After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret
Chapter 566: Clash of Superpowers
Eric Stone was the captain of the security team. Since she had other matters to attend to at the scene, she exchanged a few brief words with Nina Jacobs before leaving first.
Nina couldn’t see Leo Hale and the others, so she found some empty seats and sat down with Walsh and Wayne Warner.
“Who is that?” she asked Walsh casually. It wasn’t because she was curious, but rather because the man had been taking his curtain call for a full five minutes and still hadn’t left the stage.
“I have no idea.” Walsh also looked bewildered. After all, he was just a cook.
“Are you guys new here? You don’t even know Julian Wells?
“He’s the public enemy of all the men in our base, and of course, the one we envy the most.” A man wearing a cotton beanie sitting next to them seemed to have overheard their conversation and couldn’t help but explain.
“The Crimson Rose Squad?” Nina had genuinely never heard of such a squad in the base. And apparently, all the members of this squad were women, with the exception of their captain, Julian Wells. No wonder the beanie-wearing man’s tone was full of envy and jealousy when he talked about him.
“Looks like you guys really are new.
“My name is Mason Quincy. Let me tell you, the members of this squad are all gorgeous women. This guy Julian only recruits women…” Mason chattered on endlessly.
Nina just listened to it for amusement. Julian, who had been taking his curtain call for ages, finally stepped down, and the next few matches immediately began.
She noticed that this selection tournament was completely different from regular competitions. The Superpower Users on both sides stood outside the red lines, engaging solely in a contest of Superpowers. Two different Superpowers collided and clashed in the center of the arena. The Superpower Users only needed to control their Superpowers without physically engaging in the fight.
Although this kind of match was somewhat unfair to Enhancement Element Superpower Users, such as those with Strength Element and Speed Element Superpowers, Nina could completely understand the reasoning behind it.
Drakonia was selecting outstanding Superpower Users this time not only to determine the final candidates for the combat power rankings but, most importantly, to prepare for war. It wouldn’t be a war between humans, but a war between humans and massive hordes of zombies.
This kind of warfare often required large-scale, area-of-effect skills. No one would have the heart to let Strength Element and Speed Element Superpower Users engage in hand-to-hand combat with a zombie horde.
The Superpower Users did their utmost to showcase their Superpowers. Coupled with Mason’s ongoing commentary, Walsh and Wayne also watched with great relish.
Nina noticed a Water Element Superpower User in the arena whose Superpower was quite spectacular. However, after winning, he seemed to continuously bow and apologize to his opponent.
“That’s Alister Keller. He’s a Water and Wood Dual Element user. He’s a freelancer without a squad—or more accurately, no one gets along with him,” Mason said.
“He seems to have a pretty good personality to me,” Nina remarked. He even apologized after winning. How modest.
Mason retorted, “If someone who beat you came over to apologize, wouldn’t you find it weird? That’s just outright humiliation, okay!”
Someone who had beaten her?
Nina pondered for a moment. This hypothetical scenario didn’t seem plausible for her.
A whistle blew, signaling halftime.
Nina originally wanted to look around to see if anyone from her own squad was present, but she unexpectedly caught sight of Liam Grant. He was seated on the tier below her, positioned diagonally across from her.
Just as she was about to look away, she felt that Liam was acting somewhat strangely. He glanced left and right, his brows tightly furrowed, and constantly switched seats as if he were trying to avoid something.
Nina observed for another moment before Liam got up and walked in another direction.
“Behind him…” Because she was facing him, Nina noticed the oddity. Two people seemed to be tailing Liam, even as he left.
“Wait for me here. I’ll be right back,” Nina said to Wayne and Walsh.
“Go ahead. I’ll save your seat for you,” Walsh replied.
Nina walked down to the lower tier, but she couldn’t find any trace of Liam. When she walked back to her seat in disappointment, she found the atmosphere there a bit peculiar.
A group of people was standing next to Walsh, speaking to him in an unfriendly tone.
“…I won’t. I told you, someone else is sitting here.” Walsh kept one hand pressed firmly on the seat Nina had just vacated.
“Do you know who we are?
“Vacate these seats for us right this instant!” a man demanded, pointing at Walsh.
Walsh wasn’t afraid, because Wayne was sitting right next to him. Even though Wayne didn’t say a single word, his presence gave Walsh confidence. So he rolled his eyes at the man and said, “Why should I care who you are?”
He didn’t know these people at all.
“You f*cking…” The man was about to get physical but was held back by his companion.
“Mr. Miller, the security team is here. It’s that female captain, Eric Stone,” the companion warned, pointing at the approaching security team.
The base’s security team maintained strict order. In crowded areas, it usually took no more than three minutes for the security team to show up if a commotion occurred. That Eric Stone, in particular, was not someone to be trifled with.
“Fine. You just wait until the match is over. I’ll remember you.” Michael Miller pointed at Walsh, his expression quite furious.
Watching the group of people leave, Walsh didn’t take the matter to heart.
Mason, who had long since gotten up to give up his seat, hurriedly sat back down once those people left. He looked at Walsh sympathetically and said, “You’re done for, provoking those guys.”
“Who were those people just now?” As the crowd dispersed, Nina walked back. Seeing her, Walsh immediately moved his hand to let Nina take her saved seat.
“I don’t know. They came up and told us to vacate the seats, claiming the seats belonged to them,” Walsh answered.
Aside from him and Wayne, everyone else in the entire row had voluntarily given up their seats.
“That guy is Michael Miller. Anyone who offends him ends up getting tormented ruthlessly behind the scenes.
“You two had better leave right now. Otherwise, they’ll definitely block the exit and wait for you after the event is over,” Mason urged, convinced that these three were all newcomers to the base, seeing as they didn’t even recognize that gang.
Michael belonged to the Superpower User squad, Cloud Piercer. It was an emerging squad. As the vice-captain, Michael was said to have already reached Intermediate Fire Element. His Superpower was formidable, and his physical combat skills were quite good. If anyone accidentally offended him, he wouldn’t make a fuss openly, but behind their backs, he would usually torment them to death.
They would corner and beat people in various streets and alleys; they wouldn’t even spare them in the base’s cafeteria or restrooms.
“I heard that quite a few people were tormented so badly by them that they had no choice but to leave the base. There were even some who couldn’t handle the pressure and just…” Mason explained in a low voice.
“In this selection tournament, Michael has already entered the final stage. I heard it’s highly likely he’ll be selected.
“The members of Cloud Piercer all follow his lead, so I’m afraid they won’t let you off easily.
“Why don’t you guys hurry up and leave while you still can!” he urged with a complicated expression.
Perhaps as long as Walsh hid for a while and wasn’t found by them, Michael would forget about this matter. If Michael was selected and went to City A, then they would have absolutely nothing to worry about anymore.
“So that’s how it is.” Nina’s attention had already been captivated by the Superpower match in the arena. “It looks like Caleb Carter should be able to enter the final selection.”
Like Walsh, Nina didn’t take this matter to heart at all.
“He’s that powerful, huh.” It was Walsh’s first time seeing such a Gold Element Superpower.
Seeing this, Mason shook his head. It seemed these two still didn’t realize the severity of offending that gang.
