Chapter 46: Chapter 45: I Only Have One Sister

For one heartbeat, Arin did nothing.

The new registration remained suspended above his Authority Band.

FAMILY AUTHORITY REGISTRATION COMPLETE.

NEW MEMBER:

UNKNOWN.

RELATIONSHIP:

SISTER.

Beneath it were two entries.

LYRA ELYSIUM — SISTER.

UNKNOWN — SISTER.

Arin stared at the second line.

Then his expression went completely blank.

"No."

The Authority Band flickered.

FAMILY REGISTRATION CONFIRMED.

"I said no."

REGISTRATION ORIGIN:

FAMILY VAULT.

Victor stood several meters away, watching the silver Route Keys hovering in the air.

"What happened?"

Arin ignored him.

"EVE."

"Founder."

"Remove the registration."

A pause.

"Unable."

"Why?"

"Family Vault Authority currently exceeds standard Family administration permissions."

That was new.

Arin hated new.

"Override."

"Attempting."

The interface flashed.

OVERRIDE DENIED.

REASON:

RELATIONSHIP VERIFIED.

Arin’s eyes narrowed.

Verified.

Not assigned.

Not claimed.

Verified.

That was significantly worse.

"I have one sister."

Mira looked toward him.

"Maybe not."

Arin slowly turned his head.

Mira immediately raised both hands.

"Just saying."

"Don’t."

"Okay."

Lyra’s voice came through the Family Link again.

"Big Brother?"

Everything else became secondary.

"Lyra."

"I’m okay."

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

"Can you move?"

"Yes."

"Leave the room."

A pause.

"I tried."

Arin’s expression hardened.

"The door?"

"It opens."

"Then leave."

"The hallway keeps bringing me back."

Mira’s black eye widened.

"Folded door."

Arin looked at her.

"Explain while moving."

He started toward the mountain entrance.

Victor followed.

Mira hurried after them.

"The room isn’t physically closed."

"Then what?"

"Possibility loop."

"Normal words."

Mira thought while running.

"Every exit becomes the same room."

Good enough.

"EVE, physical location of Lyra."

"Bedroom, Residential Family Wing."

"A-01?"

"Standing immediately outside."

"Can it enter?"

"Yes."

"Then why hasn’t it?"

"A-01 reports entering the room repeatedly."

Arin stopped.

"What?"

EVE continued.

"Each entry returns A-01 to the hallway."

So the effect worked both directions.

Arin resumed walking faster.

"Destroy the wall."

Victor looked at him.

"Straight to demolition?"

"It’s my wall."

EVE responded.

"A-01 attempted structural breach."

"And?"

"Damaged section restored itself."

Arin’s expression darkened.

Not physical.

"Lyra."

"I’m here."

"Do you still see Seraphine?"

"No."

"Anyone else?"

Silence.

Arin stopped again.

"Lyra."

Her voice became smaller.

"Yes."

"Who?"

"I don’t know."

Mira’s expression changed.

Arin continued.

"Describe them."

"A girl."

His eyes moved toward the unknown sister entry.

"Age?"

"Maybe... my age."

"Appearance?"

Lyra hesitated.

"She looks like me."

Silence.

Victor stopped walking.

Mira whispered:

"Oh."

Arin’s expression remained completely still.

"Exactly like you?"

"No."

"Difference?"

"Her hair is white."

Arin looked toward Mira.

Mira touched her own silver hair.

"Not me."

"I know."

Lyra continued.

"And her eyes are gold."

"Clothes?"

"White dress."

"Threatening?"

"No."

"Weapon?"

"No."

"What is she doing?"

A pause.

"Looking at my stuff."

Arin blinked.

"What?"

"She picked up Mr. Buttons."

Something about that offended him more than expected.

"Tell her to put him down."

Victor stared at him.

Mira covered her mouth.

Lyra whispered something away from the Family Link.

Then:

"She put him down."

Good.

"Did she speak?"

"She asked why I have toys."

Arin frowned.

"What did you say?"

"Because they’re mine."

Reasonable.

"And?"

"She said she never had any."

That changed the atmosphere.

Arin looked toward the Family Vault tower rising from Elysium.

The unknown sister wasn’t attacking.

She wasn’t threatening Lyra.

She was confused.

Possibly.

"Do not touch her."

"Okay."

"Do not agree to anything."

"Okay."

"Do not accept gifts."

"Okay."

"Do not give her anything."

Lyra paused.

"What about food?"

Arin closed his eyes.

Of course.

"Not yet."

"She’s hungry."

"How do you know?"

"She said so."

Mira smiled.

"I like Lyra more every minute."

Arin ignored her.

They crossed the hidden boundary.

The moment Arin entered Elysium, Family Authority surged.

The entire city appeared inside his perception.

Residents.

Security.

Infrastructure.

Lyra.

And—

Something else.

He felt it.

Not through the Player Network.

Not through Sanctuary.

Family Authority.

A second presence.

Small.

Unfamiliar.

Connected.

Arin stopped.

Victor nearly walked into him.

"What?"

Arin stared toward the residential district.

"I can feel her."

"The unknown girl?"

"Yes."

Mira’s white eye glowed.

"Family bond."

"She isn’t family."

Mira looked at him carefully.

"Your power disagrees."

"My power has been wrong before."

That shut her up.

Good.

Arin opened the Family interface.

UNKNOWN SISTER.

STATUS:

STABLE.

LOCATION:

FAMILY WING.

AUTHORITY:

MINIMAL.

BLOODLINE VERIFICATION:

COMPLETE.

Arin froze.

Bloodline.

Victor read his expression.

"What now?"

Arin showed him.

Victor stared.

"That’s impossible."

"Yes."

"Could Elysium fabricate blood relation?"

"EVE?"

"Family Vault bloodline verification operates independently."

"Accuracy?"

"Historical specification indicates 99.9998 percent."

Victor slowly looked toward Arin.

Arin’s expression became colder.

"I still have one sister."

Mira sighed.

"You’re stubborn."

"Yes."

They reached the Family Wing.

A-01 stood outside Lyra’s room.

Its spear was deployed.

Several sections of the wall were visibly damaged.

Then repairing themselves.

"Founder."

"Report."

"Spatial phenomenon cannot be breached."

"Not spatial."

Mira corrected automatically.

A-01 looked at her.

"Identify."

"Mira."

"Classification."

"Girl."

Victor laughed.

A-01 stared.

Mira stared back.

Arin stepped between them.

"Later."

He placed his hand against Lyra’s door.

Family Authority reacted instantly.

FAMILY SPACE ACTIVE.

ENTRY AVAILABLE TO REGISTERED FAMILY.

There.

A-01 wasn’t family.

Neither were Victor or Mira.

Arin was.

"Open."

The door swung inward.

Normal bedroom.

Lyra stood beside the bed.

Alive.

Unhurt.

Arin’s shoulders loosened.

Then he saw the other girl.

She stood beside the window.

Same height as Lyra.

Same facial structure.

Same nose.

Same shape of eyes.

But white hair fell almost to her waist.

Golden eyes watched Arin with open curiosity.

A simple white dress covered her small frame.

Bare feet.

No jewelry.

No weapon.

No mana signature.

No Player signature.

Nothing.

Yet Family Authority screamed one undeniable fact.

Family.

Lyra pointed.

"That’s her."

Arin stepped inside.

The door closed behind him.

Victor shouted from outside.

The sound vanished.

Arin looked back.

No door.

Just wall.

Fine.

He turned toward the girl.

"Name."

She stared.

"I don’t have one."

Same answer Mira had given.

Arin disliked the pattern.

"Who created you?"

"I don’t know."

"Where were you before this room?"

"Sleeping."

"Where?"

"Dark."

"How long?"

"I don’t know."

"Do you know Seraphine?"

The girl’s expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

"Yes."

Arin noticed.

"What is she?"

"Mother."

Everything inside Arin stopped.

Lyra’s eyes widened.

"What?"

Arin’s voice became dangerously calm.

"Explain."

The girl backed toward the window.

"She told me she was Mother."

"Is she?"

"I don’t know."

Good answer.

"What did she call you?"

The girl looked down.

"Fourteen-B."

Arin stared.

Lyra immediately frowned.

"That’s a terrible name."

The girl looked toward her.

"I know."

Arin’s mind accelerated.

Fourteen-B.

Not a person designation.

A project designation.

"Fourteen-A?"

The girl’s golden eyes moved toward Lyra.

Arin’s blood went cold.

"No."

The girl flinched.

Lyra looked confused.

"What?"

Arin crouched slightly.

"Did Seraphine call Lyra Fourteen-A?"

The white-haired girl nodded.

Silence.

Arin’s expression became ice.

"What does Fourteen mean?"

"Founder compatibility generation."

There it was.

"What does A and B mean?"

The girl hesitated.

"Candidates."

Lyra’s face changed.

Arin remained calm.

Barely.

"Candidates for what?"

The girl pointed toward him.

"Your sister."

Silence.

Lyra looked at Arin.

Arin stared at the girl.

"That doesn’t make sense."

"I know."

"Why would someone need to create a sister for a Founder?"

"I don’t know."

"Guess."

The girl shook her head.

Arin stopped pushing.

She was a child.

Whatever Seraphine had done, the girl wasn’t responsible.

"Did Seraphine create you?"

"I think."

"From what?"

The girl touched her chest.

"Family material."

Arin’s jaw tightened.

"Whose?"

She looked toward Lyra.

"Her."

Lyra stepped backward.

Arin stood immediately.

"What did she take?"

"I don’t know."

"Blood?"

"Maybe."

"Memory?"

The girl hesitated.

That hesitation mattered.

"Answer."

"Some."

Lyra touched her head.

Arin’s expression hardened.

"When?"

"Before Lyra remembers."

That changed everything.

Before Lyra remembered.

Old.

Very old.

Possibly when she was a baby.

Arin remembered Elara.

Preservation Daughter.

Elysium.

Seraphine.

House Valerius.

The connections were becoming uglier.

"Why wake now?"

The girl looked toward the distant black tower visible through the window.

"The Family Vault opened."

"Because Keys Seven and Fourteen connected."

"Yes."

"Why were you inside it?"

"Backup."

Arin hated that word.

"Backup for what?"

The girl looked at Lyra.

"If she died."

Lyra went pale.

Arin did not move.

Did not speak.

For several seconds, the room felt colder.

The girl immediately became frightened.

"I didn’t want her to die."

Arin looked at her.

She was trembling.

Good.

Not because he wanted her afraid.

Because fear meant she understood death.

She wasn’t some emotionless construct.

"You’re not responsible."

The girl stared.

Arin repeated it.

"Whatever Seraphine made you for, you’re not responsible."

Her shoulders loosened slightly.

Lyra stepped closer to her.

Arin raised one hand.

"Lyra."

She stopped.

Good.

Still cautious.

"Why did Family Authority register her now?"

The girl answered.

"Vault recognized failure condition."

Arin frowned.

"What failure?"

"Fourteen-A rejected Administrator inheritance."

Lyra blinked.

"When?"

The white-haired girl looked at her.

"Last night."

Seraphine’s offer.

Power.

Lyra had refused.

So the Vault activated the backup.

Arin’s expression darkened.

Seraphine had prepared contingencies around his sister before he even became Founder.

"Why does Founder Fourteen need a sister candidate?"

The girl looked confused.

"I thought you knew."

"I don’t."

She stared at him.

Then said:

"Because Founder Fourteen cannot activate Final Elysium alone."

Arin became still.

"What is Final Elysium?"

The girl pointed downward.

Not toward the city.

Deeper.

Far deeper.

"Home."

Arin frowned.

"This is Elysium."

She shook her head.

"No."

His Authority Band reacted.

RESTRICTED TERM DETECTED.

FINAL ELYSIUM.

Arin stared.

"Unlock information."

ACCESS DENIED.

REQUIREMENT:

FOUNDER FOURTEEN + FAMILY ANCHOR.

Family Anchor.

Arin looked toward Lyra.

Then toward the white-haired girl.

"Which one?"

The girl whispered:

"Either."

That explained the backup.

Arin’s stomach turned.

Seraphine didn’t care which sister survived.

Only that Founder Fourteen had a compatible Family Anchor.

Lyra wasn’t merely his sister in the old system.

She was a component.

"No."

The girl blinked.

Arin looked at the interface.

"No activation."

COMMAND ACKNOWLEDGED.

Good.

At least something listened.

Lyra looked toward the other girl.

"What’s going to happen to her?"

Arin didn’t answer immediately.

He opened Family Authority.

UNKNOWN SISTER:

REGISTRATION PERMANENT UNTIL FAMILY ADJUDICATION.

"Can I remove her without harming her?"

YES.

The girl heard the System voice.

Her face changed.

She looked down.

"Oh."

Lyra immediately looked at Arin.

He already knew that expression.

"No."

Lyra frowned.

"You don’t even know what I was going to say."

"Yes, I do."

"She’s alone."

"I noticed."

"She has nowhere to go."

"I noticed."

"Seraphine made her."

"Also noticed."

Lyra crossed her arms.

Arin stared at her.

She stared back.

The white-haired girl watched both of them like she had discovered a completely foreign species.

Finally Arin sighed.

He looked toward the girl.

"Do you want to be my sister?"

Her eyes widened.

Lyra smiled immediately.

Arin pointed at her.

"Stop influencing the witness."

"I’m not."

"You are smiling aggressively."

Lyra tried to stop.

Failed.

The white-haired girl looked between them.

"I don’t know what a sister does."

Lyra answered before Arin could stop her.

"Annoys him."

Arin stared.

Lyra continued.

"Eats his food."

"Lyra."

"Takes his stuff."

"You’re describing crimes."

"Makes him buy things."

"I don’t buy you that much."

"Protects him."

Arin stopped.

Lyra’s voice softened.

"And he protects us."

The white-haired girl looked toward Arin.

Something uncertain appeared in her golden eyes.

"Would I have to activate Final Elysium?"

"No."

"Would I have to obey you?"

"No."

Lyra coughed.

Arin looked at her.

"Within reasonable safety rules."

The girl almost smiled.

"Would Seraphine own me?"

Arin’s expression changed.

"No."

"Would the Vault?"

"No."

"The System?"

"No."

"Then..."

She looked down at her hands.

"...can I stay?"

Arin stared at her.

A manufactured backup.

Created from Lyra’s family material.

Possibly carrying stolen memories.

Designed as a replacement.

A tool.

That was what Seraphine intended.

Arin had already decided what he thought about systems treating people as tools.

"Yes."

The girl’s head snapped up.

"But."

She tensed.

"You’re getting a real name."

Lyra immediately raised both hands.

"I choose!"

"No."

"Why?!"

"Because you’ll name her Princess Sparkle."

Lyra looked offended.

"I was thinking Luna."

Arin paused.

That was surprisingly normal.

The white-haired girl whispered:

"Luna."

She tested it.

Then smiled.

A small, uncertain smile.

"I like Luna."

Arin sighed.

"Fine."

Lyra celebrated.

Family Authority activated.

FAMILY ADJUDICATION AVAILABLE.

RETAIN REGISTRATION?

Arin looked at Luna.

Not Fourteen-B.

Not backup.

Not Family Anchor.

Luna.

"Retain."

White light filled the room.

FAMILY MEMBER CONFIRMED.

NAME:

LUNA ELYSIUM.

RELATIONSHIP:

SISTER.

Luna stared at the words.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Lyra immediately hugged her.

Arin’s hand moved.

Then stopped.

No danger.

He let it happen.

For perhaps five seconds, everything was quiet.

Then the entire city shook.

Arin closed his eyes.

Of course.

EVE’s voice exploded through Family Authority.

"FOUNDER!"

"What?"

"Final Elysium activation sequence has begun!"

Arin’s eyes snapped open.

"I explicitly said no."

"Activation was not initiated by you."

Lyra released Luna.

Arin looked toward the white-haired girl.

She looked equally terrified.

"Not Luna?"

"Negative."

"Then who?"

The bedroom wall disappeared.

The folded Family Space collapsed.

Arin stepped into the corridor.

Victor and A-01 waited outside.

Mira stood farther back.

Her black eye was wide.

Not looking at Luna.

Looking down.

Through the floor.

Through Elysium.

"Arin."

"What?"

Mira’s voice trembled.

"The door underneath the city opened."

Arin’s Authority Band flashed.

FINAL ELYSIUM:

FAMILY ANCHOR ACCEPTED.

EXTERNAL ACTIVATION AUTHORITY DETECTED.

Then:

ACTIVATING ADMINISTRATOR:

SERAPHINE.

Arin’s expression became completely cold.

The city shook again.

Deep beneath Ark Prime, something impossibly massive began moving.

EVE screamed across every speaker.

"Founder, underground structure expanding!"

"How large?"

A pause.

Then EVE answered:

"I cannot determine its boundary."

Arin frowned.

"Why?"

"Because..."

Her voice faltered.

"...it is larger than the valley."

Silence.

Then the floor beneath them became transparent.

Not physically.

A projection.

A map appeared.

Elysium sat above a black shape.

The shape expanded.

Beyond the valley.

Beyond the mountains.

Hundreds of kilometers.

Arin stared.

That wasn’t a facility.

It wasn’t a city.

It was something buried beneath an entire region.

The System finally identified it.

FINAL ELYSIUM STRUCTURE TYPE:

MOBILE CIVILIZATION ARK.

Victor read the translation.

His face went blank.

"A mobile what?"

Before Arin could answer, another line appeared.

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

WORLD EVACUATION.

Then:

SECONDARY FUNCTION:

WORLD REPLACEMENT.

Arin’s expression changed.

World replacement.

Not protection.

Not rebuilding.

Replacement.

And somewhere deep beneath them, Seraphine’s voice entered every Elysium system at once.

"Welcome home, my children."

Arin drew his sidearm.

Then Seraphine laughed.

"Now..."

The buried Ark began waking.

"...let’s build a better world."
