The pre-dawn light over the valley was cold, sharp, and pale, casting long, translucent blue shadows across the staging court of the Research Center. The biting mountain air carried the crisp scent of pine and frozen granite, whispering through the high valley before settling over the reinforced bunker.

At the main blast gate, a massive, heavy-duty convoy was idling in tight tactical formation. Four heavy armored personnel carriers and two multi-axle supply transport trucks sat bumper-to-bumper, their heavy diesel engines emitting a steady, low-frequency rumble that vibrated through the asphalt. Thick, white plumes of exhaust rose steadily, quickly dispersing into the clear morning air.

This was no ordinary scavenging run. Given the rising threat of high-tier mutated variants emerging across the thawing region, Lieutenant Chen commanded a heavily reinforced supply detail composed almost entirely of powered squad members.

Standing near the lead vehicle, Ah Hua adjusted the mounting strap on his heavy machine gun, his frame further bolstered by his passive physical enhancement. Beside him, Xiao Li stood with his arms crossed over his broad chest, his skin already showing the dull, stone-hard sheen of his mineral armor, while Marcus methodically checked the side seals and pressure valves of his tactical suit.

"Every four days, without exception," Lieutenant Chen addressed the assembled team, his sharp, authoritative voice cutting through the hum of the idling engines and the cold wind. "The crops in are growing nicely under the sun-lamps, but a fortress runs on deep, unyielding reserves. We hit the distribution hub thirty miles south, load any dry rations, medical crates, and industrial canned goods we can find, and pull back before dark. Having more food in storage will always be our top priority. We leave nothing to chance."

High above the staging bay, inside the central command hub, Sun Hao sat before a massive wall of glowing monitors. The ambient blue light of the screens illuminated his focused expression as his fingers flew across his keyboard, pulling up high-resolution satellite feeds and thermal radar grids that swept across the convoy’s planned transit route. Next to him, Zhao Lei adjusted the long-range comms array, locking their signal onto a secure, encrypted frequency to ensure untraceable transmission.

"Convoy Lead, this is Central Command," Sun Hao’s voice echoed clearly through Lieutenant Chen’s earpiece. "Satellite link is locked and telemetry is stable. Thermal imaging shows a clean corridor along Highway 4. If any high-density heat signatures drop into your path, I’ll give you a two-mile early warning. One person will remain on CCTV surveillance here at all times, covering every inch of the perimeter."

"Received, Sun Hao," Lieutenant Chen replied, tapping his earpiece once before turning to signal his waiting team. "Mount up!"

The heavy blast gates lifted with a loud, grinding mechanical whine, steam venting from the hydraulic lifts as the reinforced doors cleared the frame. The massive convoy roared out onto the frozen mountain road, their heavy treaded tires kicking up slush as they vanished into the pine-covered valley under the watchful, continuous eye of the base’s orbital monitoring system.

With the heavy supply run deployed and continuously monitored from above, the interior of the Research Center remained in a state of tight, disciplined order.

Down in the weapons bay, Dr. Zhou and Lin Qing worked side-by-side at a workbench illuminated by bright overhead LED strips. The two focused entirely on energy-weapon prototyping using the stored crimson cores.

A high-caliber kinetic sniper rifle lay disassembled between them on an anti-static rubber mat. Dr. Zhou carefully used insulated fine-tip tools to align a small, regulated crimson energy stone into a custom-machined receiver housing, connecting it directly to the firing pin assembly and primary power conduit.

Lin Qing leaned over the assembly, her eyes inspecting the conduit alignment with practiced precision. She adjusted the mechanical dampener near the chamber, her fine motor control ensuring the fragile wiring wouldn’t snap under heavy kinetic recoil.

"If the crimson stone channels energy directly into the round upon chambering," Lin Qing analyzed calmly, her gloved fingers tracing the delicate power bypass, "the thermal output will superheat the kinetic bullet instantly. When the round impacts a target, it won’t just rely on lead penetration—it will detonate with a high-heat thermal burst."

Dr. Zhou adjusted her glasses, locking the outer housing in place with a satisfying, metallic click. "Precisely. Non-powered soldiers like Old Wang or the Depot guards won’t need awakening abilities to pierce mutated bone armor anymore. The crimson stone will do the heavy work for them."

Lin Qing picked up the modified rifle, cycling the bolt with a sharp, fluid motion. The crimson core inside the receiver pulsed with a low, steady red light, signaling a full, stabilized weapon charge. "Let’s assemble five more prototypes for field testing."

While the lab detail focused on offense, Han Zheng was systematically securing the fortress from the inside out.

Unrolling the complete structural layout of the Research Center on a table in the upper lobby, Han Zheng carefully analyzed every potential entry vector—from secondary drainage channels to old ventilation shafts buried deep beneath the mountain rock.

Song Yan walked up beside him, his expression serious as he studied the complex blueprints. "The main blast gate is solid, but if a high-tier horde surges down the mountain, the structural pressure against the outer courtyard walls could be a vulnerability."

"We fortify every inch," Han Zheng said coldly, marking several weak points with a red stylus. "We don’t leave a single blind spot."

Moving out to the outer perimeter, Han Zheng leveraged Song Yan’s specialized gravity manipulation. Song Yan raised his hands, his energy flaring as multi-ton steel beams and reinforced concrete slabs lifted into the air as if weightless. Han Zheng and the recently formed engineering detail guided them into place along the outer choke points, creating thick, layered kill boxes and secondary blast barricades.

Along the outer treeline, Han Zheng supervised the placement of landmine networks and acoustic distraction arrays. Any hostiles attempting to climb the mountain ridge would trigger explosive shockwaves long before reaching the main walls.

Inside the bunker, the daily routine ran like clockwork. Song Yan had selected and organized vetted Depot civilians into strict, fair shift rotations. Groups were assigned to indoor crop care, kitchen duty, inventory auditing, and perimeter maintenance. The workload was distributed evenly, ensuring no single group suffered from exhaustion while maintaining tight productivity.

The security schedule was unyielding: a tight patrol of guards swept the internal corridors on a rotating schedule, while two guards remained permanently stationed at the CCTV control station, monitoring every angle of the fortress layout.

Even the children felt the heavy, focused atmosphere of the base. In the residential suites, living room, Han Ye sat quietly in a corner. His dark eyes were fixed on the floor as he subtly manipulated his shadow domain, extending thin, ink-like shadow tendrils across the floorboards with unnerving focus.

Beside him, Gu An practiced maintaining her forcefield shield, her face flushed with concentration, while Su Xiao quietly worked through her energy control exercises under the watchful eyes of the off-duty soilders. The kids sensed the coming storm and worked harder at studying and refining their powers.

By late afternoon, the heavy supply convoy returned through the main gates, completely intact. Lieutenant Chen reported zero casualties, his transports loaded with dry grain, canned meat, and medical crates, all swept under Sun Hao’s administrative coverage.

As the squad unloaded the supplies into the central pantry, Ye Lin walked up to the central observation deck where Han Zheng and Lin Qing stood reviewing the perimeter trap logs.

Ye Lin stood at attention, his coat wrapped tight, his face calm, sharp, and resolute.

"Commander, Lin Qing," Ye Lin spoke, his voice quiet but steady.

Han Zheng turned to face him, his hands resting on his belt. "Report, Ye Lin."

"The perimeter traps are set, and the first batch of crimson-core firearms is near completion," Ye Lin began smoothly. "Once Dr. Zhou and Lin Qing finalize the red-stone weapon prototypes and arm the squad, my work here is done."

Lin Qing looked at him, recognizing the quiet determination in his eyes. "You’re leaving."

"I am," Ye Lin confirmed with a firm nod. "My mother is still being held captive. Director Chen is locked up, but my mother had no part in his schemes. I stayed to clear Block C’s logs and help secure this base, but as soon as the squad has energy weapons in hand, I am heading out alone to find her."

Han Zheng studied the young soilder for a long moment, respecting the cold, unyielding loyalty he held for his family.

"We won’t hold you back," Han Zheng said, his deep voice carrying steady weight. "When the weapons are fully tested, we will equip you with a crimson prototype and full supplies for the road."

"Thank you, Commander," Ye Lin said, offering a sharp military salute before turning to head toward the armory.

Lin Qing watched him leave, then turned back to the screens displaying the newly fortified base, the stored energy cores, and the bustling, disciplined compound. The Research Center was no longer just a temporary shelter—it was a fully operational, heavily armed fortress ready for whatever storm the thaw brought next.
