Chapter 75: Chapter 75: I’m Being Followed

At a corner coffee shop.

I sat in the corner, wearing a baseball cap, waiting for Madeline Quinn to arrive.

So far, Madeline Quinn was the only one I could trust.

I didn’t dare fully trust anyone but her.

"You wanted to see me?" Madeline Quinn arrived and sat down in front of me, clearly in a bad mood.

She was clearly in a foul mood.

"I saw the news online. It said the killer won’t stop, that he’ll keep killing. That means he’s bound to have another target." I glanced around nervously. "I know who the killer is, but I don’t have any proof..."

Madeline Quinn stared at me suspiciously. "You know who the killer is?"

"That person is living at Cecilia Caldwell’s house right now..." I was afraid Madeline wouldn’t believe me.

Madeline stared at me in disbelief. "Are you crazy?"

I scrubbed at my face and took a deep breath. "Just trust me this once. It’s true. Get Zeke Shaw to keep a close eye on that person... He’s definitely going to make a move again."

Madeline eyed me doubtfully. "I was just at Cecilia’s house yesterday. How come I didn’t see any killer?"

"Don’t go there anymore. The killer is hiding inside; you just don’t know it." I looked at Madeline anxiously, terrified something would happen to her.

Madeline remained vigilant, not trusting me completely. "How do you know all this? Who are you, really?"

"You wouldn’t believe me if I told you. If I said I was Cecilia Caldwell... you wouldn’t believe that either." I sighed. "Anyway, I don’t have any other motive. I just want to uncover the truth, set the record straight, and bring the killer to justice."

’I want to protect Madeline Quinn. I don’t want to see her get hurt.’

Madeline looked at me like I was insane. After a long moment, she spoke. "Are you sure you’re mentally okay?"

I was getting a little angry, but I could understand from her perspective.

It would be shocking and terrifying for a stranger to suddenly appear and claim to be your recently deceased loved one.

"Whether you believe me or not, just give Zeke Shaw this lead. Have his people stake out Cecilia Caldwell’s house. It’s a fact that someone is secretly living there," I said anxiously.

"I get it. I’ll look into it. But if you’re messing with me, I won’t let you off the hook." Madeline agreed.

I let out a sigh of relief. "Okay, I’m counting on you. I really don’t want to see anyone else get hurt."

Madeline slumped back in her chair, dejected. "This killer is just too smart. They’ve been investigating for so long with no leads. It’s like he’s a ghost."

I lowered my head, defeated as well. "Yeah, he’s terrifying. He’s killed so many people..."

’Even I, someone who’s already died once, can’t do anything about him.’

’It’s like he doesn’t leave a single trace.’

"But I don’t believe in the perfect crime," Madeline said, shaking her head.

I shook my head too. "Neither do I."

"If you really want to help me catch the killer, then I thank you. But if you have any other ideas, I won’t let you off easy," Madeline warned in a low voice.

"In any case, don’t tell anyone what I’ve told you. As for the police, only tell Zeke Shaw. The fewer people who know about this, the better. We can’t risk tipping him off." I was worried the killer would catch wind of it.

Madeline nodded.

I breathed a sigh of relief and glanced at the time.

’Asher has been holed up in his room for the past few days. I have no idea what he’s doing, but I’m almost certain now that he has some kind of connection to the killer. He’s refusing to give him up.’

’The Lancaster Group is in the eye of the storm right now. With Master Lancaster and his son controlling the company, it’ll be hard for me to get a foothold.’

’The Lynn Family managed to get Noelle Lynch a position in the Lancaster Group. I don’t have the power to get anyone in there myself, and it’s just as hard to find someone to make trouble for her, since I have no connections with anyone inside the company.’

’I’m really beset by troubles both inside and out.’

"Aren’t you going home?" Madeline asked as she was leaving.

"Not yet. I have a class reunion today." I sighed. ’I don’t even know these people. Pretending to be Silvia Lynch at a class reunion... so boring.’

’But those classmates are guilt-tripping me, and as ’Silvia Lynch,’ I can’t just not go.’

’I have to get used to this identity as Silvia Lynch as quickly as possible, or else... if anyone notices something’s off, it’ll be a huge hassle.’

"I’m leaving then." Madeline got up to go, but she ordered a cappuccino for me before she left.

I took a sip, frowned, and spoke without thinking. "It’s not like you don’t know I don’t drink anything this sweet. How many packets of sugar did you put in this?"

Madeline glanced at me, said nothing, and left.

I sat in the corner, resting my chin on my hand, and watched the endless stream of cars and pedestrians outside the floor-to-ceiling window.

’It’s good... to be alive.’

’I can still feel the sunlight, and I can still taste the food of this world.’

BUZZ. My phone vibrated. It was that classmate again.

"Silvia, everyone’s bringing their plus-ones today. Since you’re married, you have to bring your husband. Otherwise, we might not let you in." On the other end of the line, a few people were laughing.

’They’re clearly trying to make a fool out of me.’

’They know perfectly well I married the fool of the Lancaster family, yet they’re still deliberately telling me to bring him. They obviously want to laugh at me and Sebastian Lancaster in front of everyone.’

"My husband isn’t feeling well, so he—" Before I could finish, they hung up.

I was getting angry. ’The nerve of them.’

But their attitude toward Silvia Lynch made it clear that they had absolutely no respect for her.

This Silvia was a very timid person. Perhaps because she’d lived in the countryside for too long, she felt somewhat insecure after suddenly being thrown into a prestigious school where all her classmates were either rich or powerful.

She only transferred into this class in her senior year of high school. Logically, I could just skip this so-called reunion.

But according to Silvia’s memories, the only person who was kind to her during her loneliest and most helpless time was her senior year homeroom teacher.

Now they were saying that teacher has cancer. I wanted to go see him, for Silvia’s sake.

Sighing, I stood up, pulled my cap down low, and headed out.

Ever since Master Lancaster came to the Lancaster Family estate to cause trouble, I always feel unsafe walking on the streets alone.

Since my rebirth, my sixth sense seems to be much stronger than before.

After a few steps, I stopped and glanced back. Sure enough, a person in black quickly ducked into an alley.

’Heh, a real bloodhound.’

I turned around, took a few steps back, and quickly ducked into an alley myself.

The man came out, couldn’t find me, and panicked for a moment before running forward.

I watched him from the shadows. When he entered the alley, I grabbed a nearby club and brought it down on his head.

The man collapsed to the ground, staring at me in astonishment. "Why did you hit me?"

I gripped the club nervously. "Why... why were you following me!"

"Assistant Foster told me to follow and protect you!" the man said, clutching his head and grimacing in pain.

I rubbed my temples, my head aching. "Sorry, I thought you were some kind of creep..."

The man rubbed his head and stood up, wincing. "You need to be careful lately. A lot of people have their eyes on you."

I nodded. "I’m so sorry. You should go to the hospital... get Assistant Foster to reimburse you. I have a class reunion, so I have to go."
