Kael smiled with unease, his gaze fixed on a point somewhere past Voren’s shoulder. Discussing this with his Alpha while so many pressing matters demanded their attention felt almost frivolous.
But his Alpha had brought it up, and Kael could not refuse. Also, he was moved that his Alpha cared about his love life.
"Alpha Voren, I’ll be honest." He took a steadying breath. "I don’t want to pursue Jasmine anymore."
Voren’s expression remained indifferent, carefully neutral. But inwardly, he was disturbed. Jasmine was so desperate to be loved, so hungry for affection that she had thrown herself at every man who showed her even a sliver of kindness.
Voren had wanted her paired before she allowed her obsession to consume her completely. Also, he didn’t want her mated out of the Grimroot pack because Jasmine knew too much Voren’s personal life.
She could be the weapon of the enemy if she falls into the wrong hands. But Kael’s explanation rendered him speechless.
"I know she’s in love with Co-Alpha." Kael’s voice was flat, carrying no trace of jealousy or bitterness. "And to be honest, I’m very disappointed. For someone who had been brought because of you, and has faced your constant rejection..." He paused, shaking his head slowly.
"I kind of hoped the pain would prevent her from giving out her heart again. I thought she would have learned. But I was wrong."
Voren raised a brow, only one question sitting on his mind. "How did you know all this?"
Kael smiled, though it didn’t reach his eyes. The expression was hollow, a mere courtesy. "Alpha, I heard and saw things at the full moon festival." He paused, weighing his words.
"I heard Jasmine talking with some of the other she-wolves. Yeah, Emery and Tallulah. They all seem to have eyes on Co-Alpha, but it’s understandable." A shrug lifted his shoulders. "Co-Alpha is a genuinely pleasant person. He’s kind, he listens, he makes people feel seen. It’s easy to fall for someone like that."
Voren did not expect to hear this. The revelation that multiple women had set their sights on Corvine was unexpected, but he could see the truth in Kael’s words.
Still, neither could he force Kael to continue pursuing a love interest he had given up on. That would only breed resentment.
"What if you both turn out to be mates during the Blood Moon festival?" Voren asked, his voice carrying a note of genuine curiosity.
Kael smiled again, this time with a hint of resignation. "Then I don’t have a choice. I would accept her." His voice was matter-of-fact.
"But without the mate bond, I won’t go ahead with my plan of pursuing her. Jasmine is a very beautiful woman, but she falls for the wrong men. I love her, especially the way she takes care of kids because I want to have a lot in the future" His gaze flickered with something unreadable. "But sadly, she doesn’t see the ones who would truly value her."
A movement caught their attention, and they both turned to see Jasmine at the entrance. From her expression, the wide eyes, the slightly parted lips, the flush creeping up her neck, it was clear that she had heard a lot. Perhaps everything.
But Kael only smiled and asked, "Alpha, is there anything else?"
"No." Voren’s voice was warm, and genuine. "I’m glad we had this chat."
When Kael reached Jasmine, she grabbed hold of his hand, her fingers wrapping around his wrist with surprising desperation. "Can we talk?" Her voice was breathless. "I won’t take much of your time."
"Sure." Kael shrugged, his expression unreadable.
Jasmine turned to Voren. "Voren, the kids want to share your bed. They miss you and Sera."
Voren was stunned. Those kids looked like they didn’t need them. They had been so independent, so content with their own company. But it warmed his heart that they still missed them, that they still craved their presence.
Before he could respond, Seraphine, who was still eating, responded with a mouthful of food. "Sure they can. I miss them so much."
Jasmine smiled, exiting the dining room with Kael to the elevator. The doors slid shut, enclosing them in silence.
As soon as they stepped out on the residential floor, she dragged Kael to her room, her grip firm and insistent.
Espe and Bryan were busy painting in the living area, their small faces focused on their artwork, so they moved to the balcony. The cool air hit them, carrying the scent of pine and earth.
"Is it true that you had an interest in me?" Jasmine’s voice was small, vulnerable. Regret flooded her features. She regretted not being patient, not allowing a man to make a move on her.
Now she was regretting everything because while she had lusted after Voren, Kael had been patiently waiting for her, and she hadn’t even noticed.
Kael smiled, though it didn’t reach his eyes. The expression was distant, almost pitying. "It doesn’t matter anymore." His voice was soft but firm. "Your heart is somewhere else."
Jasmine wanted to cry. Out of all men, she never thought Kael would be interested in her. The guy was always too serious with his job, his expression perpetually focused and intent.
Unlike Corvine, who used to smile and talk to her a lot, making her feel seen and valued, Kael was the opposite. He was all business, all pack duty. He hardly even looked at her.
But it wasn’t just her, it was the same for other she-wolves. Kael kept everyone at arm’s length.
"No." Jasmine argued, her voice teary. "I never thought you’d like someone like me."
Kael froze at her words. "What do you mean like someone like you?" He asked, his voice carrying a hint of sharpness. His eyes narrowed slightly, hiding his annoyance behind a mask of calm. The question hung in the air between them, charged with unspoken meaning.
