All My Summons Become Divine Girls
Chapter 514: Sovereign Brand
The baker’s street had been Tessa Varn’s territory for eleven days, which meant it had been free territory for eleven days, held by silence and bread.
The compulsory layer arrived there in the second wave, and it came specifically for the street that would not agree.
Four hundred occupied citizens turned onto the baker’s street in formation. At their head, the pattern placed Tessa’s own neighbors, the people whose bread she had fed through two winters.
The design of it was cruelty with a filing system.
The network did not send soldiers to the dissenters of this street. It sent their own families instead, holding whatever the pattern had put into their hands.
Tessa stood at her oven door with flour on her forearms and did not run, because running had never once occurred to her in eleven days.
"Get behind the ovens, all of you," she said to the twenty dissenters sheltering in her bake house. "This is my street, and I have wanted to say that sentence my whole life."
The shield that arrived before the pattern’s front rank was not Tessa’s.
Didi crossed the baker’s street at a walk, unhurried, frost-blue, with the particular quiet of a princess who had decided something permanent about a bakery.
Her four established Shards opened around her in a ring, and the temperature of the street dropped the way a courtroom goes quiet when the real litigant finally stands up.
"You will not use this woman’s neighbors as her executioners."
Didi’s voice carried down the formation without ever being raised.
"Send the compulsory command forward alone. I will show you the difference between agreement and surrender."
The compulsory layer obliged, because it was a system, and systems answer direct challenges with escalation.
Every occupied body on the street inhaled on the same count. The shared command condensed out of all four hundred into a single point of pressure aimed at Didi’s ring of Shards.
[ ShadowMage44: ] the whole street’s worth of god command just got aimed at one woman, bro
[ NewViewer_02: ] is she going to hold that? that is four hundred people’s worth
Her fifth Shard opened for the second time since the seed vault, and the baker’s street learned what a Sovereign actually was.
The Shard did not attack the command it had been aimed at. It simply declared the command’s jurisdiction, ruled it foreign to the bonds it was wearing, and held the entire compulsory weight still above the ovens.
Held it, like a magistrate holding a forged deed up to the light.
"The command is borrowing this city’s own bonds to wear."
Didi’s arms spread as the weight came down onto her open palms.
"It is wearing your marriage lines, your shelter registrations, your bread contracts."
"The thing has no authority of its own to stand on. It is nothing but a squatter living inside your agreements."
Four hundred occupied faces twitched at that, because the network could not stop them from hearing it.
"I do not claim your bonds."
Frost climbed her forearms while she held the condensed command perfectly still.
"I will not rule one line of this city’s agreements. That difference is what separates me from the thing currently holding your bodies, and it is also why this hurts."
The effort was not free, because Sovereign power never is, and specificity is the entire price of it.
Blood rose through the skin of her palms where the command’s weight pressed, in thin lines that followed her lifelines exactly.
Vella arrived at Didi’s shoulder with her gold already out, and together the two of them worked the same separation they had practiced on the Reach’s braided core.
Didi held the command’s body motionless in her bleeding hands.
Vella’s gold entered along its grain, found where the compulsory threads had been stitched through the city’s genuine bonds, and unpicked them one honest thread at a time.
The baker’s street watched a healer plus a princess perform surgery on the concept of their own agreements. The whole chat stopped joking somewhere in the second minute of it.
[ LurkerNoMore: ] she is holding a district command still with her bare authority while a surgeon unpicks it from people’s actual marriages. this is the most insane thing I have ever watched
[ whitecoat_ceo: ] the blood from the palms is a real cost, not theater. note the specificity
The first freed neighbor dropped to her knees in the street, and the command’s weight on Didi’s palms lightened by one person’s share.
Then another neighbor fell free, then another after that, and every separation made Didi’s grip bleed a little less while the pattern’s formation grew smaller.
The compulsory layer read the tally before the street did. It tried to withdraw the entire command at once, taking its weight off Didi’s Shard to redistribute before losing more of the four hundred.
"Refused," Didi said, and her fifth Shard did something the stream would argue about for a week.
It branded the hanging command itself with a formal ruling. Not the people, not the bonds, only the compulsory order above the ovens, marked in frost that read as law in every language the city had.
The mark said: this instrument is foreign to these bonds, and it may not withdraw unexamined.
A command under a Sovereign’s writ could not simply walk away.
It had to be dismissed instead, and dismissal required the street’s own bonds to release their grip on the command. Every freed neighbor walking out made the command smaller, while every person still held made the dismissal heavier.
"That is how you protect people without ruling over them."
Didi’s voice had gone thin from the cost, but the frost ruling held.
"You give their own agreements the right to evict."
The street evicted its occupier over eleven minutes, one released neighbor at a time, and the last thing to leave was the mark itself.
The frost ruling dimmed, the command dissolved into so much unowned pressure, and four hundred people stood on their own feet in the wreckage of their formation.
Tessa Varn crossed her own street at a walk to match Didi’s, and took the princess’s bleeding hands in her floured ones without one word of ceremony.
"You held a god off my bakery with your hands open the whole time."
Tessa wrapped both bleeding palms with a practiced baker’s efficiency.
"In this street, that makes you one of us, and we take care of our own."
"Then I accept the jurisdiction of this street."
Didi smiled with the very last of her remaining strength.
"It is the first court I have ever entirely respected."
[ JunaFanClub: ] princess and baker alliance, the two most dangerous professions in this city
Didi’s fifth Shard closed, and she sat down on the flour-dusted step like any worker at the end of a shift.
Vella stayed at her back, monitoring the cost, releasing tension from the Sovereign pathways with a healer’s patience while the blood dried on the wrappings.
The chat’s verdict rolled in while the street swept itself, and the verdict was the single most repeated phrase in the stream’s history to that date.
"She could have taken the whole city’s bonds for herself, and instead she gave them a legal defense."
The freed neighbors began carrying bread to their own families again before the count of an hour, because the first thing a free district does is feed its children.
The pattern’s second wave had failed completely on the baker’s street. Somewhere below the seam, the God of One Voice began revising its whole approach to a family that kept refusing to be one voice.
The next revision would aim at the ones who carried buildings, and the district that held the housing blocks was already feeling the pressure arrive.
