After Surviving the Apocalypse, I Built a City in Another World
Chapter 2177: The Bitter Siblings
The merchant group specialized in traders between Bleulle and the associated towns west of it, and this included Hubble, Ester, and Jacoba Town. This was led by a bald man named Bolbo.
Unlike the newly arrived group, they had been here a while with their master, and they were sent to meet Sir Laikon to give him the information they had gathered so far. Even so, they felt like they hadn’t explored everything yet.
It was unbelievable just how deep this place was. Whenever they tried to dig, they were either blocked or deeper layers were revealed. It was exhausting. In their years of experience doubling as spies for master territories, they had never struggled this much to gather information.
Of course, they also had their own agendas. Their selling information wasn’t exactly in the form of masters and servants, but rather a partnership or a commercial deal.
Rather, the more they explored, the more their will to leave was shaken.
The cost of living here was truly so affordable! Here, one just had to kill a few monsters at their level every day, and they’d be able to eat delicious food and live well!
Balbo’s group was such a group. They were, in name, selling information to a select number of Lords, but in reality, they had their own agenda. They were perfectly capable of switching sides.
Each bite of random street food was certainly pulling them closer and closer to the other side.
Two slaves, Cessie and Casso, who were holding various shopping bags that no longer fit in any space, couldn’t help but feel greedy when they looked at the food.
They looked at their master, wondering if staring at him would signal they wanted some, too.
The master caught their eyes and scoffed. "Please, have the sensibility of being slaves. You’re not the young master and young miss of a town anymore."
"You do know that your parents have yet to send money for you, right?" he added.
The siblings bit their lips. After months of hard work, they had managed to send posts to their family, telling them who owned them at the time, and they ought to send them money and rescue them.
So far, there was no response. They thought it was delayed because they went around a lot as members of a caravan, but whenever they peeked at the Post Office there was no good news. If they hadn’t known that only the addressees could take the posts, they would’ve thought someone was hiding their letters from them.
They flushed, humiliated.
They swore to put him back in his place one of these days!
They couldn’t help but remember the life they had been living the past year, most of which was under this bastard.
They lived as true slaves, especially at the start and under the masters right after the war. They did hard labor, served ugly bastards, and even served as bait when facing monster mobs.
It was only when they encountered Bolbo, this bastard, that they found a bit of hope. Even if they did not like him, he was still a familiar merchant who had plenty of business in their hometown as well. His business was particularly prominent back when Jacoba was still allied with Ester Town.
They immediately begged for him to take them back, promising a good life when they returned to their place as the princes of Jacoba town!
The siblings Cessi and Casso also always blamed others in their current horrid life and were absolutely convinced that they were undeserving victims.
One, they blamed their parents for ignoring them. How many posts do they send out? One had to remember, they were slaves, and all their wealth was taken during the war. How much could slaves save up between then and now? Not much, and a lot of that was consumed by the damned Post Office!
The result? They received no response from their father and an occasional whimsical response from their mother. After receiving similar replies over the past few times, the siblings realized that the other side wouldn’t be able to fix anything at all.
Their mother was also useless. She kept crying that she missed them, but what had she actually accomplished!?
Second, they blame the town itself for losing the war! Useless commanders, useless soldiers, useless slaves. They completely forgot that they hadn’t really contributed to that war either.
They killed weaklings wantonly, but when they encountered someone of the same level or above, or even those with lower levels but were serious threats, they would order someone else to handle them, though basically they were just running away.
One had to remember they were the children of the Lord, and their positions in the war were also commander-level. It was just that there were experienced fighters assisting them, and it was them leading some sectors in name.
They also conveniently forgot that when Jacoba was about to lose, they were the first to hide. They only blamed the soldiers and everyone for lacking the skills, not acknowledging their own incompetence, and how momentum was lowered even more with their behavior.
And most of all, they blamed Cassandra! And this was even before they heard the damned gossip that she could be alive.
Even back then, they had always blamed her for dying and ruining such a good deal.
They had always felt like the root cause of their suffering was that ruined marriage. Now, they heard rumors that she was alive, and they cursed her even more. ⅇ
Sad for them, they were slaves and had tasks. When they wanted to go and investigate, they were punished instead. Weeks later, after they finished their tasks and were allowed to go around and ask, people looked at them oddly instead.
The caravan they served had already gone back and forth to Bleuelle, but they did not leave, staying in the rental house with other staff members who facilitated procurement, which also doubled as a storage area for their caravan. The siblings thought it was their chance to go around, but those who stayed kept giving them work anyway.
Their days in Alterra were just like this, work, work, get bitter, work, and curse the world.
Not once had they reflected on their actions, but every hour, they had someone else to curse and insult.
The siblings were wallowing in bitterness, but they had no choice but to follow the master to do various labor jobs.
When will this end?! When would they recover their previous status?
When will they finally get their revenge!?
At this point, they had no idea that their unrepentant attitudes would just pull them deeper and deeper into the mire.
