All My Summons Become Divine Girls

Chapter 594: Behind Borrowed Faces

  • Next Chapter

Hajin saw the baker’s crooked rabbit ears before he saw the face holding the bread, recognizing the little mistake from the flour-covered tray she had shown him.

The memory turned beneath the broken floor.

A hand reached toward the dough with a pen between two fingers, correcting a grip the baker’s own hand still remembered after the person beside her had disappeared.

"That one," he said.

Vella crouched at the inspection gap, following the image until black thread drew it beneath another face.

"I see the edge."

He kept both blades lowered while Ferra checked the descent into the exposed sanctum, waiting until she fixed the last brace before moving past her.

The broken vault opened onto a lower floor that still held beneath his boots, its central fixture surrounded by records turning slowly around the wounded silver sliver.

They had looked like pages from above.

Here, each one carried a moment too small for the violence holding it in place.

Someone tying a child’s shoe, someone spilling water over a clean table, a woman laughing with her mouth full before she remembered to cover it.

Hajin stopped at the edge of the nearest turning record.

’All the things nobody thinks to guard.’

"Don’t touch the faces," Vella told the people following him down.

She pointed beneath a folded image where its support had begun tightening, showing Nari the black filament pulling it toward an exposed seam in the floor.

Nari placed her claws beside that spatial opening, pinning its edge before the thread could drag the record into it.

The image stopped turning.

The woman inside it went on laughing.

Hajin looked back toward the broad landing, finding the protected girl seated beside the Sanctuary wall with Ash awake at her side.

His mother had risen behind them, blocking the outer approach while Juna watched the open height above the landing.

The children could reach the guarded passage without coming down these steps.

Hajin kept that route in sight while the next record beyond Nari’s claws unfolded into a face he knew.

Marta looked out of the turning light.

Her hair was caught behind one ear, the expression around her eyes carrying the tired patience he remembered from the woman whose last vigil they had ended.

"Come home."

Juna’s hands went to her ears before she lowered them with a sharp breath, staring at the image as another mouth repeated the invitation in a different voice.

Hajin felt the words find the place where he had wanted to give Marta more than a final kindness.

The face waited there.

"She wasn’t waiting for us here," he said, keeping his attention on the thread moving its mouth.

Vella touched the intact margin below it, holding the image clear while violet followed the difference between a preserved expression and the thing using it to speak.

"The memory is hers."

"The sentence?"

"Coming through the binding."

Marta’s mouth moved again before Vella finished, the borrowed invitation reaching past them toward the people waiting above.

Juna stepped between its line of sight and the children.

"Don’t answer the voices," she called, keeping her own hands down this time.

The central mechanism brightened beneath its stolen faces, revealing a silver housing wrapped around the smaller wounded sliver.

Black filaments entered that housing through one narrow channel.

They emerged wearing other people’s expressions.

"I kept them," the mechanism said.

Hajin looked at the laughing woman still held beside Nari’s claws, then at the black thread trying to pull her memory back into the turning ring.

"You took them."

"I preserved what their owners would have lost."

The voice used Marta’s mouth for the last word, making Hajin’s right hand tighten around the divine blade until the ache reminded him how close the record lay to its edge.

He lowered the point farther.

"Vella?"

"I can separate this margin," she said, holding the laughing woman’s image steady, "I need somewhere to put what comes free."

Sava brought the first empty witness plate to the foot of the steps, setting it onto a padded support outside the black threads’ reach.

One corner rocked against the uneven floor.

Ferra caught it before Sava could press the opposite edge down, sliding a folded strip beneath the support until the plate stayed level without a hand holding it.

"Leave that side clear."

Sava moved her ink case to the lower step, making room for the next receiving plate beside the first.

Hajin watched her compare their clean surfaces with the copied edge marks from the material already delivered to its families’ chosen stores, keeping those earlier receipts apart from the empty plates waiting here.

"How will we know which is which?"

She pointed to the small matching marks on plate and covering.

"The edge stays with its record, even when we don’t know the person yet."

Above her hand, the laughing woman spilled a little water from the cup she held, reaching to catch it with a movement the turning image had already shown twice.

Hajin waited for the next part.

The record began again at the laugh.

He looked toward the mechanism tightening the thread beneath it, wanting the woman to have been allowed to finish something as ordinary as wiping her own table.

Sava set the matching cover beside the waiting plate.

"Ready."

The witness array answered the preserved margin with a faint glow.

Vella kept the contact without pulling yet, watching the mechanism tighten another filament around the image as soon as its receiving plate lit.

"It is fastening the wrapper to the memory."

Didi knelt beside her, following the black strand back to the point where it tried to turn possession into part of the record itself.

"Let me hold that part."

Frost gathered short of the image, arresting the claim at its exposed contact while Vella eased the margin away from its pull.

The woman’s remembered laughter continued untouched.

Hajin studied the gap their two hands had opened, finding the shape of a strike he could trust only after everything inside that gap had moved.

Aria set three colors beside the exposed layers in his view, marking the mortal records blue, the choosing mechanism amber, and its attached ownership bindings black.

The wounded divine sliver remained separately identified within the housing.

"The mechanism is cooperating with the bindings," she said.

"Then make it stop cooperating."

Vella’s reply came from beside the held margin, her gold briefly reaching the active channel without entering the stolen memory.

The mechanism pulled away from her offered separation.

"I will keep the chorus."

Hajin watched it close its own access around the black line, confirming the choice with an action that tightened every stolen record around it.

"It is willing," he said, looking at the preserved faces, "that doesn’t make everyone attached to it willing too."

Nari shifted her claws along the exposed seam, catching a second thread that had tried to carry its record around Didi’s frost.

"This one leads back into the same casing."

Ferra set a narrow inspection brace beneath the moving channel, holding its outer sleeve open without driving the tool through either layer inside it.

Hajin stored the demonic blade, then the divine, leaving both hands free before approaching the exposed binding.

He braced his right hand on the ordinary fixture while his left palm met the single hostile channel Ferra had uncovered.

Collector’s Grasp caught its attached pressure.

The answering ache traveled up his arm before Divine Eye separated the command’s narrow seam from the material it had wrapped around itself.

Hajin opened his six Rings, fixing Phase Lock on that one supplied frequency as the black line tried to withdraw beneath his palm.

"There," he said.

Aria marked the sampled seam through the diagnostic view, letting the others see its route along the casing without asking them to follow the moving faces.

Ferra fixed a bright strip of witness linen beside the physical gap, its ordinary color giving his eyes a reference when the chorus changed the light again.

Hajin released Grasp after the sample held, withdrawing his left hand before the channel could take another measure of his skin.

His fingers trembled against his thigh.

The seam remained marked.

"Binding and the mechanism carrying it," he told Vella, "everything blue moves first."

She nodded toward the empty plates Sava was arranging beyond Nari’s held seam.

"Then keep it where I can separate it."

"You will leave them with pain," the chorus said.

The laughing woman vanished beneath another preserved face, its eyes opening on an expression of such private fear that Hajin looked at the black channel instead.

"I can remove what hurts."

Vella’s hands stayed around the uncut margin.

"Those memories aren’t yours to choose between."

Above them, a latch lifted where the landing had no door.

Hajin turned before the wooden sound finished, seeing a narrow laboratory entrance open in the air directly above the protected girl’s head.

The light beyond it was too white.

She pressed herself against the Sanctuary wall, her empty hand searching beside her until Ash caught it with both of his.

Juna stepped beneath the spectral threshold while the Watcher moved closer behind the children, one burned palm braced against the wall clear of the girl’s shoulder.

"Up here," Juna called, giving the sentries the height before anyone could mistake the threat for the passage at their backs.

Two guards turned their ordinary shields toward the opening, keeping their feet beside the children’s physical route out.

Hajin took one step toward the stair.

The girl looked down at him without moving her hand off the wall.

"I can take that room away," the mechanism said through the laboratory door, "leave you the parts that belong in a better life."

Hajin stopped with his foot on the first step, hearing what he wanted to answer before he had heard what she would say.

The girl looked at the white light.

Her fingers tightened around Ash’s.

Below the stair, Vella kept the mortal records clear of Didi’s waiting frost while Nari held the exposed hostile seams, giving the answer above them somewhere to arrive before the blades did.
