All My Summons Become Divine Girls
Chapter 578: What Paper Keeps
Hajin closed all six Rings while Sava held the family ledger open, the fading letters continuing beneath her thumb after the last halo disappeared from his arm.
The ink had not blurred into the page.
It was leaving.
A woman in a baker’s apron stood beside the table with both hands pressed against her stomach, watching a blank place she seemed to recognize without knowing what belonged there.
"There should be somebody with me."
Sava looked up from the disappearing line.
"Who?"
The woman opened her mouth.
Her fingers tightened in the apron before she shook her head, the missing answer making Hajin’s own hands feel cold beneath their fresh dressings.
"I know there should be somebody."
He looked from her face to the ledger, finding the worst part in the small space between those two ordinary things.
The family could still feel the absence.
The record was losing even that much.
Sava held her smudged thumb clear of the next line while Hajin opened the shop, his attention moving past tools that would have been useful ten minutes ago.
[ freight_empress: another 300000 for the witness records, keep what people can still tell you ]
The repeated gift arrived in the public view after he turned the ledger’s condition toward the Stream, its purpose clear beside the faces waiting around the table.
[ Wallet before: 40,935 credits ]
[ Donation: 300,000 credits ]
[ Wallet after: 340,935 credits ]
[ Stream Credits after freight_empress repeat gift: 340,935 ]
Hajin found the Memory-Recording Kit in the catalogue, opening its description while Sava kept the baker’s unfinished sentence on an ordinary sheet beside the endangered ledger.
"New accounts?" he asked Aria.
"It can preserve testimony recorded into it."
"The missing names?"
[ Existing Memory Recovery: None ]
He kept looking at that row for one breath before confirming the purchase, the need on the baker’s face giving him plenty of reason to buy what the kit could actually do.
[ Wallet before: 340,935 credits ]
[ Purchase: 300,000 credits ]
[ Wallet after: 40,935 credits ]
[ Purchased: Memory-Recording Kit ]
The Fragment’s Blessing worked through the purchased apparatus as it came into his hands, its recording surfaces settling into a stronger arrangement around the same purpose he had chosen.
[ Blessing outcome: Legendary Witness-Ledger Array ]
[ Stolen Memory Recovery: Unavailable ]
Sava cleared a safe part of the table for it.
Hajin set the array down there with both hands, its weight resting on the ordinary surface while she steadied the first plate beneath the recording frame.
The old family ledger remained beside it with its damaged page open.
Nothing filled the blank line.
Tessa came from the relief kitchen carrying the recipe she had been using, her finger marking the place where the next batch of bread needed its resting time.
"Test it with something we know."
Hajin moved aside for her.
She gave the recipe in her own voice, pausing once to correct the amount of water she had started saying before the new testimony settled onto the first plate.
The array kept the correction with the account.
Tessa read it back from the finished surface, her mouth moving at the place she had caught herself before she nodded at Sava.
"That is what I said."
The baker in the apron stepped closer while Tessa lifted the plate, her eyes following a record that had managed to keep an ordinary mistake without turning it into a cleaner lie.
Sava offered her the next blank surface.
"Tell it what you know."
"There should be somebody with me."
The array preserved that sentence.
The place for the person’s name remained unfilled.
Hajin watched the baker trace the empty field without pressing her finger onto it, her face tightening when she found the same absence there that she had brought to the table.
"It kept the uncertainty," Sava said.
"A false name would become another theft."
The woman looked at Hajin over the plate, her wet eyes holding his before she nodded and let Sava set the new account beside the damaged ledger.
Ash stood near the end of the table with the Watcher close behind him, his loose refusal link slipping toward his hand while he studied Tessa’s first finished plate.
She turned it over to show him the unused reverse.
"There is room."
He drew his family there with a blunt piece of recording chalk, giving one figure too many long arms before rubbing his thumb against his own forehead in concentration.
Hajin watched him fit another smaller face beneath the widest pair of Wings, the crooked drawing making Tessa smile before she placed the plate back in the frame.
The new marks stayed with the recipe on its other side.
Sava reached for another blank plate, a tear falling from her face onto its empty surface before she could turn away from the table.
She wiped it with the edge of her sleeve.
"I hate blank things today."
Hajin looked at the baker’s unfinished account beside her.
"Keep that one blank until we know."
Sava nodded without smiling, her hands returning to the recording work while the next family came forward with what it could still remember.
The array joined the Hearth in the civic register as the second major apparatus, its new task entered beside the continuing kitchen work rather than replacing it.
Tessa took her recipe back to the people making bread.
The plates stayed with Sava’s witnesses.
A fresh smear moved along the old ledger’s exposed witness connection while they worked, its withdrawing direction carrying it toward the floor rather than spreading across the written page.
Vella followed the residue through the physical connection at the table’s base, keeping her violet touch on the trace while Sava marked where its movement entered the municipal record line.
Hajin watched the direction settle on the local map.
It went down beneath the central engine.
Cessy and Lucan stood close enough to inspect the exposed return marks without reaching into that route, their burned hands kept clear while Sava copied the sign for the next examination.
"We will need to read the descent," Lucan said.
Hajin looked toward the waiting families before closing the public purchase view, leaving the final forty thousand nine hundred thirty-five balance with the completed receipt.
The investigation had a direction.
The people still needed somewhere to stand while it was followed.
By evening the new testimony plates were being carried into guarded storage, the witnesses keeping uncertain spaces open beside every name somebody could still give them.
The three hearts continued under the maintenance crews Ferra had arranged, their repaired rhythm leaving room for the quieter sounds of food arriving and tired people being brought to bed.
Eirwen’s attendants closed her living road to further crossing, marking barriers around the spent, damaged roots while she finally came away from the border holding her aching arm.
Hajin found her outside the room they had been given, her bow put safely aside and the empty soil pouch resting in one hand beside the child’s little pebble.
"Husband."
He stopped in front of her.
The word had become familiar enough to hurt differently when she said it with that much weariness underneath.
"I am here."
"Then come inside."
He ended the Stream before following her through the first guarded door, the outer watch remaining beyond the second while she put the empty pouch on the little table beside the bed.
The room smelled of washed cloth.
Hajin sat where she pointed, letting her take the chair closest to his knee before she reached for the wrist carrying the root he had kept beneath Juna’s cord.
She touched its rough end with one finger.
"You kept it."
"It complained when I moved."
"Useful company for you."
He laughed softly while she eased the root free, the little piece lying between their hands with dirt still caught along its torn edge.
He had questions about the damage left along the emptied road.
She had the kind of face that deserved an evening with something else in it first.
"What do you want now?"
Eirwen moved her chair closer until her knee touched his, her eyes staying on him while she answered without the border between them.
"A little time that does not belong to a report."
He leaned toward her carefully, their kiss quiet enough for him to hear the breath she released when his fingertips settled gently against her cheek.
They stayed close after their mouths parted.
Eirwen kissed him again before he could lean away.
"I promised Vella the watch when she sleeps," he said later, his forehead resting near Eirwen’s while the room grew darker around them.
"Wake me before you go."
He nodded against her hand.
They had the hours before that promise came due, taking them slowly while the two doors remained closed and the names they still knew stayed between them.
Eirwen rested her forehead against his shoulder after a while, her weight drawing him back into the chair until its old joints complained beneath them.
"That sounded expensive," he murmured.
"Then stop moving."
He managed that for several quiet breaths, her fingers resting loosely against his sleeve while the last light left the window.
When they finally moved to the bed, she took the side nearest the little table and put the root beside her empty pouch before reaching back for him.
Hajin lay close enough to feel her breathing settle, his sore hand resting where she had placed it over the blanket.
For once, falling quiet came more easily than finding something to say.
Eirwen fell asleep against him.
When he rose after midnight, Eirwen woke at his touch and kissed his fingers before letting him take his sore hand back.
The Watcher was still beside the marked Concord route when Hajin passed its guarded opening, the little toy visible in the empty embryo cradle beyond her shoulder.
The relief watch had changed around her.
She had stayed with the absence.
Hajin sat beside her for a moment without offering a better meaning for it, leaving only when she gave him a small nod toward the healer’s room.
Vella slept with one hand outside the blanket when he reached the chair waiting beside her, her fingers tightening at something inside the foreign memories she had agreed to hold.
He took the watch he had promised.
On the table beside that chair, Sava’s marked copy still pointed beneath the central engine, the preserved uncertainty waiting with them for morning.
