After the End: Mari's Second Life
Chapter Twenty Seven: Salt, Blood, and Dominion (Uncensored & Intimate)
The cold, salt-laden wind hit them like a physical blow, tasting of ozone, freedom, and the endless gray sweep of the ocean crashing violently against the jagged cliffs below.
Adrian vaulted through the breached ventilation hatch, his boots hitting the slick, rain-washed rock with bone-jarring force. He didn't slow down. He carried Mari away from the dark mouth of the cave, shielding her body entirely with his massive frame as Sera and Lena spilled out onto the cliffside behind them, weapons raised and scanning the empty, churning horizon.
"Clear," Sera panted, her breath pluming into the freezing morning air. As the adrenaline began to recede into a cold, lethal hum, she stepped close, her cool fingers trailing a slow, possessive caress down Mari's cheek before resting gently on her jawline.
Adrian finally slowed his pace, kneeling carefully on a sheltered outcropping of stone out of the biting wind. He set Mari down, but his hands refused to let go. One palm stayed locked firmly around her waist, anchoring her to him, while his thumb traced heavy, branding caresses over her hip, mapping her body to ensure she was still intact, still breathing, still his.
"Are you broken anywhere else?" Adrian murmured, his voice a low, rough rumble right against her ear, his dark, feral eyes searching every inch of her face while his other hand slid up to tangle possessively in her hair, pressing her head flush against his throat.
Mari let out a long, shuddering breath, melting into the heat of his touch. Her forearms still throbbed with white-hot pain beneath the biosynthetic braces, but the electric caresses washing over her skin eclipsed it all. She looked up at him, her eyes bright and defiant. "I'm better than okay. We made it."
Lena collapsed onto a dry boulder nearby, clutching her cracked tablet to her chest with a breathless, hysterical laugh. She reached out with one trembling hand, her fingers brushing softly against Mari's knee in a tender, worshipful caress before tapping the screen to project a holographic feed into the open air between them.
"We didn't just make it. Look at the local transponder relay," Lena breathed, her eyes shining with manic devotion.
The global corporate network was in a state of absolute, unmitigated freefall. The data packet Mari had burned into the main grid had triggered a cascading system failure across every major metropolitan sector. Automated defense grids were going offline, corporate stocks were cratering into negative value, and independent resistance factions were mobilizing by the thousands across the globe.
The empire was blind, bleeding, and leaderless.
Sera closed the circle, stepping in tight beside Adrian. Her hand slid over Mari's uninjured shoulder, tracing a slow, intimate caress down her arm before tangling her fingers with Adrian's, completing the human barricade around her. A slow, triumphant, devastating smile touched Sera's lips. "They wanted to lock us away in a black site and strip us down to code. Look who's standing now."
"They're going to try and rebuild," Adrian said, his gaze shifting out toward the horizon where the first true rays of the sun were finally breaking through the heavy storm clouds, painting the steel-gray ocean in shades of blood and gold. His grip tightened, and his thumb traced another slow, possessive caress over Mari's jaw, an absolute, unbreakable vow written in the hard lines of his face. "Let them try. They don't own the sky anymore. We do."
Mari looked between them—Adrian’s unyielding strength holding her tight, Sera’s cool, worshipful caresses framing her face, and Lena’s brilliant, frantic devotion anchored against her knee. They were battered, bruised, and hunted by a dying corporate god, but as she leaned back into Adrian's arms, completely enveloped by their fierce, physical adoration, she knew the truth.
The hunt was over. The war had just begun. And they were going to burn the world down together.
