AFTER BEING EXILED: MY SISTER AND I BUILD HIDDEN CIVILIZATIONS
Chapter 48 - 47: The Thing That Answered
Chapter 48: Chapter 47: The Thing That Answered
For three seconds, no one in House Elysium moved.
The message remained across every active screen.
FINAL ELYSIUM, WE FOUND YOU AGAIN.
OPEN THE DOOR.
Arin stared at it.
Victor stood beside him with his jaw tight.
Lyra had gone quiet.
Luna looked frightened in a way Arin had not seen before.
Even A-01 remained completely still.
That mattered.
Then the Navigation percentage moved again.
38% → 41%.
Arin’s eyes narrowed.
"EVE."
"Founder."
"Kill Navigation."
"Unable."
"Why?"
"External handshake has inherited partial route authority."
"Through what?"
"Final Elysium."
"That is not an answer."
EVE paused.
"Through Route Key resonance."
Arin looked toward Keys Seven and Fourteen.
Still floating inside containment.
Of course.
The moment they resonated, they had not merely revealed the Family Vault.
They had opened a path.
Mira’s voice came through the network.
"It’s looking through the door."
Arin turned toward her feed.
"What can you see?"
She shook her head.
"Not clearly."
"Try."
Her black eye darkened.
The white one glowed brighter.
Then she screamed.
The feed shook.
Arin’s voice sharpened.
"Stop."
Mira clutched her face.
Blood ran between her fingers.
"I saw..."
"Stop looking."
"Arin."
"No."
"It’s huge."
"Not useful enough to justify hurting yourself."
Mira froze.
Then slowly nodded.
Good.
Arin looked toward EVE.
"Disconnect the Route Keys."
"Attempting."
Silver restraints formed around Seven and Fourteen.
The keys vibrated violently.
Then—
DISCONNECTION FAILED.
ACTIVE ROUTE HANDSHAKE CANNOT BE INTERRUPTED LOCALLY.
Victor swore.
"Locally?"
Arin caught it.
"Meaning remote interruption exists."
EVE processed.
"Possibly."
"Where?"
"Navigation Core."
Of course.
"Location."
The map expanded.
Final Elysium had four major chains.
Power.
Preservation.
Family Anchor.
Navigation.
The Navigation Core sat absurdly deep beneath the northern mountains.
Far below ordinary Elysium.
Far below Ark Prime.
Far below even the World Cradle.
Victor stared.
"How far?"
EVE answered.
"Approximately nineteen kilometers."
Silence.
Lyra looked at Arin.
"Down?"
"Yes."
"That’s very down."
"Accurate."
Seraphine’s voice returned through the system.
"You cannot reach it in time."
Arin looked toward the nearest screen.
"How long?"
She hesitated.
Interesting.
"You know."
No answer.
"Seraphine."
"Twenty-seven minutes."
Everyone went still.
Navigation moved again.
44%.
Arin’s expression hardened.
"Until what?"
Seraphine answered quietly.
"Handshake completion."
"And then?"
Silence.
Arin’s patience vanished.
"What happens?"
Her answer came softly.
"The door becomes two-way."
Victor looked toward Arin.
Lyra whispered:
"Can something come through?"
Seraphine answered before Arin could.
"Yes."
Luna flinched.
Arin turned toward her.
"You remember something."
She shook her head.
"Not memory."
"What then?"
"Fear."
That was enough.
Arin looked at A-01.
"Prime Fall records."
"Restricted."
"Override."
"Insufficient authority."
Arin smiled faintly.
Not because anything was funny.
Because he was getting tired of that sentence.
"Then give me what isn’t restricted."
A-01 processed.
PRIME FALL PUBLIC SAFETY LOGS AVAILABLE.
"Show."
The room changed.
Not entirely.
A projection appeared.
Old Elysium.
Thousands of years earlier.
Alarm lights.
People running.
The sky above the city black.
Not night.
Covered.
Something enormous moved beyond the clouds.
Then one of the Ark structures vanished.
No explosion.
No collapse.
Gone.
Victor stopped breathing.
Another city on the horizon disappeared.
Then another.
Text filled the recording.
EXTERNAL CIVILIZATION ACCESS CONFIRMED.
PRESERVATION NETWORK COMPROMISED.
CITIES REMOVED FROM LOCAL REALITY.
Arin’s eyes narrowed.
"Removed."
Seraphine spoke.
"Taken."
"Where?"
"We never learned."
The projection continued.
Cael appeared.
Younger.
Covered in blood.
Screaming orders.
Guardian Zero flew overhead in its full form.
Then another figure.
Noah.
Player Two.
Holding the Administrator Key.
The recording flickered.
A black opening formed in the sky.
Something looked through.
Not entered.
Looked.
That alone made thousands of systems fail.
The recording ended.
Lyra’s voice was very small.
"That happened because the door opened?"
Seraphine answered:
"Yes."
Arin looked toward the Navigation percentage.
47%.
"Then why did you activate Final Elysium?"
Seraphine went silent.
Arin’s voice hardened.
"You knew this could happen."
"I believed the route was dead."
"Believed."
"Three thousand years passed."
"That isn’t an answer."
Seraphine’s tone sharpened.
"I had no reason to believe it still existed."
Arin stared toward the screen.
"There were enough reasons for Cael to bury this entire civilization."
Silence.
"You activated it anyway."
"I was trying to preserve this world."
"No."
Arin’s expression became cold.
"You were trying to control the solution."
Seraphine did not answer.
Good.
Arin turned toward EVE.
"Fastest route to Navigation Core."
"Standard transit unavailable."
"Alternative."
"Maintenance drop shafts."
"Time?"
"Approximately forty-one minutes."
Too slow.
"Other."
"World Cradle internal transport."
"Active?"
"Partially."
"Time?"
"Seventeen minutes."
There.
"Risk?"
"Unknown."
Victor laughed once.
"Naturally."
Arin looked toward A-01.
"You know the system?"
"Somewhat."
"Come."
A-01 nodded.
Arin turned toward Victor.
"You stay."
Victor stared.
"No."
"Yes."
"You need someone with combat capability."
"I have A-01."
Victor looked toward the Termination Officer.
"Fair."
"And if the Player bounty changes while I’m below, Elysium needs someone who understands it."
Victor’s expression shifted.
That was harder to argue with.
"Fine."
Arin looked toward Lyra and Luna.
"Both of you stay here."
Lyra crossed her arms.
Arin raised one eyebrow.
She sighed.
"Fine."
Luna looked less certain.
Arin crouched slightly.
"You’re not responsible for this."
"But I’m the Anchor."
"Passive Anchor."
"If I wasn’t here—"
"No."
His voice cut her off.
"You don’t get blamed for a machine using you without consent."
Luna stared.
Then slowly nodded.
Good.
Arin stood.
"Family Link stays open."
Lyra nodded immediately.
"Always."
Arin turned.
Then stopped.
"Seraphine."
Silence.
"You know the Navigation Core."
A pause.
"Yes."
"You’re coming too."
Victor looked toward the screen.
"How exactly?"
Seraphine laughed bitterly.
"Founder Fourteen finally asks for help."
Arin’s expression did not change.
"I asked for information."
"Difference?"
"Large."
Another pause.
Then:
"I can guide you."
"Good."
"And in return?"
"Nothing."
Seraphine laughed.
"You expect cooperation without leverage?"
Arin looked toward Navigation.
49%.
"No."
He started walking.
"I expect you to understand that whatever is outside hates you too."
That silenced her.
Good enough.
The entrance to World Cradle transit lay beneath the Family Vault.
Naturally.
Arin had stopped being surprised by Elysium hiding important infrastructure beneath other important infrastructure.
The elevator descended so fast his stomach shifted.
A-01 stood beside him.
No expression.
No discomfort.
Unfair.
Arin activated the Family Link.
"Lyra."
"Here."
"Luna."
"Here."
"EVE."
"Here."
Good.
Seraphine’s voice entered separately.
"Transit junction ahead."
The elevator stopped.
Doors opened.
Arin stepped into a corridor wider than a city street.
No decorations.
No homes.
Pure machinery.
Gigantic conduits ran along both walls.
Transport rails disappeared into darkness.
At the center sat a narrow vehicle.
Black.
Four seats.
No wheels.
Arin stared.
"That’s transport?"
Seraphine answered.
"Yes."
"Controls?"
"Automatic."
"Destination?"
"Navigation Spine."
Arin entered.
A-01 sat beside him.
The vehicle sealed.
Then launched.
Arin’s head hit the seat.
"Wonderful."
A-01 turned.
"Pain response detected."
"I’m aware."
The tunnel became a blur.
Numbers moved.
Navigation:
51%.
Time:
22:04.
Arin looked toward Seraphine’s channel.
"Prime Fall."
"What?"
"Why did the outside civilization want Elysium?"
Silence.
"Seraphine."
"We never learned its full objective."
"Guess."
She hesitated.
"It collects civilizations."
Arin frowned.
"Collects."
"Not conquers."
"Difference?"
"Conquest leaves something behind."
That was unpleasant.
Seraphine continued.
"Every civilization it contacted disappeared."
"Physically."
"Yes."
"Population too."
"Yes."
"Technology?"
"Yes."
"Worlds?"
A pause.
"Sometimes."
Arin’s expression hardened.
"Entire planets disappeared?"
"Not destroyed."
"Taken."
"Yes."
He looked ahead.
"How many confirmed?"
"Eleven."
Silence.
A-01 spoke.
"Public records list four."
Seraphine answered:
"Administrative records listed eleven."
Arin looked toward the invisible connection.
"So you hid seven."
"To prevent panic."
"Naturally."
Seraphine sounded irritated.
"Not every secret is manipulation."
"No."
Arin’s voice remained calm.
"But your history makes assuming otherwise reasonable."
No answer.
The transport accelerated.
Navigation:
53%.
Then the corridor lights flickered.
A new voice entered.
Not Seraphine.
Not EVE.
Not the Network.
The outside civilization.
"FOURTEEN."
Arin went still.
A-01’s head snapped up.
The voice came from everywhere.
"WE REMEMBER YOUR PATTERN."
Arin’s eyes narrowed.
"My pattern?"
No answer.
Then:
"YOU ARE INCOMPLETE."
The transport shook.
A-01 raised its spear.
"External influence penetrating transit systems."
Arin looked toward the black windows.
Something moved outside the tunnel.
Impossible.
They were nineteen kilometers underground.
Still, a shadow traveled alongside them.
Arin’s Authority Band flickered.
UNKNOWN REALITY CONTACT.
"Seraphine."
"I see it."
"You sound worried."
"I am."
Honest.
Good.
"Can it enter?"
"Not until handshake completion."
Navigation:
57%.
"Then why can we hear it?"
"Contact pressure."
"Meaning?"
"It is leaning against the door."
Arin hated ancient terminology.
Then the voice returned.
"PLAYER TWO ROUTE CONFIRMED."
His expression changed.
It recognized the route fragment.
"YOU CARRY THE LAST COORDINATE."
A-01 turned toward him.
Arin spoke toward the empty tunnel.
"You want the Administrator Key."
Silence.
Then:
"WE WANT WHAT OPENS WORLDS."
Good.
Confirmation.
"Why?"
"TO COMPLETE THEM."
Arin almost laughed.
"That’s vague."
The shadow beside the vehicle grew larger.
"INCOMPLETE WORLDS SUFFER."
Arin’s expression cooled.
"Let me guess."
He looked toward the darkness.
"You take them somewhere better."
"YES."
Seraphine whispered:
"Don’t engage it."
Arin ignored her.
"And nobody gets a choice."
The voice answered instantly.
"CHOICE CREATES FAILURE."
There it was.
Arin sighed.
"Of course."
A-01 looked toward him.
"Founder?"
"Everyone powerful seems to have the same personality."
Seraphine sounded offended.
"This is not the time."
"It’s exactly the time."
Navigation:
60%.
The vehicle slowed.
Ahead, an enormous vertical chamber opened.
The Navigation Spine.
Arin stared.
A rotating structure filled the entire shaft.
Rings larger than stadiums turned around a central black sphere.
Millions of lights mapped stars.
Worlds.
Routes.
Some real.
Some impossible.
The vehicle stopped at a narrow platform.
"Time?"
A-01 answered.
HANDSHAKE COMPLETION:
16:41.
Arin stepped out.
"Where is the cutoff?"
Seraphine projected a path.
Far below.
"Manual isolation chamber."
"Distance?"
"Eight hundred meters."
"Why manual?"
"Because automatic isolation was disabled during Prime Fall."
"By you?"
Silence.
Arin closed his eyes.
"Seraphine."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Cael attempted to sever every Ark route permanently."
"That sounds increasingly sensible."
"He would have trapped millions."
"And your solution nearly lost worlds."
No answer.
Good.
Arin started down the platform.
A-01 followed.
Then alarms activated.
NAVIGATION:
63%.
The outside voice became louder.
"OPEN."
Arin ignored it.
A black figure appeared on the path ahead.
Human-shaped.
No face.
A copy.
The same height as Arin.
Same posture.
Then armor formed around it.
His MK-I suit.
Victor’s rifle appeared in its hand.
Arin stopped.
A-01 lowered its spear.
"External construct."
The figure raised the rifle.
Arin moved.
The first shot tore through the platform behind him.
Real damage.
Good to know.
A-01 charged.
The construct fired.
A-01 blocked with the spear.
Arin moved left.
The copy tracked him perfectly.
Too perfectly.
"Pattern."
Seraphine’s voice sharpened.
"It is reading your route signature."
Arin frowned.
"Meaning?"
"It knows possible versions of you."
That was irritating.
The copy shifted.
Now holding Lucan’s knife.
Then Vaelor’s mana aura.
Then Elena’s necromantic chains.
Abilities from people Arin had encountered.
Not exact.
Simulations.
The thing was building a combat model.
Arin smiled faintly.
A-01 noticed.
"Founder."
"What?"
"You appear pleased."
"It made an assumption."
The copy charged.
Arin did not.
He stepped backward.
Reached toward the emergency panel.
The construct followed.
Predictable.
Arin hit the panel.
A maintenance wall slammed down between them.
The copy cut through it.
But Arin had already moved.
He wasn’t trying to beat it.
Just delay.
A-01 followed.
They ran.
Seraphine spoke:
"You cannot outpace it."
"Don’t need to."
Navigation:
66%.
"Isolation chamber."
"Two levels down."
They reached a broken elevator.
No power.
Of course.
Arin looked over the edge.
Thirty meters.
A-01 jumped.
Arin stared.
Then sighed.
"Everyone in this city is unreasonable."
He grabbed the emergency cable.
Slid down.
Fast.
Too fast.
His hands burned.
He hit the lower platform badly.
LANDING QUALITY:
POOR.
Arin stared at the notification.
"EVE is not even here."
A-01 looked toward him.
"System-generated."
"That somehow makes it worse."
The construct dropped behind them.
No cable.
Just fell.
Landed perfectly.
Arin became personally offended.
They ran.
Navigation:
69%.
The Isolation Chamber appeared ahead.
Circular door.
Manual lever.
Simple.
Arin almost distrusted it because of that.
"Open."
A-01 pulled.
Nothing.
Seraphine spoke:
"Two-person operation."
"Of course."
Arin grabbed the second lever.
They pulled together.
The door opened.
Inside sat one console.
One button.
Red.
Victor would have laughed.
Arin stepped inside.
"Function?"
Seraphine answered.
"Severs all external route handshakes."
"Consequence?"
"Navigation Core shutdown."
"Temporary?"
"Unknown."
"Surface?"
"Unaffected."
"Final Elysium?"
"Immobilized."
Good.
Arin reached toward the button.
The outside voice screamed.
Not physically.
Inside his skull.
"DO NOT."
He pressed.
Nothing happened.
Arin stared.
"Why?"
Seraphine swore.
First time he’d heard her do that.
"Founder authorization required."
"I am Founder."
"Final Elysium does not recognize current authority hierarchy."
Naturally.
"What does it recognize?"
A prompt appeared.
REQUIRED:
CIVILIZATION AUTHORITY.
Arin went completely still.
There it was.
The upgrade he had rejected.
The Network-added authority.
Of course it controlled Navigation.
The outside civilization spoke softly now.
"CLAIM."
Arin stared at the prompt.
CLAIM CIVILIZATION AUTHORITY TO EXECUTE EMERGENCY ISOLATION?
A-01 turned toward him.
Seraphine whispered:
"Arin."
He said nothing.
If he claimed it, he could close the door.
Maybe.
He could also become integrated with Elysium.
Become another Cael.
Or worse.
Exactly what the Network wanted.
Navigation:
74%.
Time:
08:11.
The construct reached the chamber entrance.
A-01 blocked it.
Spear against rifle.
Metal screamed.
Arin stared at the authorization.
False choice.
Again.
Always.
Claim dangerous power or let the door open.
No.
He had already rejected this logic.
"System."
LISTENING.
"Distributed Civilization Path."
ACTIVE.
"Emergency resident authority."
GOVERNANCE INCOMPLETE.
"Temporary delegation."
INVALID.
Arin’s expression hardened.
"Sanctuary principle."
Silence.
"Protection without ownership."
The System flickered.
"House Elysium residents voted not to allow evacuation."
Another flicker.
"Their decision is being overridden by Navigation."
CONFLICT DETECTED.
Good.
"Then who has authority?"
CIVILIZATION AUTHORITY REQUIRED.
"No."
The outside voice whispered:
"CLAIM."
Arin smiled.
"Still no."
Navigation:
78%.
A-01 was thrown backward.
The construct entered.
Arin drew the energy sidearm.
Fired.
The construct dodged.
Expected.
Arin fired at the floor.
It adjusted.
A-01 attacked again.
Arin looked toward the red button.
Then toward Family Authority.
Residents.
Sanctuary.
Covenant.
Different pieces.
Different protections.
No single ruler.
That was the point.
He opened the citywide connection.
"EVE."
Static.
Then:
"Founder."
"Can residents vote remotely?"
A pause.
"Yes."
Seraphine immediately understood.
"Arin, there is no time."
"How many active residents?"
"Eleven thousand nine hundred able to respond."
"Send emergency authorization."
"For what?"
Arin looked toward the button.
"Temporary Navigation shutdown."
EVE paused.
Then:
"Founder, legacy system may reject civilian authority."
"Let it."
He smiled faintly.
"Then we’ll have proof it doesn’t serve them."
The referendum went out.
Across Elysium.
Thousands of newly awakened people received one question.
UNKNOWN EXTERNAL CIVILIZATION IS ATTEMPTING ACCESS.
DO YOU AUTHORIZE TEMPORARY SHUTDOWN OF FINAL ELYSIUM NAVIGATION?
Votes poured in.
Navigation:
81%.
Time:
04:59.
The construct slammed A-01 into the wall.
Arin fired twice.
One round struck the copy.
It regenerated.
Fine.
Votes:
2,000.
4,000.
6,000.
Navigation:
84%.
The outside voice roared.
"YOU CANNOT HIDE."
Arin looked toward the invisible presence.
"Watch me."
Votes:
8,500.
Final:
AUTHORIZE SHUTDOWN:
10,104.
DENY:
ABSTAIN:
1,174.
The System froze.
CIVILIAN AUTHORITY NOT RECOGNIZED UNDER LEGACY NAVIGATION LAW.
Arin’s expression hardened.
Expected.
Then another message appeared.
DISTRIBUTED CIVILIZATION PATH RESPONSE DETECTED.
84.9% OF AVAILABLE RESIDENTS HAVE ISSUED CONSISTENT EMERGENCY DIRECTIVE.
The red button lit.
Arin stared.
TEMPORARY CIVILIZATION CONSENSUS GENERATED.
EMERGENCY AUTHORITY VALID FOR:
60 SECONDS.
There.
Not Civilization Authority.
Civilization consensus.
Arin slammed the button.
The Navigation Core screamed.
Every rotating ring stopped.
The black sphere at the center cracked with white light.
Navigation dropped.
84% → 0%.
The outside voice became deafening.
"NO."
Arin held the button.
"Yes."
The handshake severed.
Every star map vanished.
The shadow beside reality disappeared.
The construct froze.
A-01 drove the spear through its chest.
It shattered.
Silence.
For one second, Arin simply stood there.
Then the entire Navigation Spine went dark.
Seraphine whispered:
"You did it."
Arin released the button.
"No."
He looked toward the citywide vote still displayed.
"They did."
A new System message appeared.
DISTRIBUTED CIVILIZATION MILESTONE ACHIEVED.
FIRST COLLECTIVE EMERGENCY DIRECTIVE COMPLETED.
CIVILIZATION AUTHORITY ALTERNATIVE EVOLVING.
Arin smiled faintly.
Then another message appeared.
Not Elysium.
Not the Player Network.
The outside civilization.
One final transmission.
ROUTE LOST.
SEARCHING FOR ALTERNATE ANCHOR.
Arin’s smile vanished.
"Alternate anchor."
Seraphine went silent.
Arin’s blood ran cold.
"Where?"
EVE screamed through the connection.
"FOUNDER!"
Arin turned.
"Status."
"External handshake reappeared."
"Location?"
A pause.
Then the answer.
"House Valerius."
Arin froze.
Of course.
The old hidden chamber.
Noah.
Route Fourteen’s legacy site.
Aldric.
Aisha.
Selene missing.
The outside civilization had found another door.
And before Arin could speak, a second message arrived.
From Roland.
Only three words.
"THE SKY OPENED."
