Warm lights and restless music tangled across the dance floor.
At the edge of the crowd, Jennifer swept her gaze over the room, hunting for something that looked worth eating.
She had already turned down several guys who didn’t make the cut. Too skinny. Cheap cologne that stank like it came off a drugstore shelf. Nothing that stirred her appetite.
Then she spotted him—a solid, athletic build, talking with friends while his eyes kept drifting her way.
She licked cracked lips. A faint red flicker passed through her eyes.
Jennifer lifted her glass, hips swaying just enough as she drifted past. Her shoulder bumped his. Wine spilled across the front of her thin dress, fabric clinging wet against her skin and tracing the soft outline of her chest.
She looked up at him, helpless.
“Sorry. It’s so crowded in here. I can barely breathe.”
The athlete recognized the cheer captain immediately. His face lit up. The friends might as well have vanished. He slid an arm around her waist without hesitation.
“No problem. Place is a zoo. Want somewhere quieter?”
Jennifer leaned into him. “Yeah. Come with me.”
He followed, half-hard already, ignoring the catcalls from his friends as she led him away from the crowd and into the corridor restroom.
The door had barely clicked shut before he pinned her against it, hands already working.
“You’re so fucking hot—”
He kissed her hard. Jennifer opened her mouth for him.
While one hand fumbled at his belt, her pupils shrank to pinpoints.
She bit down on something soft and yanked her head back.
The athlete’s eyes went wide. He clapped both hands over his mouth, trying to scream. Blood poured between his fingers the second his lips parted.
Jennifer’s jaws opened wider. She lunged and sank her teeth into his throat.
His eyes stayed locked open until the light drained out of them.
The smell of blood flooded the small room.
“Hn—”
The door swung open.
Jennifer’s head snapped around, face painted red.
The young man she had marked the moment he walked into the hall stood in the doorway, watching her. Beside him, a girl stared in pure shock.
As cheer captain, Jennifer knew exactly who Patty was—the rich girl half the guys on campus already wanted.
“Jen—Jennifer?!”
Patty’s fingers dug into Soren’s arm.
She had never cared about the cheer squad, but even she knew the name. Popular. Pretty. Not… this.
Jennifer’s gaze dropped to the hand locked around Soren’s arm. Jealousy and something uglier flashed through her eyes.
She rose slowly, wiping her face with the back of one hand.
“Patty—perfect timing. Let me show you—”
She never finished the sentence.
Jennifer launched herself at Soren.
A hard kick met her mid-air. Her body reversed direction even faster than it had come and smashed into the far wall.
Soren lowered his leg, face blank.
“She—how the hell did she turn into that?!”
Patty’s face had gone pale.
“No idea.” Soren stepped into the restroom. “Maybe she touched something she shouldn’t have.”
He was actually curious.
After he put Mammon down, fewer demons had risked crawling into the open. He had expected a quiet stretch. Instead here was another one, walking around a college campus like it owned the place.
Jennifer dragged herself up through the blood. Rage gave her strength she hadn’t had a minute ago. She threw her head back and screamed.
The subsonic wave punched straight through the restroom walls and rolled across the entire auditorium.
Glass exploded.
Crystal chandeliers and wall sconces shattered in a chain of sharp cracks. The bright, glittering dance floor plunged into total black.
“What the fuck?!”
“Power outage?!”
Students screamed. Phone flashlights flicked on in every direction.
Then the first real panic hit.
“Oh my god—what’s wrong with him?!”
“Blood! He’s bleeding!”
A few students closest to the restroom—weaker ones—collapsed where they stood, blood streaming from eyes, nose, and mouth.
More bodies dropped. Fear spread like fire.
“Poison! The fucking food is poisoned! Run!”
Someone shouted it and the hall lost its mind.
Students shoved and clawed toward the exits in the dark, bodies slamming into each other with no direction and no control.
On stage, Nikolai had already ridden out the first wave of panic.
He watched the chaos below and went cold and focused.
Lights out. Perfect cover. Heaven itself had handed him the moment.
Phone beams swung wildly through the crowd. He used them like searchlights, picking his next sacrifice.
Too pretty was out. Those ones had admirers who would notice a disappearance fast and call the cops.
Too ugly was also out. The ones they served didn’t appreciate junk.
Nikolai’s eyes moved carefully through the stampede.
Then they stopped.
In a quieter corner, a girl stood looking lost and scared, turning her head left and right. Even in the broken light she looked clean. Soft. Gentle.
Best of all—no boyfriend hovering over her, and she had a kid with her. The child’s face ruled out any mother-daughter angle in two seconds.
Nikolai smiled without warmth.
With his current fame and face, a single girl without money or protection was easy. A little concern, a little charm—
He grabbed a glass from a nearby table, straightened his jacket like he still cared how he looked, and started walking toward Carrie.
