"How is that possible??" Xie Xuezheng turned to Wei Zhengtong in shock. "Why are you jumping to wild conclusions, just like Ningning and her mother? Kang Yunru is barely older than my own daughter. How could she possibly have any feelings for me?"

Wei Zhengtong rolled his eyes and smacked him. "You bookworm. I swear, you’re so buried in your experiments you’ve lost touch with reality! If Kang Yunru really didn’t have feelings for you, why would she scurry over to your wife and cause such a scene?"

"Sir." Gu Chen strode over, calling out to them from a short distance away.

Xie Xuezheng turned his head and glared daggers at Gu Chen.

’This is the punk who’s brazenly wormed his way into the Old Song Family and has my wife and daughter wrapped around his little finger.’

Gu Chen’s clear, dark eyes met Xie Xuezheng’s resentful gaze, and he smiled politely. "Sir, I hear that you’ve had people out looking for Aunt Song and Ningning all this time?"

"Then has no one told you, Sir, that for over a year, Ningning and Aunt Song have been right here in the Golden City Base?"

Xie Xuezheng froze, his face darkening as he glared at Gu Chen. "What are you trying to say, kid?"

Gu Chen just smiled faintly. "Sir, my meaning is simple. If, for over a year, you haven’t received a single shred of news about Ningning and Aunt Song... then shouldn’t you start investigating the people closest to you?’

Xie Xuezheng was stunned. When he looked up again, the young man gave him a slight nod before turning and leaving quickly.

Wei Zhengtong slapped his thigh. "Ah, Xiao Gu is right! Xue Zhi, where do you think all this resentment from Ningning comes from? Doesn’t it all stem from that woman, Kang Yunru?"

"Who did you put in charge of the search for the mother and daughter? Could there be a problem there? Kang Yunru, she..."

Wei Zhengtong was still chattering away when he saw Xie Xuezheng suddenly spin around and take off running.

"Hey, Old Xie, where are you running off to so fast? Wait for me."

「Base Infirmary」

Two young nurses had just hung up an IV drip when they heard a BANG from the doorway.

They turned to look, taken aback. "Dr. Xie?"

Wei Zhengtong waved his hand at the young nurses, motioning for them to leave.

Xie Xuezheng rushed to the bedside in a few long strides, his sharp gaze fixed on Kang Yunru, who was completely covered in bandages. "What did you do? What did you do to my daughter??"

Kang Yunru was currently wrapped in bandages from head to toe, with several broken bones in her back.

Suddenly seeing Xie Xuezheng rush up to confront her, she was utterly dumbfounded and stammered, "Dr... Dr. Xie?"

’Is Dr. Xie asking the wrong question?’

’What does he mean, what did I do to his daughter?’

’Shouldn’t Dr. Xie be asking what heinous things his daughter did to me?’

’Xie Ning beat me half to death, so how could Dr. Xie rush over to question me?’

Xie Xuezheng was seething. "Why did you go looking for my wife and daughter? I never told you to cause trouble for them."

"Besides taking matters into your own hands this time, what else have you done?"

"Doctor..." Kang Yunru’s tears flowed freely as she pursed her lips, looking utterly wronged.

"Cat got your tongue?" Xie Xuezheng’s anger flared. "You went to see Ningning and her mother on your own, making Ningning resent me so much. This is all your fault!"

’If hitting someone weren’t so... unbecoming, Xie Xuezheng would have charged forward and landed a few blows right on Kang Yunru’s head.’

Kang Yunru was wrapped in bandages from head to toe, looking utterly miserable.

Wei Zhengtong jumped in surprise. He glanced at Xie Xuezheng storming out like an angry lion, then back at the pitiful-looking Kang Yunru on the bed. He shook his head and sighed helplessly. "Miss Kang, why did you have to do this?"

Kang Yunru sobbed.

Her mouth and cheeks were so badly swollen from the slaps that it was difficult for her to speak. "Dr. Wei, it’s not... it wasn’t me, Dr. Wei. I never meant to destroy the relationship between Dr. Xie and his family, I... *sob*..."

"You shouldn’t have gone to see Ningning’s family in the first place," Wei Zhengtong said, shaking his head. "In what capacity did you go to them? It was bound to cause a misunderstanding between the mother and daughter, wasn’t it?"

With her heavily bandaged hand, Kang Yunru violently swept a water cup from the nightstand. Her eyes turned sinister as she stared at the door.
