The quiet inside the Command Hub was profound, broken only by the soft, rhythmic hum of the main diagnostic servers and the low, mechanical whir of the cooling fans mounted inside the concrete walls.

Following the intense, bloody battle against Third Mechanized Vanguard and the lingering threat of the high-altitude bomber, the Research Center had finally settled into a well-deserved lull. Sun Hao, Dr. Zhou, and the remaining base guards and soldiers had been ordered by Han Zheng to take a mandatory rest period.

After hours of high-voltage signal tracking, manual turret operation, and high-stress defensive maneuvers along the perimeter walls, their eyes were red-rimmed with sheer physical exhaustion, and their bodies badly needed sleep.

Lin Qing was the only person remaining awake inside the Command Hub.

Sitting in Sun Hao’s desk chair before the sprawling array of glowing monitors, she calmly oversaw the automated perimeter sensor sweeps, cycling through camera feeds and adjusting long-range telemetry frequencies.

Her slender fingers moved over the touch panels with practiced, steady efficiency, taking over Sun Hao’s monitor duties so the exhausted soldier could rest without leaving the bunker’s outer defenses unmonitored.

The ambient amber light of the main console reflected softly in her clear, thoughtful eyes. As the routine status checks ran automatically across the glass screens, displaying clear green indicators along every sector line, Lin Qing’s mind drifted back to the quiet moments right after breakfast earlier that morning.

Gu An had approached her in the residential corridor just as the morning dishes were being cleared away. The young girl, who had once been so timid, quiet, and terrified of her own shadow when they first rescued her, had stood tall before her, looking up into her eyes with clear, unwavering determination.

"Sister Lin Qing, I’m growing stronger every single day," she had declared softly, clutching her small fists tightly at her sides as if proving her resolve. "I promise I will help you protect the Research Center next time the enemies comes back. I won’t just hide in the room with the younger kids anymore."

Even little Su Xiao had stepped forward right behind her, her small face serious and devoid of fear as she promised to help as well.

Thinking back on their earnest, resolute little expressions, a gentle yet bittersweet smile touched Lin Qing’s lips in the quiet room.

Between the relentless waves of mutated infected hordes, harsh post-apocalyptic winter freezes, and constant, violent military sieges launched by Apex, the children had matured at a terrifying pace. It was the outcome she had wanted as it would help them survive this world.

They were sensible, observant, and fiercely brave, but it still pained her heart to realize that this brutal, ruined world had forced them to grow up far too fast, stripping away the careless innocence that childhood was supposed to hold.

Lin Qing leaned back against the high headrest of the chair, her gaze drifting upward toward the ceiling. A deep, quiet question weighed heavily on her mind: Will we ever truly succeed in creating a genuine, safe haven for everyone here?

It felt as though they were locked in an endless, exhausting cycle of survival against impossible odds. One massive obstacle was cleared only to reveal a larger, far more dangerous threat looming right on the horizon.

Mutated zombies, cutthroat raider bands, rogue survivor factions, and now the vast, terrifying Apex Organization—both infected monsters and ruthless humans seemed to come looking for trouble without giving them a single moment of break.

A quiet, tired sigh escaped her lips as she adjusted her posture in the chair. Back in her past life, before she had transmigrated into this apocalyptic world, she had only read a portion of the original webnovel.

She knew the general character arcs, major faction names, and overarching world mechanics, but she had never finished reading the full book down to its conclusion and the world of the book took place a bit in the future as well.

Sitting alone in the quiet command center, a passing thought crossed her mind—she wished with all her heart that she had read the entire story down to the final Chapter.

She couldn’t help but wonder if Su Yun had read the entire novel before coming here. ’Maybe Su Yun knows something I don’t’, Lin Qing thought. ’Maybe together we can piece the hidden plot points and hidden secrets together, and finally figure out a way to break this endless, suffocating siege once and for all.’

Lost in her thoughts about the past and the uncertain, dangerous present, Lin Qing watched the green radar sweeps pulse hypnotically across the primary glass screen, mapping the empty, mountains outside.

BEEP... BEEP... BEEP!

A sharp, high-frequency signal tone suddenly shattered the quiet silence of the Command Hub.

Lin Qing’s eyes snapped sharp, her mind instantly snapping out of her reverie. She leaned forward in the chair, her fingers flying across the console to isolate and lock onto the incoming data packet. A flashing yellow indicator was pulsing wildly on the regional communications terminal—a direct, heavily encrypted long-range distress pulse routing through a scrambled emergency channel.

Lin Qing quickly executed a decryption protocol, bringing the raw text feed straight onto the central display monitor.

The message was brief, frantic, and cut off abruptly near the end as if sent under heavy fire, but the sender ID code was completely unmistakable: Ye Lin.

"Lin Qing, Han Zheng—if you receive this transmission, I need immediate assistance. I managed to locate my mother and extract her from the holding facility, but Apex security units caught us red-handed during the getaway. Heavy pursuit squads are on our tail right now, closing in fast. I have secured vital, high-level intelligence on Apex’s internal core structure, troop rotations, and regional vulnerabilities. Send help if you can. Transmitting emergency meeting coordinates now."

Attached directly to the bottom of the line was a set of precise geographical coordinates—a rocky, densely forested ravine situated fifteen miles southwest of the mountain pass.

Lin Qing stood up from the chair immediately, her calm expression completely dissolving into a hard, decisive mask. She reached out and hit the master emergency summon chime on the main console panel.

A low, resonant chime echoed through the residential quarters and lower staging bays, waking the rested squad members and instantly alerting everyone.

Within five minutes, the doors of the Command Hub slid open, and the entire core team gathered around the map table.

Han Zheng stepped inside first, his frame radiating steady, formidable strength, followed closely by everyone.

"What’s the situation, Lin Qing?" Han Zheng asked, his deep voice cutting through the hum of the servers as he stepped up to the edge of the tactical table.

"An encrypted long-range transmission just came through on our emergency channel," Lin Qing explained crisply, tapping the interface to project Ye Lin’s message directly for everyone to read. "It’s from Ye Lin. He successfully found his mother and broke her out, but Apex discovered the breach and is hunting them down across the regional sector right now."

Lu Feng leaned over, reading the short text. "He claims he managed to secure critical intelligence regarding Apex’s internal core structure and operational weaknesses."

"Ye Lin doesn’t seem like someone who would make empty claims or panic without reason," Old Wang remarked, crossing his arms over his chest as he stared at the flashing coordinates. "If he says he secured critical data while breaking his mother out, then he might hold the exact key we’ve been looking for. We just talked about taking the fight directly to Apex—this might be our best entry point."

"We were looking for a concrete way to break their grip and find their strategic blind spots," Han Zheng said, his eyes fixed on the transmitted coordinates flickering on the map. "Ye Lin just gave us our answer. If Apex captures him now, that intelligence dies with him."

Han Zheng slammed his fist onto the edge of the table, making an instant, unquestionable command decision. "We go rescue him."

"Wait a moment, Commander," Dr. Zhou spoke up, stepping forward from the side equipment alcove.

"If you’re going out into the field to engage with heavy pursuit squads, take the power core rifles with you," Dr. Zhou said.

Sun Hao stepped up beside Dr. Zhou, nodding in agreement. "The energy core rifles fire concentrated, high-frequency energy bolts driven directly by core power. They can punch straight through high-grade Apex energy shields and heavy armored vehicle plates like they were thin paper. We’ve managed to collect quite a lot power cores"

"Exceptional work, Dr. Zhou," Han Zheng said, his eyes flashing with fierce, dangerous light as he took the rifle Dr Zhou just handed him and racked the weapon’s charge lever with a crisp, echoing click-clack.

He turned toward Lin Qing, Lu Feng, and Ah Hua, his deep voice booming through the Command Hub with absolute authority. "Prep the heavy armored transport and load the new energy rifles. We move out to those rendezvous coordinates immediately!"
