Chapter 253: Chapter 222: Gunfire 3

Without hesitation, she raised the pistol in her left hand and fired three quick shots—BANG, BANG, BANG—in the direction of the relentless Boss Li. Blood sprayed, forcing him to roll away in a pathetic attempt to dodge.

Using the opening created by her suppressive fire, Ye Qingniao dug her feet in and shot forward like an arrow loosed from its string, sprinting toward the armored car as it slowly reversed. At that moment, the massive steel vehicle was the safest moving fortress she could hope for.

’The sniper’s in the shadows. I can’t afford to get bogged down here!’

BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG...!

She emptied her magazine as she sprinted, continuing to suppress the three thugs attempting to give chase. A few seconds of a full-out dash brought her right up to the side of the armored car.

With a powerful leap, she latched onto the running board on the armored car’s left side. She clung to a handle with her left hand while using the flat of her sword to bang furiously on the armored plating by the driver’s seat. SLAM! SLAM! SLAM!

"Go!! Full speed!!"

She roared, jamming her longsword into a gap near the communication antenna on the roof to free up her hand and secure herself to the vehicle’s exterior.

Inside the vehicle, Cheng Qi heard her command. He saw through the observation slit that she was safe, and his heart pounded in his chest. He slammed the car into drive and stomped the accelerator to the floor!

VROOOM—!

The armored car let out a furious roar. Its tires churned up mud as it accelerated forward, charging ahead relentlessly.

But just as the vehicle began to pick up speed—

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Three more sudden, rapid gunshots!

But the sound didn’t come from the ruins on the right. It came from the left! From the shadows of a seemingly safe patch of greenery!

’The sniper!’

’In that short amount of time, he’d managed to circle around the armored car’s blind spot and get to the other side of the road!’

’So close! Less than thirty meters!’

At this range, the muzzle velocity of a rifle was too high for anyone to react. The hairs on Ye Qingniao’s arms stood on end. She instinctively tried to activate her ability again, but its continuous, high-intensity use had left her energy momentarily depleted.

At this range, it was too late to dodge, even with her ability. Of the three full-power rifle rounds, only the one aimed at her head was deflected by her magnetic field. It slammed into the bulletproof glass by the driver’s seat, shattering it into a spiderweb of cracks.

But the other two were unavoidable.

THUMP! THUMP!

The dull thuds of metal tearing through flesh sounded like two heavy hammers slamming into her body.

One bullet tore through her left chest. Most of its kinetic energy was absorbed by her tactical vest and bone, and it finally lodged in the armored plating behind her. The other pierced her abdomen. The sheer force of the impact slammed her backward, nearly throwing her from the vehicle!

"Pfft!"

A sweet, metallic taste filled Ye Qingniao’s throat as she coughed up a mouthful of blood. It spattered across the cold armor plating in front of her before the rain began to wash it away in crimson rivulets.

Agony and a sense of suffocation washed over her. Her strength gave out completely. Only her right hand, still jammed by the roof antenna, kept her from falling.

"Don’t... don’t stop!"

She felt the vehicle lurch—a sign that Cheng Qi was about to brake. Mustering her last ounce of strength, she roared with a ragged voice,

"...Go! Get us out of here!"

’If we stop now, we’ll both die at this sniper’s mercy!’

Her powerful will to live kept her mind from fading. Her trembling left hand fumbled for an inside pocket of her tactical vest and found the cold, hard object.

It was the life-saving serum Lin Fan had given her before he left.

Gritting her teeth, she tightened her grip on the injector, jammed it against the side of her neck, and slammed the plunger down!

THUMP! THUMP! THUMP!

Her heart began to pound wildly. Her blurry vision instantly sharpened, tinged with red. The strength that had been torn from her body by the two impacts came rushing back...

Her grip tightened, and she pulled herself flush against the armored car again, letting the rain lash down on her.

...

VROOOM—

A reflection on the armored car’s rear plate left a streak of light in the rain. With a roar of its engine, the steel behemoth left them in the dust, disappearing hundreds of meters away in the blink of an eye and leaving nothing but chaos in its wake.

"They’re fucking running?! We’ll see how far you get!"

Boss Li clutched his shoulder, blood seeping between his fingers. He had watched the prize slip right through his grasp and lost men in the process. His face twisted in fury.

He spun around, lifted a heavy, combat-booted foot, and viciously kicked one of his underlings who was just struggling to his feet.

THUD!

"Aargh!"

The lackey cried out as he was sent tumbling into a puddle. He was soaked in muddy water but didn’t dare make a peep, simply curling into a ball and trembling.

"Useless! A bunch of useless trash!" Boss Li raged, spittle flying as he waved his pistol around. "Goddammit! I wasted so many fucking bullets! And you couldn’t even stop one of them!"

Just as he was seething, a grating, scraping sound—SCRAPE... GRIND...—suddenly echoed from nearby.

Boss Li snapped his head around.

The young man Ye Qingniao had shot in the chest, the one who had stopped breathing long ago, was now staggering to his feet, leaning against a car for support.

’He’d turned.’

Not far from him lay two other unlucky bastards.

One had his femoral artery severed. Blood gushed out freely, staining a large puddle red. His face was as pale as a sheet, and he was on the verge of hypovolemic shock. The other was even worse off. He’d been electrocuted by Ye Qingniao, his body charred black and emitting a foul-smelling smoke. Though he was still twitching faintly, he was clearly a goner.

Seeing this miserable scene, the fury in Boss Li’s eyes gradually faded. A sinister smile spread across his face as he amiably reached down, pulled the underling he’d just kicked to his feet, and patted him on the shoulder.

"Go take care of that zombie."

"As for the other two, drag them back before they’re dead. At least we’ll have something to show the big boss. Don’t want this whole trip to be for nothing..."
