Apocalypse Arrives: I Become a Powerhouse by Scavenging
Chapter 599 - 589: Sound Source Pollution 41
Soon, another commotion stirred through the crowd.
Following that, several people in uniform and full combat gear emerged from the crowd.
Having learned that someone here had actually captured two monsters alive, they had come specifically to take them away.
As a newly appeared monster species—and live specimens at that—these two ghost-like creatures held immense research value.
After a brief negotiation, the two monsters were formally handed over to them.
After all, most of the people present were ordinary civilians. Even if they managed to capture a monster, they wouldn’t know what to do with it. They couldn’t just take it along on their journey, could they? How would that be any different from carrying a ticking time bomb?
After taking the two ghost-like monsters away, one person did not leave with the rest. Instead, he walked toward them.
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK. The person outside rapped on the car window.
Hugh Finch lowered the window, looked at the man outside, and asked, "Can I help you?"
The man replied, "I heard from the others that you were the first to counterattack when the monsters struck, and that you killed the most of them. We also heard that you’ve developed a meditation method that can make people stronger. So, I’ve been sent to invite you to join us."
After hearing him out, Moira Lynch and the others knew everything else was just a preamble. The last sentence was his true purpose.
"I’m sorry, but we have no intention of joining any faction right now. As for the meditation method, if you want to know about it, you can ask Barry Wallace," Hugh Finch politely declined.
Seeming to have anticipated this response, the man didn’t get angry. He continued, "Don’t make a decision so quickly. You can take your time to think it over. Besides, just yesterday, when those ghost-like monsters first appeared, our Professor Wallace made a new discovery. This discovery might be related to the current apocalypse. Are you sure you’re not interested?"
At his words, Moira Lynch and the other two were instantly intrigued.
At the same time, the three of them began communicating in the Communication Corridor.
’Something’s not right. Telling us something so important just like that... it’s very strange. This guy seems desperate to have us go with him,’ Kai York said.
’Moira, can you directly access that Professor Wallace’s research data from your end?’ Hugh Finch asked.
Moira Lynch shook her head. ’I don’t even know who Professor Wallace is or where he’s located. How could I get it?’
’Besides, this guy is extremely goal-oriented. He seems certain we’ll go with him. In that case, let’s just go and see what’s up.’
Moira Lynch added. With her Space Talent, leaving was just a thought away anyway.
Besides, she didn’t think these people posed any real danger to them.
In the end, the trio couldn’t contain their curiosity and followed the man to the front of the convoy.
The moment they arrived, Moira Lynch paused and whispered to the two beside her, "I think I know why they were so insistent on bringing us here."
"Why?" Kai York asked curiously.
"Doesn’t Professor Wallace’s last name sound familiar? Professor Wallace, Barry Wallace."
They came to a tent, and upon stepping inside, they indeed saw a familiar face.
When Barry Wallace saw them walk in, his eyes lit up. "Young Lynn, Mr. Finch, you’re finally here!"
And beside him stood a man who looked to be in his forties or fifties, with graying hair, wearing a white lab coat and thick glasses.
"I’ve heard Barry mention you before. Thank you for taking care of my son along the way."
Looking at the outstretched hand, Hugh Finch shook it out of courtesy.
In an instant, Moira Lynch noticed a flash of white light in the man’s eyes. As if realizing something, she slapped their clasped hands apart and shot the man a hostile glare.
At the same time, a rapidly spinning Flying Wheel pressed against the man’s neck.
The sharp blade broke the skin on his neck, and a trickle of red blood flowed from the wound.
Moira Lynch’s actions were so fast that by the time the others around them reacted, it was already too late.
Barry Wallace watched the scene with a panicked expression. "Young Lynn, don’t be rash! My dad doesn’t mean any harm!"
Simultaneously, the guards responsible for the tent’s security rushed in, aiming their guns at the trio.
But in the next second, their bodies began to float uncontrollably into the air.
In contrast to the tense atmosphere in the tent, Professor Wallace, with a weapon at his throat, appeared exceptionally calm.
He first apologized to Hugh Finch for his earlier action, then ordered the men who had just rushed in to leave the tent and permit no one to approach.
After being lowered back to the ground, the men gave the trio a fearful glance before slowly retreating from the tent.
Soon, only Moira Lynch’s group of three and the father-son pair of Professor Wallace were left in the tent.
Moira Lynch retracted her Flying Wheel and slowly uttered three words: "Mind Reading Technique."
In its early stages, it requires physical contact to read someone’s thoughts.
Seeing that his talent had been exposed, Professor Wallace no longer tried to hide it. "I apologize for meeting you this way, but I can assure you, I mean you no harm. I simply wish to obtain more useful information from you to save this planet."
Professor Wallace had unintentionally read the memories of his son, Barry Wallace, and learned of the incredible encounters his son had experienced.
Upon discovering that their home world was also experiencing an apocalypse, he wondered if he could find a solution through them.
However, after reading Hugh Finch’s memories, he was disappointed. The apocalypses they faced were completely different.
While the Mind Reading Technique could instantly read a person’s thoughts and memories, a person’s memories from birth to the present were simply too vast. Even if he could read them all, it would be impossible to remember everything.
Professor Wallace was like a memory card; although he read a massive amount of memories, he couldn’t store them all. In the end, he could only choose to retain the specific parts he was looking for.
Just like now.
From Hugh Finch’s memories, he had only seen information about the apocalyptic natural disasters and that the Caelans had now relocated to another planet called Veridian Prime.
"If that’s the case, then you’ve come to the wrong people," Moira Lynch said. "We don’t know how to save your planet."
’If it weren’t for me being capable enough to find Veridian Prime, a planet so similar to Caelus, we’d still be suffering back on Caelus right now.’
’Before we entered the game, Caelus had already entered another ice age.’
’Vast numbers of people were dying every day, and the survivors could only eke out a meager existence, hiding in the Elf Tree Houses.’
