Down, I’ll Be the Main Force

At 10:30 PM, Lin Feng and his group followed an escorting soldier from the apartment entrance to the war room inside the air force base.

Inside, not only was General Chen, who had been waiting for some time, but also several officer-rank Tier Two Awakeners. However, after sensing the power of Lin Feng’s group, they all sat ramrod straight.

After all, among their group of over thirty, aside from the ten War Corps Commanders who were only at Tier One Late Stage Perfection, the remaining twenty-plus people were all at the Tier Two Late Stage.

Especially for the few led by City Lord Lin, ordinary Tier Two Early Stage Awakened could not sense their level of power at all.

When the gap in power between two sides exceeded three times or more, if the stronger party didn’t intentionally release their aura, the weaker party couldn’t even get an accurate sense of their strength.

But it was clear General Chen had already reminded these newly-promoted Tier Two Commanders to remain sufficiently humble and discreet in the presence of the Salvation Army.

Ostensibly, the two sides were engaged in a cooperative support mission, but in reality, the Federation had been forced to plead for the Salvation Army’s help.

That was why even for this briefing, General Chen had to come and notify them in person.

As Lin Feng and the others took their seats in the back of the vast war room, guards on either side dimmed the lights.

In the dim light, a staff officer switched on a projector, casting a high-definition map of the entire Federal Capital onto a screen.

It clearly marked the positions of all the High-tier Mother Empresses in the North, along with the size of the Swarms under their command, their distribution ranges, and more.

’Looks like even though the Federation’s high command is powerless to break the stalemate, their intelligence gathering is still pretty strong.’

They lacked power, but their operational framework was still intact, allowing them to handle a war of this million-strong scale.

And as long as the intelligence was accurate, Lin Feng was confident he could lead his Tier Two Battle Group to quickly eliminate the isolated Tier Three Early-stage Mother Empresses.

This way, he could complete the mission assigned by the military and also use the opportunity to increase their strength—killing two birds with one stone.

As the staff officer’s briefing gradually clarified the current situation of the battle to defend the Capital, Lin Feng began to exchange quiet words with Ling Yi, Shen Jie, and Liu Yi beside him.

Now, regardless of whether the Federation’s high command was willing to admit it...

The reality was that the defense plan had utterly failed.

It wasn’t that the Capital City’s defending forces had been wiped out. Rather, after the Zerg Race completed their encirclement, blockading all land and air routes, the cost for the Federation to provide logistical support to the Capital was continually soaring.

To supply the city’s soldiers and civilians, the air force had already lost over half its transport planes, and any attempts to smuggle supplies by land were detected and intercepted by the omnipresent Zerg Race.

Such heavy losses and consumption led to widespread discontent in the safe zones behind the front lines.

Resources that should have been used to rescue large numbers of refugees were being wasted on this battle for the Capital, a fight that was far more symbolic than practical.

However, seething public resentment wasn’t the fundamental reason the various factions dared to voice their opposition.

The main issue was the front line’s endless demands, while the bases in the rear received none of the promised returns.

For instance, there was no glimmer of victory in the battle for the Capital, nor were there any of the live Zerg spoils promised from the front.

Therefore, realizing victory was impossible, the various factions had to jump from the sinking ship that was the Federation, lest they sacrifice all their remaining potential in this doomed defense.

Just then, victorious reports arrived from the South. The establishment of the Jin City Base and the Salvation Army offered the major powers in the rear another path.

Namely, to form their own Awakener teams and return to fight on the coastal front lines.

From then on, they would no longer rely on the Federation, but forge their own independent paths.

And with the war in the North taking one bad turn after another, the only option left for the Federation’s high command, now that their defense strategy had failed, was to minimize their losses...

...by rescuing the over one million survivors and hundreds of thousands of soldiers besieged by the Zerg Race as quickly as possible.

The more people they saved, the more secure the Federation’s status and influence would be in this post-apocalyptic era.

This was especially true for the hundreds of thousands of trapped soldiers, the vast majority of whom had become Awakeners and Genetic Warriors. Only by rescuing this invaluable force could the Federation avoid existing in name only.

This was why the high command was willing, at any cost, to request support and cooperation from the Salvation Army in the South, to ensure the successful execution of this breakout and rescue plan.

The breakout plan currently projected on the screen had actually been finalized a week ago.

The only weak point in the deployment was that the force responsible for the feint attack in the Southwest—the one meant to pin down the enemy—had to possess the strength to tie up three Mother Empresses.

Only the Salvation Army, led by Lin Feng, was capable of such a task.

As the staff officer began to explain the Salvation Army’s role, Lin Feng and the others got a general understanding of their mission objectives and requirements:

According to observations and statistics from frontline soldiers and the defenders inside the Capital, the current distribution of Mother Empresses surrounding the city consists of roughly four Tier Three Middle Stage Mother Empresses stationed at the four cardinal points: north, south, east, and west.

As the main force besieging the Capital, these Mid-stage Mother Empresses have already led their Swarms to the front lines, continuously harassing the city’s defenders over the past half-month.

They were pressing ever closer, slowly devouring the human survivors.

Meanwhile, in an outer ring, positioned at the four remote intermediate directions—northeast, Northwest, southeast, and Southwest—anywhere from two to three Tier Three Early-stage Mother Empresses were stationed with their forces.

Their purpose was to intercept any coordinated breakout attempt from the city’s defenders.

This was because to the Northwest of the Federal Capital lay a plateau of hills and ravines over a thousand meters above sea level. Not only was the soil there hard, dry, and lacking water, but the environment was also exceptionally barren.
