All My Summons Become Divine Girls
Chapter 574: The Wrong Seat
Juna heard the cradle warning reach the north access before the first restraint came out of the floor, its white edge sliding beneath the service ledge where Ash stood beside his mother.
The new guard turned toward it.
He was already too late.
The line closed around Ash’s middle before the Watcher’s hand could reach its forming end, the pull taking him clear of the ledge toward the central cradle beyond it.
His blanket caught against the edge for one instant, then slipped free into the Watcher’s reaching hand while the child remained caught above the opening.
Juna moved before his frightened cry had finished.
She passed the near barrier with her four Wings held clear, landing on the cradle approach as the first restraint drew Ash toward the seat waiting beneath him.
A second band rose along his shoulder.
The Watcher reached it from the service ledge, forcing her hands into the widening sides before it could tighten across his chest.
She held them apart with a sound that made Juna’s skin go cold, the fresh burns on her palms opening against the pressure while Ash hung above the cradle.
"Mother."
The word was small inside all that machinery.
Juna brought her blade up at the nearest seam, stopping its edge when the first restraint’s pull tightened through Ash’s body instead of separating cleanly from the line around him.
Below his feet, the seat began shaping itself for the child it had already taken.
[ Protective installation: Seating pending ]
Hajin came from the clinic with five Rings active over his right arm, his bandaged hands opening as he saw the white restraint between the Watcher’s burning palms.
Juna caught his eye from the opposite edge.
The cradle wanted the adults looking at the seat as if its shape had settled anything, the pale curve beneath Ash waiting with an ugly kind of patience.
His feet had not touched it.
A witness reached the public record stand beside the approach, pulling Lana’s signed command from the expedition’s previously delivered copies while Sava pushed the waiting slate into place.
Juna recognized the Sixth’s witness seal at the bottom of the page, its familiar mark suddenly more welcome than the cradle’s white promise beneath Ash.
The witness read the existing command aloud.
"Taking a living subject without their agreement is kidnapping, any protective claim must be entered as disputed while the subject remains restrained."
His voice shook on the last word.
Sava kept the record steady beneath it, her Quiet Ink stamp striking beside the copied command before the machinery could close its waiting line over Ash’s unanswered silence.
[ Custody Act: Kidnapping ]
The protective-installation row split across its middle.
Its shape failed where the custody act entered, the cradle’s claim losing the neat boundary it had been drawing around the child in its restraints.
The white bands remained.
Juna could still see the Watcher’s hands shaking against the second one, her whole body set beneath the effort that kept Ash’s breath from being squeezed out with it.
Didi’s voice came along the open approach from the frost shelters, rougher than it had sounded beside the bench.
"Hold the classification, it will not release him by itself."
Sava pressed the stamp down again on the record’s completed edge, fixing the custody act where the written account of the taking could remain beside the living witness.
Tessa rang the oven bell once from the nearby street.
The sound cut through the machinery with an ordinary force Juna felt in her teeth, its single clear note drawing eyes toward the recorded kidnapping instead of the cradle’s broken claim.
Ash twisted enough to see Hajin over the first restraint, his small hands reaching toward the white line around his middle without finding a place to pull it loose.
"Daddy."
Hajin stepped closer to the opening.
His face had gone still in a way Juna knew too well, the next breath beginning to shape a refusal large enough to drown out anything the child might try to say.
"Ash, tell it..."
Juna caught the beginning of the words with her own voice.
"Reach him through a choice, not through your voice speaking over his."
Hajin stopped.
The interruption hurt to watch while Ash was hanging there, the space after it filled by the sound of the Watcher holding a band that wanted to close through her hands.
Juna kept her eyes on him anyway.
She had seen what the white seat was doing with a child who had not yet answered, her own fear wanting an adult’s louder answer just as badly as his did.
Ash’s small fingers tightened on the first restraint.
A pale curve appeared around him for an instant, its incomplete orbit catching against the cradle’s pull before the pressure could seat him beneath it.
The provisional Ringlet held the downward movement.
Ferra’s watch ticked beside the record stand as the smith marked the interval, the small light already failing before its first full second could arrive.
Juna used that pause to lower herself at the near edge, bringing her face into the child’s sight instead of looming over the answer he had not given.
The Ringlet collapsed before she spoke, its brief resistance leaving his body shaking against the white band that the Watcher continued holding apart.
"Ash, can you hear me?"
His eyes found hers through the place its light had been.
"Less than a second," Ferra called.
Hajin kept his voice lower when he spoke again, his hand reaching only as far as the clear space beside Juna instead of closing over the child’s grip.
"What do you want to do?"
Ash opened his mouth.
A third restraint began growing from the cradle before his answer came, its narrow edge taking a different path from the first two bands around his body.
Juna followed that new movement toward the public record.
It was reaching across the line between the witness stand and the cradle, the white strip finding the path where Lana’s copied command had broken its protective claim.
She shifted her blade into that approach without bringing the edge near Ash, keeping the forming band in sight while Sava drew the completed slate closer to her body.
The witness stayed beside the record with Lana’s page held in both hands, his mouth tightening as the third restraint crawled toward the route carrying his spoken account.
Sava’s Quiet Ink mark remained beneath his fingers.
The witness’s thumb had gone white against the edge of Lana’s page, the thin paper trembling while he tried to keep its signed lower corner visible.
Sava pushed a wedge under the rocking record stand with her foot, steadying the surface before she pressed the copied account flat against it.
Juna watched the movement from the cradle edge, grateful for hands that could still manage something as small as a slipping page while her own wanted only to reach Ash.
Didi held the kidnapping classification through another shake of the machinery, her voice carrying the completed words down the same approach that had brought the first warning.
A runner repeated Juna’s instruction toward the doors where people were gathering, telling them to leave room for the child’s own answer instead of shouting one over him.
The noise around the cradle changed.
Juna could still hear frightened calls farther back, yet the nearest adults had stopped filling the gap in front of Ash with words he had no room to choose.
He stared down at the seat beneath his feet.
Its smooth curve looked small enough to hold a tired child comfortably, the restraint around him making that ordinary shape unbearable to watch.
Juna stayed at his height as well as the opening allowed, her knees pressed against the approach while her blade held the third band’s forming edge away from the record path.
Hajin remained beside her with his hand open.
The Watcher’s breath came hard behind Ash’s shoulder, her burned palms still keeping the second restraint from deciding how much room the child would have to breathe.
The custody row stayed visible above the broken protective claim, the word kidnapping held in the same public account as Ash’s feet hovering clear of the seat.
At nine minutes twenty seconds, the third restraint was still forming toward the record, Ash held above the cradle with his answer finally given room to arrive.
