All My Summons Become Divine Girls
Chapter 719: The Thousandth Name
Lady Zarvine stepped onto the glass of the Second Name, trailing her rapier like a dragged umbrella. Lucan adjusted his black cuffs, studying a face as tired as any night porter’s at shift’s end.
"Lord Lucan Kessarine, a pleasure, I will be taking your name this evening," she said, stifling a yawn.
"You may attempt it, Lady Zarvine, I suspect you will find it heavier than expected."
"They all say that, they are all wrong."
The Courtesy of Names was a plain duel with one rule, any name the rapier spoke was taken. A thousand names already hung from Zarvine’s sleeves like gloves, pale scraps whispering in a thousand different voices.
"Begin," Ibaran called, setting his cup down with a soft click.
Zarvine lunged, Namesake flicking toward Lucan’s chest in a thin bright line, quick as a thought. He turned the point with his forearm, feeling the cold edge search patiently for his sleeve.
"Lucan," she said in Cessy’s voice, soft and teasing, "come home."
His stomach clenched, but his face stayed perfectly still, polite as a locked door.
’She is wearing my sister’s voice to see if I flinch, so I give her nothing.’
"A clever trick, Lady Zarvine, although my sister has never once asked me politely."
Lucan pulled one hand from his pocket, frost climbing his fingers in a lace of white. Winter Margin burst across the glass in six long lances, each tipped with a crystal edge.
Zarvine smiled in a flirting woman’s voice, "Frost, how charming, my last opponent was a flame."
"Your last opponent is currently very cold, I assume."
Zarvine twisted through them with bored grace, the lances shattering against her hip in a rain of ice. Her rapier slid a name from a spectator’s sleeve, flinging that whimpering scrap between them like a shield.

"You borrowed a man’s name for a shield, Lady Zarvine, that is hardly sporting," Lucan murmured, circling.
She shrugged, answering in a bored old woman’s voice, "He is asleep, he will not miss it."
Lucan flicked his wrist, the Blood-Pact Whip cracking from his palm in a ribbon of dark red. It wrapped the rapier at the guard, yanking her forward as her feet skidded across the glass.
"He’s really good at this, isn’t he?" Hajin whispered from the stands, grinning.
"Of course he is, he’s a Kessarine," Cessy said stiffly, her nails digging into the bone.
"Watch her left hand, he keeps glancing at it," Vella murmured, sipping her cup.
"The stupid peacock is winning," Juna growled, "so why does Zarvine look so sad every time she swings?"
"She looks like she is carrying something heavy," Loccy said quietly, "and she is not allowed to put it down."
He read the pattern in three exchanges, each parry a quiet sentence she kept finishing the same way. Zarvine stole the name nearest her point, from the left side, half a second after every single lunge.
’Left sleeve, only the left, she never touches anything on the right.’
Lucan feinted high with the whip, then dropped a lance of ice pinning her hand flat. A second lance crossed her throat, hovering a finger’s width from her skin, trembling with cold.
"Yield, Lady Zarvine, keep every name you own," he said, breathing hard.
"I would like to... I truly would," she whispered, her voice cracking like old paper.
"Then lower the rapier, Lady Zarvine, nobody here is forcing you," Lucan said.
"Everyone here is forcing me, that is the whole point of the court."
’That nod is an order, she obeys it like a hound, none of this was ever a duel.’
Lucan glanced up to the dais, where Ibaran smiled kindly and gave the very smallest nod. It was the nod a host gives a servant carrying a tray, patient, kind, perfectly final.
Zarvine breathed against the ice, "Forgive me, my lord, it is not my hand that moves."
The rapier moved anyway, her pinned hand slipping free as though the ice never held it. Namesake touched his chest, then something cold and enormous left him like a long held breath.

[Stolen: Lucan Kessarine]
[Name removed]
"I am sorry," Zarvine said, in a nursemaid’s voice, "I am truly sorry."
"You were kind to me, my lord, it is so much worse than cruelty," Zarvine whispered.
In a box above the glass, Matron Ysolde Kessarine watched her son without blinking, her fan folded perfectly still.
Frost faded from his fingers, the whip dissolving into plain air as he stared at his empty hands. Zarvine lowered the rapier, her tired face crumpling, as if she stabbed a child instead of a duellist.
He frowned at his empty palms, "How strange... I feel as though I have misplaced something important."
Lucan blinked slowly at the crowd, polite and puzzled, a stranger wearing a very fine black suit. His gaze found a red-haired woman gripping the gallery rail, her face gone white as old paper.
"Madam, are you well, you look as though you have seen a ghost?" he asked, bowing slightly.
"Stop it, it isn’t funny, say something rude to me, anything," Cessy whispered, her voice cracking.
He tilted his head, "I beg your pardon, Madam, I do not believe we have met."
She screamed his name, vaulting the rail to sprint across the glass, "LUCAN!"
"Cessy, wait, don’t touch the—" Hajin shouted, lunging after her.
"Let her go, nobody alive can stop that one now," Vella said, gripping his sleeve.
She was already clear of the rail and halfway across, too far ahead for any outstretched hand to catch her.
She seized his face in both hands, shouting his name again and again until her voice cracked. The name slid off him like water off polished marble, leaving not a single ripple behind him.
"My name is Cessy," she sobbed, "you called me that when you could not even pronounce it, you idiot."
"Your hands are very warm, Madam," he observed, not moving away.
Above the sobbing woman, Zarvine stood with the rapier hanging at her side, her knuckles white around the grip.
Ibaran lifted his cup from the dais, "Splendid, Lady Zarvine, you may rest now."
"The Courtesy of Names goes to Lady Zarvine," the masked chancellor announced, "the third and last shall be set at the Table."
"Do not look away, darling, a Kessarine watches the end of everything," Ysolde murmured to nobody in particular, her fan still folded.
"Why is nobody helping him?" Loccy whispered, her hammer-hand trembling on the rail.
"I am very sorry for your distress, Madam, I fear you have mistaken me for someone else," he said gently.
’Whoever this poor woman is, she is crying, I wish I knew how to make it stop.’
Cessy’s hands fell from his cheeks, her lips trembling, her proud smirk shattered into something raw.
"Somebody get him a coat, he looks cold."
Lucan turned from her politely, brushing a speck of frost from his sleeve as he went away. Hajin shouted something from the stands, but the words slid past him like wind on a window.
Cessy dropped to her knees on the glass, "Please turn around, I am begging you, just turn around."
He walked calmly toward the edge of the arena, where a thread bridge ran over the darkness. Below the rail the Hush waited, a silent, patient dark that already called nameless things like dogs.
