All My Summons Become Divine Girls
Chapter 685: A Life Resumes
The bus lurched past Ashley’s stop while Captain Brann Keld listed his fees from the phone in her palm.
"Wait, wait, wait, that was my stop!"
She slapped the bell twice, and the driver braked half a block later with a long-suffering sigh.
On the little screen, Hajin stood in a muddy lower yard, tapping the buyer’s purse on his belt.
"And how many have finished paying?"
"Debts are private matters," the captain answered, calm as a clerk.
’Private debts, closed road, that is not a fee, that is a cage with paperwork.’
"Your machine gets fed, your valley stays dry, and these people walk home tonight, how’s that sound, Captain?"
Ashley jogged up the sidewalk with the phone held at her chin, nearly colliding with a man carrying a ficus.
’Four o’clock, three boards, Nadia’s first pitch as lead, and I’m jogging behind a toll argument.’
The clock above the design firm’s door read 3:58, and the red recording dot still pulsed in her screen’s corner. Hajin was still waiting on an answer when Ashley stopped the recording and pocketed the phone without a second look.
Nadia met her in the lobby with three foam boards under one arm and a pencil clamped between her teeth.
"You’re two minutes early," she mumbled around the pencil, "which for you this month counts as a miracle."
"I almost rode past your building watching a man charge rent for a roof."
"Of course you did, grab the left side," Nadia snorted, tipping the boards toward her.
They hung the boards in the glass meeting room, Ashley holding each corner level while Nadia judged from the doorway.
"Left side down a hair, no, your other left—"
"I have exactly one left, and it’s tired."
Nadia snickered and stepped back, squinting at the boards like they owed her money.
"Perfect, now go away before the client sees your toll-road face," she shooed, flapping the pencil at the door.
The client arrived at four sharp, and Ashley slipped out to the hallway with coffee and a dark phone screen.
Her thumb hovered over the stream app twice, and twice she put the phone face down on the windowsill.
’The fort kept going without me, and I hate how normal that feels.’
Through the glass she watched Nadia win the room in twenty minutes, pointing at boards Ashley helped hang straight.
---
That evening Ashley opened the public archive on her laptop while Nadia claimed the couch with a pizza box.
The moderator thread already ran forty messages long, and none of them agreed about Captain Brann Keld’s proposal.
Ashley typed into the thread, reading aloud as she went, "I missed the middle, so what actually changed, not what everyone feels changed?"
The first co-moderator answered with timestamps, and the summary read like a receipt from the muddy yard.
"Hajin offered silver wages and expedition food, the captain refused outright, and then came the wheel," Ashley read aloud.
Then four workers turned Captain Brann Keld’s gate wheel, and water slid across the lower road in one brown sheet. Afterward he granted Hajin one inspection of the sagging beam, and that offer was where the two moderators split apart.
"One says the inspection is a real concession, and the other says it’s bait with a smile on it," Ashley muttered, scrolling.
"And chat?"
"Chat says he’s a cartoon villain, a misunderstood engineer and a secret prince, all inside the same minute."
[ IronVanguard: He flooded a whole road just to win an argument, what is there to debate? ]
[ TacticalNerd: We saw one gate and ten minutes of talking, nobody here has seen his books. ]
[ HearthKeeper: The workers behind him never looked up once, and that tells me plenty. ]
’Ten minutes of footage, and everyone already knows his entire heart, how impressive.’
She pinned a short note above the thread before anyone could start a fourth theory about secret royalty.
[ ashley(mod): The archive shows one gate, one refusal and one inspection offer, so motives stay labeled as guesses. ]
A new handle surfaced in the replies, and Nadia leaned over the couch arm to read it aloud.
[ freight_empress: I’ve run trucking and warehouses for thirty years, so here’s how that kind of debt works where I live. ]
[ freight_empress: If one owner controls the only road out and also sells the food along it, the balance grows faster than any wage. ]
[ freight_empress: Company towns did it with scrip, you can’t leave till you’re paid up, and you can’t get paid up without the road. ]
"That’s horrifying," Nadia said, pizza frozen halfway to her mouth, "and weirdly specific."
"It’s an analogy," Ashley said, already typing, "a good one, but she’s describing our world, not their law."
[ ashley(mod): Useful analogy from freight_empress, labeled as an analogy, since nobody here knows the fort’s actual laws. ]
[ freight_empress: Fair, I know trucks, not their courts, and I’d still want to see who keeps the ledger. ]
Ashley sat back with a small, satisfied hum and stole the pepperoni Nadia was guarding.
"See, that’s my favorite kind of expert, the kind who says where her map stops."
"You said the same about the accountant," Nadia pointed out, one eyebrow arched.
"The accountant earned it too."
Nadia set the crust down and studied her the way she studied a client brief before a big pitch.
"Real question, has all this made you want a different job, like a public one?"
Ashley stared at the frozen gate on her screen, then pulled her knees up and wrapped both arms around them.
"Maybe, the evidence part, sorting what’s real from what’s loud," she admitted quietly, "I’m good at it, and it matters."
"You’d be good on camera too, the veneers guy still quotes you."
"I don’t want the camera, I want the folder labeled careful and enough sleep to read it."
"But?"
"But I want a life where I show up at four when I say four," Ashley sighed, picking at the pizza box lid, "and today I almost didn’t."
Nadia’s mouth softened into something gentler than teasing, "You did show up, and the boards were straight."
"Barely straight."
"Straight enough to win a client, so I’m counting it."
Ashley laughed, and the knot behind her ribs loosened for the first time since the bus.
’Appointments first, then the archive, and the fort doesn’t get to own every evening.’
The live broadcast chimed in its corner before she could close the tab, and the camera swung toward a campfire.
Hajin held a sheet of bark up to the lens with both hands, firelight jittering across smudged lines of charcoal. Ferra’s drawing showed an upstream channel, the captain’s gate and the lower road drawn beneath it in heavy black strokes.
"Okay, Earth, homework time," he announced, waggling the bark like a festival prize, "Ferra drew how the water moves through that fort, and she won’t let anyone sleep till somebody smart checks it."
"I said nobody sleeps till it’s checked, you lump," Ferra growled from just outside the frame.
"Same thing, she’s just meaner about it."
"Is he giving the internet homework?" Nadia asked, craning over the back of the couch.
"He’s giving it to me, apparently."
A short line ran off the lower road’s edge and simply stopped, ending in charcoal with nothing drawn after it.
’One question, then pizza, and the rest of tonight belongs to my own couch.’
She typed it carefully, then read it over once before sending it into the live queue.
[ ashley(mod): Question on the drawing, when the gate floods the lower road, where does the overflow go, since that small channel just stops? ]
Hajin squinted at the chat only he could read, then turned the bark around and squinted at it too.
"Huh, our mod wants to know where the overflow goes after the road," he muttered, tapping the stubby line, "and honestly, me too?"
"Nowhere, on that sketch," Ferra snapped, snatching the bark closer to the flames, "and water doesn’t go nowhere."
"Then it goes under something," Loccy hummed, one long ear flicking toward the drawing as she chewed.
"Under the road," Ferra muttered, dragging a blackened thumb along the line, "or under the yard, damn it."
"Tomorrow we look at that overflow channel properly, nice catch up there," Hajin promised, flashing the lens a thumbs-up.
[ Seoul_Tactician: Our mod asked one question and the forge lady started swearing, best outcome possible. ]
[ ShadowMage44: Homework from another world, and Ashley turned it in first, of course. ]
Ashley closed the laptop on Ferra’s scowl and turned back to the couch, where Nadia saved her the last slice.
"Done already?"
"Done for tonight, they’ve got a channel to chase, and I’ve got pizza."
