Apocalypse: I Built a City of Sin
Chapter 26: Upgrading the City of Sin
Shen Jiabin watched Xiao Yi carry Lin Mancha farther and farther away. At last, he could no longer endure the humiliation and rage burning inside him. He smashed a fist against the railing and roared with a twisted expression.
“Bastard! Fuck! That goddamn loser actually dared hit me! I’ll kill him!”
“He has a blade...” Gu Fanghua dropped his baseball bat and lowered his head dejectedly. “We aren’t his match.”
“Then we’ll go out and find blades of our own! Once we have decent weapons, we’ll storm that shelter and take our revenge!”
Shen Jiabin’s eyes were bloodshot. He raised his head and glared at Xiao Yi’s receding back.
“If a level-ten cripple can do it, there’s no reason we can’t. The only difference is that we haven’t shown as much courage! If we want to survive the apocalypse, we need to start acting like men!”
He clenched the baseball bat and growled, “That monster is dead. This is our perfect opportunity to fight our way downstairs and search for supplies! Once I find a proper weapon, I’ll cripple that trash with my own hands and make him kneel before me and beg for forgiveness!”
Even now, Shen Jiabin remained convinced that Xiao Yi’s combat power came entirely from his long-handled Mo blade.
In his mind, if he possessed a weapon like that, he could slaughter his way through the zombies just as easily.
“We’re almost out of food,” Tang Jingyan said, trying to rally the other three men. “If no one goes looking for more, we’ll starve to death up here. That man didn’t seem especially capable. Aside from the blade in his hands, his physical condition may even be inferior to yours. If he can move through a zombie horde so easily, then as long as all of you show some courage and cooperate, I’m sure you’ll be much stronger than him!”
Back inside the City of Sin, Xiao Yi had no idea that effortlessly killing the hulking zombie had filled the rooftop survivors with such confidence.
His only concern was how many attribute points he would receive after burying the special zombie.
He handed Lin Mancha over to Li Wanning and the others, removed the hulking corpse from his Spatial Pouch, and carried it to a Tomb that had just finished processing its previous occupant. Then he tossed the zombie inside.
Something strange happened.
The corpse bounced out like a rubber ball.
It crashed heavily onto the ground, making the three women giving Lin Mancha her introduction to the city’s rules cry out in fright.
Lin Mancha even jumped to her feet.
Xiao Yi stared blankly at the corpse for a moment, then turned toward the tombstone.
【C-rank zombie corpse cannot be buried. Please upgrade the Tomb...】
“A C-rank zombie?”
Xiao Yi stepped forward, grabbed the hulking corpse, and examined it with a frown.
“So this thing has already reached a higher rank? Do zombies have their own classification system?”
Only then did he take a closer look at what made the creature different.
It stood approximately two meters tall and weighed more than three hundred pounds. Besides its enormous build, its skin had begun to harden, granting it far greater defensive power than an ordinary zombie.
Xiao Yi also discovered a small black tendril growing from its head.
After studying the body for a while, he became even more certain that zombies could evolve.
He simply did not yet know what conditions triggered that evolution.
【Correct. Zombies are capable of evolving. Most zombies currently appearing are the lowest D rank. The few that have evolved are generally only C rank. Above C rank are B rank, A rank, S rank, and SR rank. Based on the amount of time that has passed since the apocalypse began, zombies above A rank cannot currently exist.】
The evolution of zombies would have been terrible news for an ordinary person.
For Xiao Yi, it was excellent news.
He needed more evolved corpses to increase his attributes.
“Upgrade the Tomb!”
【Apologies. The Tomb cannot currently be upgraded. Please upgrade the City of Sin to Intermediate rank first.】
What the hell? Now he had to upgrade the entire city?
Xiao Yi was speechless.
“Then upgrade the City of Sin first!”
【Upgrading the City of Sin to Intermediate rank requires 300 Apocalypse Coins. More structures will be unlocked after the upgrade, and existing structures will become eligible for upgrades. Would you like to proceed?】
【Upgrade Now】【Reconsider】
“Three hundred Apocalypse Coins? That’s ridiculously expensive!”
Building an entire Tomb cost only twenty coins, yet a single city upgrade cost three hundred.
He had struggled to accumulate nearly five hundred Apocalypse Coins, and half of them were about to vanish in an instant.
The thought made his heart ache.
“Upgrade now!”
Painful or not, the upgrade was essential.
Rumble!
The City of Sin suddenly shook violently. A blinding light flashed, and the wall expanded to twice its previous size in an instant, enclosing the entire athletic field.
【City of Sin successfully upgraded to Intermediate rank. Congratulations, Host. New structures have been unlocked.】
As the electronic voice faded, an enormous list of text appeared before Xiao Yi. The construction panel had filled with newly available structures.
