Chapter 644 – A life for a life, and we want the white wolf too

At the end of the line, Ravyn’s fingers tightened around the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white. The weight of Voren’s accusation pressed down on him like a physical force. "Voren, what’s wrong?" His voice was tight, cautious.

After Voren narrated everything, the Lycan, the fight, Corvine’s critical condition, the pieces finally fell together in Ravyn’s mind.

He hated not having followed his instincts to find an excuse to stay behind to witness the last part. It ached him that Corvine was suffering when the guy had offended no one.

"I honestly knew King Jaron was up to something, but I never thought he’d bring a Lycan." Ravyn shook his head, frustration bleeding into his voice as he began to explain his part.

"When I arrived for this meeting in the outlands, I thought I’d finish quickly and return to referee the fight. But I was kept waiting for four good hours because the man showed up late."

He paused, his jaw clenching. "King Jaron had told me that this man was always on time, insisting that I leave early which I did. Then in the course of the meeting, he got furious and told me he was going to call me. Why do I feel like he was upset over the dead Lycan?"

He paused again as he began to piece it all together, his voice dropping with regret. "Also, Jaron was supposed to arrange the meeting earlier but intentionally delayed it. I’m so sorry. I should have seen it coming, shouldn’t have underestimated his hatred for Corvine."

Voren was about to end the call when something crossed his mind, a suspicion that had been gnawing at him. "Do you know why King Jaron is against Corvine marrying his daughter?"

Ravyn thought about it, turning the question over in his mind. But he only settled on the obvious, that Corvine was formerly a beta and the Alpha King wanted someone who had complete control of a pack. "Isn’t it because he’s the only co-Alpha?"

"Wrong." Voren’s voice was cold, sharp as a blade. "He’s doing it to get back at me. The reason why he never announced anything like this from the onset was because he had eyes on me. He wanted me to marry Liah, so he could use her to have access to my daughter." He paused, letting the words sink in. "When I refused, he tried to kidnap her."

He waited, and the sound of tires screeching on the other end told him he’d struck a nerve. "You mean Jaron wanted to kidnap my daughter?" Ravyn’s voice was barely controlled, fury simmering beneath the surface. "For what?"

"Why don’t you find out?" Voren said in annoyance, his patience wearing thin.

He was only lighting the match for Ravyn to see clearly, the severity of what he had gotten himself into.

Ravyn heaved a deep breath, the weight of the revelation settling on his shoulders. "I’m going back to the pack now. I’ll call to update you." The line went dead.

After hanging up, Voren was still not comfortable. His instincts screamed warning, a primal dread settling in his gut. He mind linked Damon, Kael, and Jasmine, his voice carrying the weight of command. ’To my suite now.’

Then he turned to Seraphine, his expression grim. "I think we should go. From what I’ve gathered from my chat with Ravyn, the man he had the meeting with was also a Lycan. And he seemed upset about something, abruptly ending the meeting."

He paused, his eyes darkening with concern. "I’ve been reading more about Lycans. Just like us, they are quite vengeful."

Seraphine quickly pieced it together, her mind racing. "So you think they will try to attack Corvine for killing one of their own?"

Voren nodded, his jaw tight. "We also know that they want Espe." The words came out like poison. "Right now, Jasper isn’t capable of protecting Corvine in his state, and Ravyn can’t have control of the Silver Moon pack because he isn’t the Alpha. It’s a recipe for disaster."

"I’ll get ready." Seraphine concluded, already moving toward the closet.

Voren smiled faintly, relief flickering across his features. Seraphine’s smart brain made conversations easier. As soon as he heard the doorbell, he met the three people in his luxurious living room.

"I’m leaving for the Silver Moon Pack with Sera." His voice was brisk, commanding. "You all know what to do. Kael, help Jasmine to take care of the kids. Damon, the pack is in your hands." He met each of their gazes in turn. "Inform my father and the shamans about all that has happened."

The three people nodded, their expressions serious and focused. Seraphine stepped out, her bag slung over her shoulder. "Let’s go."

"We live by the chopper." Voren said as they all walked out together. The rotor blades were already spinning, the machine whirring to life. With the chopper, it didn’t take them long to arrive at the Silver Moon pack. The sound of the rotors was enough to draw attention, and Jasper went to meet them, his face pale and worried.

"I’m sorr—" he began, his voice apologetic.

But Voren waved his hand dismissively. "Just take me to Corvine."

When they arrived at the hospital wing, it was true. Corvine lay unconscious on the bed, his chest bandaged, his face pale and drawn. The rhythmic beep of the heart monitor was the only sound in the room.

Liah’s pale form sat beside him, her eyes red-rimmed, her hand gripping his. Her face lit up at the sight of Seraphine, hope flickering in her exhausted eyes.

She remembered the first time she saw Corvine get injured. When she thought all hope was lost, Seraphine had used her powers to heal Corvine.

However, just as Seraphine was about to approach them, a commotion erupted outside. "A life for a life!" A voice bellowed from beyond the walls. "And we want the white wolf too!"
