Chapter 289: Chapter 289: The White Family’s Dog

Every name was imprinted in his mind, and their positions and family affiliations immediately came to him.

He wrote each name down on a piece of paper. After reviewing the list from top to bottom, he took a photo and sent it to Lily Hart and the three others before burning the paper.

After Lily Hart received the message, she looked over the list. She didn’t recognize most of the names, but after some thought, she decided to create a small group chat.

The group had only five members: Lily Hart, Quincy Shaw, Logan Holland, Yael Lowell, and Peter Sharp.

All of them were trustworthy.

She changed the group name to: The Mysterious Clan is dogshit.

Simple and to the point.

Logan Holland exploded with laughter in the chat, spamming dozens of "hahaha"s in a row. Lily felt like the text was so loud it was hurting her eyes, even from behind the screen.

Yael Lowell said, "Some of these people hold pretty high-ranking positions. What’s our plan?"

Peter Sharp added, "He’s right. If we suddenly do a massive reshuffle, I’m afraid it’ll throw Central Command into chaos."

"Then we’ll replace them slowly," Lily Hart suggested. "After all these years, you must have subordinates you trust, right? Promote them!"

Logan Holland was the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yael Lowell was the Minister of Logistics, and Peter Sharp was the Minister of Communications.

For instance, every base has a signal tower to ensure smooth communication between them.

Lily Hart had a point. They had always had trustworthy and competent subordinates; there just had never been a clear path for them to get promoted.

Once they thought of it that way, the problem suddenly seemed easy to solve.

The five of them, full of ambition, started hyping each other up on their Light Brains.

Frost Shaw had been planning to head back to the convenience store, but she saw the smile on Boss Hart’s face and couldn’t help but feel curious.

’What’s on her Light Brain? Is it that interesting? She’s so absorbed.’

’Or... who is she chatting with?’ Frost Shaw’s mind started to race.

But she didn’t dare ask. She could only watch from a distance before reluctantly leaving.

’Boss Hart doesn’t like people prying into her business. It makes her feel controlled.’

’If she wants to talk about it, she will,’ Frost Shaw thought.

The rain continued all night. It had now been raining for three straight days without a single break.

Lily Hart suspected it was as if a whole year’s worth of rain was falling at once.

While she was having breakfast, Elder Shaw was already making his move at Central Command. He started with the members in low-ranking but critical departments.

Elder Shaw had no intention of taking things slowly. He planned to act decisively and wasn’t afraid of the potential chaos.

’In fact,’ he thought, ’chaos might even be better. It would allow capable and ambitious people to rise through the ranks quickly.’

’It was better than the current situation, where those with talent were suppressed while others hogged all the key positions.’

Just as Elder Shaw was speaking with the eleventh one of these "minions," Chad Yates stormed in with his men.

Elder Shaw was sitting behind his desk, with the man seated in front of it. Both of them were smiling.

An uninformed observer might have thought they were sharing a joke.

Chad Yates took a closer look and recognized the man as someone from the White Family, a plant in the Logistics Department.

Elder Shaw looked up and took a sip of his hot tea. "Manager Yates, did you not see the door?"

Chad Yates’s expression stiffened. He ignored the question and cut straight to the point. "What are you two doing?"

"We’re chatting. Can’t you see, Manager Yates? So young, and yet your eyes are already failing you," Elder Shaw sighed with mock pity.

"What were you talking about?" Chad Yates strode over, hauled the man to his feet, and demanded.

"I..." The man stammered, not daring to speak, a flicker of hesitation in his eyes.

Chad Yates’s voice was sharp. "Speak!"

He had just received word that Elder Shaw had lost his mind and was summoning the Mysterious Clan’s various pawns from across the base for "talks."

Fearing some new trouble was brewing, he had rushed over with his men. Just as he’d expected!

’These two were definitely up to no good!’

The man said in a low voice, "E-Elder Shaw... was asking about my career plan."

Chad Yates’s pupils quaked. He turned on Quincy Shaw. "What are you playing at?"

Elder Shaw shrugged and leaned back in his chair. He leisurely blew on his tea, the steam blurring his features.

He said with an air of bewilderment, "Manager Yates, don’t be so jumpy. I’m an old man. I can’t handle such frights."

"Besides, what’s so sinister about chatting with a confused young man about his career plan and his views on the future? *That* is my intention."

Chad Yates had never been able to win an argument against him and couldn’t be bothered to waste his breath. He grabbed the man from Logistics and stormed out.

"Chad Yates, do you really want to be the White Family’s dog forever?" Quincy Shaw’s words landed with the weight of a curse.

Chad Yates’s steps faltered. A flicker of conflict crossed his face, but it was gone in an instant. He quickly composed himself and continued striding out.

Elder Shaw watched him go, then took another sip of his hot tea. An assistant stepped forward. "Do we continue the operation?"

"Continue," said Elder Shaw.

’Of course, we’re continuing. I want to be this blatant. I’ll use the cover of the storm, when travel is difficult, to get everyone’s attention.’

Afterward, Elder Shaw continued summoning people for talks. Meanwhile, the four Managers held a small meeting of their own to complain about him.

"That old geezer is just trying to sow discord!" Chad Yates fumed.

Brian Booker gave a lazy yawn. "I suspect he’s trying to sway them and pull them over to his side."

"So what’s the plan?" Steven Gibbs asked.

"What about the ones he’s already spoken to... are they still usable?" Lena Corbin fretted.

We have no idea what they talked about or what the outcome was. What if they’ve been turned? Become double agents? What then?

In their minds, anyone who had been summoned was now crossed off the list, no matter the outcome.

They thought the warning would make Elder Shaw back down, but it didn’t. In fact, he became even more brazen. If this kept up, they really would be left with no one to command.

The Managers relayed the matter to the Mysterious Clan. They responded with disdain, asking, "Why not just kill the old man?"

It was a good idea, certainly, but how could it be done? He was protected at all times by High-level Superpower Users, the strongest combat force in the entire army.

An assassination was simply impossible.

But then, the Mysterious Clan provided another piece of information. Their eyes lit up, and they instantly agreed on a plan.

It wasn’t just Elder Shaw taking action. Logan Holland and the other two were also working hard, lobbying ambitious and trusted subordinates. They told them to stay on high alert, as a promotion was very likely on the horizon.

Everything seemed to be proceeding in an orderly fashion.

Lily Hart kept painting them a grand picture of a perfect Central Command—one with abundant resources, thriving and prosperous.

It left the four men so motivated they wished they could realize this vision by the very next day.

But the reality was that they still had a long and arduous road ahead of them.

While they were hard at work, the Managers weren’t idle either. They were intensely discussing how to carry out their own plan.

As noon approached, the rain finally stopped. The sun peeked out from behind the thick clouds, generously bestowing its light upon the land. Watching it, Lily Hart’s mood brightened.

’The rain always stops eventually, and the sun is sure to come out. Hope is just ahead.’

Logan Holland gazed out the window at the gentle sun, which wasn’t harsh on the eyes. It was as if he could truly see hope, and the beautiful future Lily Hart had painted for them involuntarily appeared before his eyes.
