Apocalypse: I Built a City of Sin
Apocalypse — Chapter 89: Since You Insist on Courting Death
The next day, Xiao Yi visited the three Unsullied.
The name was inspired by Daenerys’s eunuch army in Game of Thrones. Xiao Yi used it for male subordinates who had lost certain functions.
The three young men had recovered considerably, though walking remained difficult.
For now, Xiao Yi abandoned the plan to send them to Lily New City to dismantle and transport the solar, water-supply, and purification equipment.
The work required both thought and strength, and they were in no condition to perform it.
“I’ll capture the remaining people first.”
After making his decision, Xiao Yi took Keke and Si Ruoqing and drove the Slaughterer Armored Vehicle back to Villa 026.
Inside, Duan Chengzhi and the four women waited anxiously.
Two days and nights had passed without any news from the three men. Repeated radio calls received no response, as though they had vanished.
“Could they be dead?” Duan Chengzhi’s wife asked worriedly. “Something feels wrong. Why would the water fail for no reason? Is someone deliberately targeting us?”
“Stop imagining things!” Duan Chengzhi snapped. “Zombies are everywhere. Who else could be outside? And why would anyone target us?”
Both spoke unclearly. Their cracked lips revealed how long they had gone without water.
“Then why haven’t their radios answered? It’s been days!” a young woman asked fearfully.
“They may have driven beyond the radio’s two-kilometer range,” Duan Chengzhi answered with a frown.
He knew he was deceiving himself.
Neither repairing the pipe nor searching for food required traveling that far.
There was only one likely explanation.
The three men had been killed.
Duan Chengzhi simply refused to face it.
“We should search for them!” one woman declared. “We have plenty of vehicles. There’s no reason to sit here and die! Even being bitten by zombies would be better than waiting to die of thirst.”
“Hello... static... pleased to meet you... static... Your friends are at my shelter... They’re doing very well... If you want to see them... I can take you there...”
A cold voice suddenly emerged from the radio.
Combined with the static, darkness, and zombies outside, it made all five people shudder.
“Who are you? What happened to our friends?” Duan Chengzhi’s wife asked.
“You’ll learn who I am soon... I offer two choices... First, accept my conquest, become my servants, and work properly for me... You’ll receive protection, food, and water... Second, prepare to experience endless pain... This is my final mercy... You have one opportunity to choose...”
The demonic voice and crackling static made everyone tremble.
“I knew someone was plotting against us!” a woman cried. “They captured all three men and took our gun. We can’t defeat them!”
“If he wants to negotiate, he must still fear us,” Duan Chengzhi said solemnly. “We can bargain. Besides, we don’t know whether he’s telling the truth.”
“But we’ve already gone a day without water. We’ll die of thirst!”
Duan Chengzhi hardened his expression and raised the radio.
“I want to speak with those three men.”
“That option was not among the choices I offered.”
“You’re lying, aren’t you? You want to trick us into opening the gate!” Duan Chengzhi answered with sudden confidence. “We may join you, but first let us hear their voices. And we’ll cooperate as equals, not become subordinates. Otherwise, there is no deal!”
He had decided that the other party feared them and was probably bluffing. His students were powerful, possessed a modified vehicle and rifle, and would be difficult to capture.
The thought of surrendering filled his eyes with defiance.
Dream on.
With his abilities, he believed he could thrive in the apocalypse.
Not far from Villa 026, Xiao Yi sat inside the armored vehicle and disconnected the radio with a cold smile.
“You rejected the easy path. I wanted to subjugate you comfortably, but you insist on courting death.”
He had planned to break their defenses through negotiation, bring them back, and subjugate them gently.
Violent subjugation could damage the mind, and most of those remaining were women. He had seen no need for brutality.
But there was no reason to waste more time.
Since they wanted to court death, he would let them savor the Rending Iron Maiden.
Xiao Yi dropped the radio and floored the accelerator.
The Slaughterer Armored Vehicle charged directly at Villa 026’s gate.
BOOM!
The steel gate was effortlessly smashed and shredded into scrap.
The armored vehicle stopped across the ruined entrance, blocking the zombies drawn by the noise.
