Chapter 41: Chapter 41: How Pathetic to Fall in Love with Such a Person

’What was more important? Cecilia Caldwell’s life, or Erin Whittaker’s feelings?’

Julian Fletcher clenched his fists, silent for a long time before finally speaking. "I’ll go up and talk to her. But this has nothing to do with her. She has no obligation..."

He was still protecting Erin Whittaker.

’Nothing to do with her?’ I was so furious with Julian Fletcher that I had to laugh. ’You still say it has nothing to do with her! She’s the one who lured me over there! She’s the one who fed me to a murderer!’

I screamed at Julian Fletcher, but he couldn’t hear me at all.

He never listened to me when I was alive, let alone now that I’m dead.

"Cecilia... falling in love with a man like that... how tragic." Once Julian Fletcher had left, Zeke Shaw muttered to himself.

’He’s right. Falling in love with a man like that is just too tragic.’

’Everyone could see what a tragic person I was.’

’Ever loving him became my biggest regret.’

Over this time, though, my heart has slowly grown numb.

It doesn’t hurt as much as it used to.

Who says love doesn’t fade? It does.

When you’ve had your fill of disappointment and despair, it naturally fades away.

If it still doesn’t fade, you’re just a glutton for punishment.

I loved Julian Fletcher, and it cost me my life. What was left to love?

Julian Fletcher went to Erin Whittaker’s room and came out a short while later.

He shook his head at Zeke Shaw. "Sorry, Erin is very unstable right now..."

"Julian Fletcher, let me talk to her. A life is on the line. Every moment we delay..." Zeke Shaw said, a sense of urgency in his voice.

But he also knew he had no standing to press the issue. Legally, Erin Whittaker had no obligation to cooperate.

But Zeke Shaw knew for a fact that Erin Whittaker had something to do with what happened to Cecilia Caldwell.

"Sorry, I can’t let you upset her any further." Julian Fletcher was still determined to protect Erin Whittaker.

Zeke Shaw frowned. "Are you aware that Erin Whittaker called Cecilia Caldwell three hours before the incident?"

Zeke Shaw hadn’t originally planned to say this. After all, the case wasn’t solved, and he couldn’t make baseless speculations.

Julian Fletcher frowned, looking at Zeke Shaw. "What do you mean, Officer Lowell?"

"An unknown number called Cecilia three hours before the incident. Since she hadn’t saved the contact, we didn’t pay it much mind during our initial screening. But yesterday, I had my team run the number. It belongs to a close friend of Erin Whittaker’s. We questioned her, and she said Erin borrowed her phone. The friend claims she never called Cecilia, which means it was probably Erin."

"You said it yourself—’probably’!" Julian Fletcher was desperately trying to hide something, or maybe he was afraid of something.

Watching Julian Fletcher bury his head in the sand like that, I smiled. ’It was her...’

"I’ve tasked the tech department with recovering the call recordings from Cecilia’s phone. The process is still ongoing, but once they’re restored, the truth should come to light," Zeke Shaw said calmly. "I, for one, am glad Cecilia had at least that much foresight."

I took a deep breath. ’The moment I realized Erin Whittaker was calling, I started recording. I didn’t trust her. I also wanted to have proof that I was repaying the debt I owed Julian Fletcher.’

’I just never imagined it would one day become a crucial piece of evidence revealing the truth of my death.’

Julian Fletcher frowned at Zeke Shaw. "Then you shouldn’t be making wild speculations before the evidence is out!"

"Whether or not I’m just speculating is something you know perfectly well in your heart. Why was Cecilia Caldwell also there on the 15th, completely unbeknownst to any of you? You really don’t find that suspicious? Or strange?"
