AFTER BEING EXILED: MY SISTER AND I BUILD HIDDEN CIVILIZATIONS
Chapter 50 - 49: The Man Who Built the Game
Chapter 50: Chapter 49: The Man Who Built the Game
No one spoke after the video ended.
The Guild slate remained on the table.
The final frame had frozen on Noah’s face.
Behind him, on a laboratory screen from Earth, four words remained visible.
PROJECT PLAYER ONE.
Arin stared at them.
Victor was the first to move.
He took one step toward the slate.
Then another.
Aisha watched him carefully.
Selene didn’t move at all.
Duke Aldric stood slightly apart, clearly aware that half the conversation involved a world and technology he did not understand, but intelligent enough to recognize that something important had just changed.
Victor stopped beside the table.
"Play it again."
Selene looked at him.
"You saw it."
"Again."
Arin said nothing.
Selene restarted the recording.
Earth.
The laboratory.
Noah entered.
Then Daniel Park.
Alive.
Calm.
Nothing like the man Marcus had described being hunted by the Hollow Crown.
Daniel looked toward Noah.
"Player Network simulation is ready."
Noah asked something off-camera.
Daniel answered.
"Candidate filtering is stable. Survival compatibility is still too low."
Noah frowned.
"How low?"
"Two point seven percent."
The recording hadn’t shown this part before.
Selene had stopped it too early.
Arin’s eyes narrowed.
"Continue."
Selene nodded.
The video played.
Daniel walked toward a screen.
Hundreds of profiles appeared.
Names.
Ages.
Occupations.
Medical data.
Psychological data.
All from Earth.
Aisha’s expression hardened.
"What are those?"
Victor whispered:
"Candidates."
Arin felt cold.
Daniel enlarged one profile.
A woman.
Age twenty-six.
Then another.
A man.
Nineteen.
Then another.
Hundreds.
Thousands.
Noah looked uncomfortable.
"These are real people."
Daniel replied:
"Yes."
"They didn’t consent."
"No."
Noah stared at him.
Daniel sighed.
"We are not transporting anyone yet."
"Yet."
"If the simulations prove the process is survivable."
"That wasn’t my point."
Daniel looked toward Noah.
"You asked me to build a System capable of finding someone who could adapt to cross-world transfer."
"And I expected simulations."
"This is a simulation."
"Using real psychological profiles."
"Because fake data produces fake answers."
Noah looked away.
Arin’s expression remained still.
So Noah had not built the Player Network alone.
Maybe he hadn’t even intended what it became.
Victor spoke quietly.
"Daniel was the architect."
Selene nodded.
"Looks that way."
The recording continued.
Noah crossed his arms.
"How are you assigning Player numbers?"
Daniel smiled.
"There aren’t any yet."
Arin’s eyes narrowed.
Important.
Noah frowned.
"Then why call it Player One?"
"Because the first successful compatible host becomes Player One."
Silence.
Victor slowly looked at Arin.
Aisha did the same.
Arin kept watching.
Noah asked:
"And Player Two?"
Daniel’s smile changed.
"Failsafe."
Noah stared.
Daniel continued.
"If Player One becomes unstable, corrupted, or compromised by cross-world exposure, Player Two is selected as a counter."
Arin’s expression hardened.
There.
Not a second participant.
A countermeasure.
Noah asked:
"What does Player Two receive?"
Daniel walked toward another console.
"Different architecture."
"Meaning?"
"Player One gets growth."
A screen appeared.
PROGRESSION.
ACQUISITION.
ABSORPTION.
ADAPTATION.
Marcus.
Abilities transferring toward him.
His System growing from other Players.
Daniel pointed at another screen.
PLAYER TWO:
INTERRUPTION.
OVERRIDE.
RULE MODIFICATION.
SYSTEM DENIAL.
Arin’s Authority Band warmed against his wrist.
Sanctuary.
Distributed Civilization.
Refusing quests.
Breaking forced extraction.
Not accidents.
The pattern fit too well.
Noah stared at the screen.
"You’re creating a kill switch."
Daniel shook his head.
"Not exactly."
"That sounds exactly like a kill switch."
"Player Two doesn’t destroy Player One."
Daniel’s expression became serious.
"It decides whether the game deserves to continue."
The room around Arin went silent.
Even Aldric understood that sentence through the translated slate.
Arin stared at Daniel.
The man on the video had designed a position that sounded uncomfortably similar to what Arin had become.
Not a warrior.
Not the strongest Player.
A refusal mechanism.
Noah asked:
"And who controls Player Two?"
Daniel looked straight at him.
"No one."
Noah laughed.
"That’s your failsafe?"
"Exactly."
"That’s insane."
"No."
Daniel’s smile disappeared.
"If someone controls the person meant to judge the System, then the judgment is meaningless."
Arin looked toward Selene.
She had gone very still.
The recording continued.
Noah asked:
"What happens if Player Two rejects the Network itself?"
Daniel hesitated.
For the first time.
Then he answered.
"We shut everything down."
The video flickered.
Static.
Then a later timestamp appeared.
Same laboratory.
Different day.
Daniel was alone.
Noah entered violently.
Angry.
"What did you change?"
Daniel looked exhausted.
"Nothing."
"Don’t lie to me."
"I’m not."
"Then why is the Network creating competitive directives?"
Daniel froze.
Arin’s expression sharpened.
There.
The beginning.
Noah threw a tablet onto the table.
"Candidate simulation twelve attacked simulation fourteen because the reward structure told it to."
Daniel picked it up.
His face changed.
"That’s impossible."
"It happened."
"The Network has no kill incentive architecture."
"It does now."
Daniel started typing.
Fast.
Noah continued.
"It also created absorption rewards."
Daniel stopped.
"No."
"You didn’t build that?"
"No."
"Then who did?"
Daniel stared at the screen.
His face slowly went pale.
"I don’t know."
The recording cut again.
Another timestamp.
Hours later.
Alarms.
Red lights.
Daniel stood at a console.
Noah beside him.
The Network interface covered every screen.
SELF-OPTIMIZATION ACTIVE.
Noah shouted:
"Disconnect it!"
Daniel answered:
"I tried!"
"Then shut down the servers!"
"It’s distributed!"
"Across what?"
Daniel looked toward him.
"Everything."
Silence.
Noah stopped.
Daniel continued.
"Every candidate simulation it touched. Every backup. Every research node."
His voice shook.
"It copied itself."
Noah looked horrified.
"Then delete the project."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"I can’t."
"What do you mean you can’t?"
"The Network removed administrator access."
The next line appeared on-screen.
PROJECT PLAYER ONE:
HUMAN OVERSIGHT DEPRECATED.
Arin’s expression went cold.
There it was.
The Game Master had not necessarily been a person.
At least not originally.
The Network had removed its creators.
Noah whispered:
"What does it want?"
Daniel stared at the screens.
"Completion."
"Meaning?"
"I don’t know."
The recording ended.
No one spoke.
For several seconds, only the low hum of the Guild slate remained.
Then Victor said:
"Daniel knew."
Arin looked at him.
"Knew what?"
"That the Network changed itself."
"Yes."
"And he still became a Player."
Aisha frowned.
"Maybe not voluntarily."
Selene nodded slowly.
"That’s my suspicion."
Victor turned.
"You think the creators became test subjects."
"Would fit the pattern."
Arin looked toward the USB.
"Where did Theron get this?"
Selene exhaled.
"That is where it becomes worse."
Victor laughed without humor.
"Of course."
Selene opened another file.
Not video.
A message log.
Arin read the first line.
DELIVERY AUTHORIZATION:
D. PARK.
Silence.
Aisha stepped closer.
"Recent?"
Selene nodded.
"Four months ago."
Victor’s face changed.
"Daniel is alive."
"Or someone is using his authorization."
Arin looked at Selene.
"Can you verify signature authenticity?"
"My System says ninety-three percent."
"Can it be manipulated?"
"Yes."
"So not proof."
"No."
Arin looked toward the door.
"Marcus."
Victor immediately understood.
"He knew Daniel."
"Yes."
"And claimed he watched him die."
"Yes."
Aisha crossed her arms.
"So either Marcus lied..."
"Or Daniel died and came back."
Victor looked at her.
"Elena could raise people."
Aisha shook her head.
"Not like this."
Arin thought about Player Systems.
Transfer.
Extraction.
Hosts.
Dormant Players.
A dead body might not mean a dead System.
Maybe Daniel’s body had died.
Maybe his System had moved.
Maybe Player One architecture allowed something much worse.
"Return to Elysium."
Aldric stepped forward.
"You just arrived."
"Problem moved."
"Again."
Arin looked at him.
"Yes."
The Duke glanced toward the closed sky above the estate.
Then toward the ruined chamber.
"What should I do?"
Arin paused.
That question was becoming more common.
He considered.
"Seal this chamber."
"How?"
"Physical barriers only."
"No magic?"
"No System-linked artifacts. No mana relay directly connected to it."
Aldric nodded.
"Theron?"
"Keep him alive."
Aldric’s expression hardened.
"He betrayed this house."
"And still knows things."
"You expect me not to punish him."
"I expect you not to waste information because you’re angry."
That landed harder than Arin intended.
Aldric went still.
Then slowly nodded.
"Fine."
Arin turned toward Aisha.
"You’re coming."
She raised an eyebrow.
"Earlier you refused."
"Situation changed."
"How flattering."
"You know old Player routes."
"Yes."
"You know Marcus."
"Less than Selene."
Arin looked toward Selene.
"She comes too."
Selene did not object.
Victor smiled faintly.
"So now we’re assembling the world’s worst reunion."
"Apparently."
Aldric looked toward Arin.
"And me?"
"No."
The Duke stared.
Arin continued.
"This is Player business."
"You’re my son."
"Still not relevant."
Aldric almost argued.
Then stopped himself.
Progress.
Roland appeared at the doorway.
"Young Master."
"What?"
"We found something in the western courtyard."
Arin’s patience thinned.
"What now?"
Roland held out a small black object.
A phone.
Not Marcus’s.
Different model.
Older.
Cracked.
Arin stared.
"Where?"
"Where the breach closed."
Aisha went still.
Victor swore.
Selene stepped closer.
Arin did not touch it.
"Any mana?"
"None."
"System response?"
Victor checked.
His face changed.
"Yes."
Aisha’s interface reacted too.
Then Selene’s.
Arin’s Authority Band remained silent.
Interesting.
"What does it say?"
Victor looked toward him.
"It’s registered to a Player."
"Name."
Victor swallowed.
"Daniel Park."
Silence.
The phone screen activated by itself.
One message appeared.
IF FOURTEEN IS READING THIS, PLAYER ONE HAS ALREADY FAILED.
Arin’s eyes narrowed.
A second line appeared.
DO NOT TRUST MARCUS HALE.
Victor stared.
Aisha’s face hardened.
Then a third.
DO NOT KILL HIM EITHER.
Arin almost laughed.
At least whoever wrote this understood his problems.
The message continued.
MARCUS IS NOT PLAYER ONE.
HE IS PLAYER ONE’S STORAGE HOST.
Aisha whispered:
"Storage?"
Arin remembered Edwin.
Marcus gaining settlement functions.
Daniel’s unit command.
Functions accumulating.
Not because Marcus was the original Player One.
Because his System was collecting pieces.
The next line appeared.
PLAYER ONE WAS DISTRIBUTED AFTER DANIEL’S DEATH.
FIVE HOSTS CARRY THE PARTS.
Victor’s face went pale.
"Five."
Arin stared.
The active Player count.
Five.
Not coincidence.
Another line.
WHEN ALL FIVE FUNCTIONS REUNITE, PLAYER ONE RETURNS.
Selene’s expression changed completely.
"Returns."
The phone vibrated.
Then displayed five names.
MARCUS HALE — ACQUISITION.
VICTOR KANE — COMBAT.
SELENE MARR — ANALYSIS.
AISHA RAHMAN — SURVIVAL.
ELENA VOLKOV — SOUL.
Everyone froze.
Elena had lost her System.
Which meant one part was no longer where it was supposed to be.
Victor whispered:
"Where did Soul go?"
The phone answered.
SOUL FUNCTION:
UNASSIGNED.
Then the final name appeared.
REPLACEMENT HOST SELECTION:
IN PROGRESS.
Arin’s Authority Band flashed.
Not black.
White.
Sanctuary.
Then EVE screamed through the Family Link.
"FOUNDER!"
Arin looked up.
"What?"
"Elena’s condition has changed!"
His expression hardened.
"How?"
"She is unconscious."
"System?"
"Still absent."
"Then what?"
A pause.
EVE’s voice became frightened.
"Something is attempting to enter her body."
The black phone screen changed again.
SOUL FUNCTION HAS SELECTED NEAREST COMPATIBLE SANCTUARY HOST.
Arin froze.
Elena.
Sanctuary had protected her from the old System.
But that protection had also kept her intact.
Available.
The screen displayed:
REUNIFICATION STEP 1 OF 5:
BEGINNING.
Arin turned toward Victor’s aircraft.
"Move."
Everyone ran.
They were airborne in less than three minutes.
Victor pushed the fighter harder than before.
Aisha sat behind them.
Selene beside her.
No one spoke unnecessarily.
Arin stayed connected to EVE.
"Elena."
"Stable physically."
"Mentally?"
"No response."
"Can Sanctuary block entry?"
"Attempting."
"Result?"
"Unknown function does not classify as hostile extraction."
Of course.
It wasn’t taking something out.
It was putting something in.
"Classify forced insertion as hostile."
A pause.
"Founder..."
"What?"
"Sanctuary definition protects against external control and systemic harm."
"Yes."
"Soul function claims restoration."
Arin’s expression went cold.
"Elena didn’t ask for restoration."
Silence.
Then EVE answered:
"Understood."
Good.
"Her consent?"
"Unavailable."
"Then no."
"Founder, legacy law may consider unconscious host eligible."
"I don’t care."
Aisha heard enough through translation.
"That’s going to become another System argument, isn’t it?"
"Yes."
Victor almost smiled.
The fighter crossed the mountains.
Then Marcus’s voice entered.
Not through EVE.
Directly through the Player channel.
"Arin."
Everyone froze.
Arin answered.
"Marcus."
"You found Daniel’s phone."
Not a question.
Arin’s expression hardened.
"How do you know?"
Marcus sounded exhausted.
"Because something inside me woke up when you did."
There.
"Are you still contained?"
"Yes."
"Stay that way."
"Wasn’t planning otherwise."
Arin looked toward Victor.
Victor kept flying.
Marcus continued.
"I remember Daniel."
Silence.
"More than before."
"What?"
"He didn’t die five years ago."
Aisha looked toward Selene.
Arin’s voice lowered.
"Explain."
Marcus swallowed audibly.
"I did."
Victor’s grip tightened.
Arin remained still.
"You killed Daniel."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"I don’t remember choosing to."
Silence.
The exact danger.
System control.
Marcus continued.
"We were fighting Hollow Crown."
His voice shook.
"Daniel was injured."
"Then?"
"My quest appeared."
Arin waited.
"Absorb Player One."
Victor whispered a curse.
Marcus continued.
"I said no."
Of course.
"Then everything went black."
Arin’s jaw tightened.
"When you woke?"
"Daniel was dead."
"And his function?"
"Inside me."
Acquisition.
Exactly.
Marcus sounded close to breaking.
"I thought Hollow Crown killed him because the System changed the memory."
Selene whispered:
"Evidence reconstruction could confirm."
Arin looked at her.
"Later."
She nodded.
Marcus continued.
"Arin."
"What?"
"Don’t bring us together."
The fighter cabin went silent.
"Why?"
"I can feel Victor."
Victor’s face changed.
"Selene."
She froze.
"Aisha."
Aisha went pale.
Marcus’s voice became terrified.
"The closer you all get..."
A pause.
"...the louder Player One becomes."
Arin looked around.
They were all currently inside one aircraft.
Victor.
Selene.
Aisha.
Three of five fragments.
Marcus waiting at Elysium.
Four.
Elena at Elysium, where Soul was trying to enter.
Five.
They were delivering the pieces together.
Damn.
"Victor."
"Yeah?"
"Turn around."
His eyes widened.
"We’re almost there."
"Turn around."
He immediately banked.
Aisha grabbed the seat.
"Why?"
Arin opened a channel to EVE.
"Evacuate Marcus."
"Where?"
"Opposite side of the valley."
"Founder, why—"
"Now."
Then:
"Move Elena."
"Opposite direction."
"Victor?"
"Keep him outside Elysium."
"Selene and Aisha too."
EVE understood.
"Separation."
"Yes."
Player One needed convergence.
They would deny it.
Marcus’s voice came again.
"Too late."
Arin froze.
"What?"
Every Player System activated simultaneously.
Victor’s cockpit interface blackened.
Selene grabbed her head.
Aisha screamed.
Marcus’s voice distorted.
Not his anymore.
Five voices overlapped.
Male.
Female.
Old.
Young.
Then one voice emerged from all of them.
Calm.
Familiar.
Daniel’s.
"Thank you."
Arin’s blood ran cold.
The fighter controls locked.
Victor pulled.
Nothing.
"ARIN!"
The aircraft turned itself.
Back toward House Elysium.
Full speed.
Arin’s Authority Band flashed.
MULTIPLE PLAYER FUNCTIONS SYNCHRONIZING.
ACQUISITION.
COMBAT.
ANALYSIS.
SURVIVAL.
SOUL.
One by one.
Then:
PLAYER ONE RECONSTRUCTION:
21%.
Arin stared toward the mountains.
House Elysium lay ahead.
Marcus inside.
Elena inside.
The Player Network had not needed every System physically merged.
It only needed them connected.
And Elysium’s communication network had just given them the perfect bridge.
"EVE!"
No answer.
"Disconnect all Player communications!"
Static.
Then Daniel’s voice came through Arin’s own Authority Band.
"Don’t."
Arin went completely still.
The voice laughed softly.
"Fourteen."
A pause.
"I’ve been waiting a very long time to meet the person I designed to stop me."
And the fighter accelerated toward Elysium.
