AFTER BEING EXILED: MY SISTER AND I BUILD HIDDEN CIVILIZATIONS
Chapter 44 - 43: The Passenger Wearing Number Two
Chapter 44: Chapter 43: The Passenger Wearing Number Two
For several seconds, Arin said nothing.
The fighter continued cutting through the sky toward House Valerius, engines roaring around him, but his attention remained fixed on the message floating above his Authority Band.
> TARGET CLARIFICATION:
EXTRACT PLAYER TWO.
HOST SURVIVAL:
OPTIONAL.
Host.
Not Player.
Host.
Arin read it again.
Victor glanced toward him from the pilot seat. "Arin?"
Arin ignored him.
Another flicker crossed his Authority Band.
> FOUNDER DESIGNATION: 14.
PLAYER DESIGNATION: 2.
COMPATIBILITY LAYER: UNKNOWN.
Then the text vanished.
Victor had seen enough.
"What the hell was that?"
"A problem."
"That’s becoming your answer for everything."
"It’s accurate."
Aisha’s voice remained on the communication channel from House Valerius.
"Arin."
"I’m listening."
"Good. Because if you come charging in and start shooting, this becomes much harder."
"I don’t usually start with shooting."
Victor looked sideways at him.
Arin looked back.
Victor wisely said nothing.
Aisha continued. "I need access to something beneath the Valerius estate."
Arin’s eyes narrowed.
"What?"
"An old chamber."
Duke Aldric’s voice suddenly sounded in the background.
"There is no chamber beneath my study."
Aisha sighed.
"Your family has owned this estate for centuries and somehow knows less about it than the servants."
Arin almost smiled.
Almost.
"Aisha."
"Yeah?"
"Why are you after my father?"
"I’m not."
"Then why his study?"
"Because the entrance is beneath it."
"Entrance to what?"
A pause.
"The place where Player Two was stored."
Victor’s hands tightened around the controls.
Arin became very still.
"Stored."
"Yes."
"Before me?"
"Long before you."
That aligned with Elysium’s records.
External Players had existed during Prime Fall.
"How long?"
"I don’t know."
"Estimate."
"Centuries."
Victor looked at Arin.
Arin ignored him.
Aisha continued. "I found references three years ago. Not enough to understand them. Just fragments. Then your bounty appeared, and suddenly my System unlocked information it had hidden from me."
"Convenient."
"Extremely."
"What information?"
"Player Two isn’t a person."
Silence.
Victor whispered, "Oh."
Arin leaned back.
That explained the wording.
Maybe.
"What is it?"
"I don’t know."
"That’s becoming everyone’s favorite answer."
"I can tell you what it isn’t."
"Go."
"It isn’t a normal System."
Arin looked at his Authority Band.
He already suspected that.
"It existed before the current Player Network."
Interesting.
"It was captured during Prime Fall."
More interesting.
"And House Valerius helped hide it."
Arin’s eyes hardened.
Victor glanced toward him.
"Your family?"
"Apparently."
Aisha continued. "I need you here before I open the chamber."
"Why?"
"Because your father is threatening to collapse the entire basement on me."
Aldric’s voice came faintly through the channel.
"I said I would collapse it if you attempted to enter without explaining yourself."
Aisha replied, "Same thing."
Arin closed his eyes briefly.
Of course.
"Father."
A pause.
"Arin."
"Don’t collapse anything."
"I had not intended to."
Aisha muttered something.
Aldric ignored her.
Arin continued. "Keep everyone away from the entrance."
"Already done."
"Roland?"
"Conscious."
"Selene?"
Silence.
Arin’s eyes opened.
"Father."
"We cannot locate her."
Victor looked over.
Arin’s expression hardened.
"When did she disappear?"
"Shortly before this woman arrived."
Aisha cut in.
"That wasn’t me."
"I didn’t say it was."
"Good."
Arin looked at Victor.
"Faster."
Victor pushed the throttle.
The aircraft surged forward.
"Finally."
---
They landed in the Valerius training field eleven minutes later.
Victor’s landing was annoyingly smooth.
Arin said nothing.
Victor looked at him.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"You’re comparing landings."
"No."
"You are."
Arin opened the canopy.
Victor smiled.
"Mine was better."
Arin jumped down.
"Your aircraft."
"Still counts."
"No."
Victor followed, laughing.
The estate was under lockdown.
Valerius guards lined the corridors, but the atmosphere was different from earlier. No panic. No mass fighting.
Aisha had apparently disabled everyone who tried to stop her without killing anyone.
That earned her exactly one point in Arin’s favor.
One.
Roland met him at the entrance.
His left arm was wrapped in a temporary bandage.
Arin looked at it.
"Aisha?"
Roland frowned.
"My pride suffered more."
"Meaning yes."
"She threw me through a table."
Victor laughed.
Roland glared at him.
"What did he say?"
"Nothing important."
"Good."
Arin continued toward the western wing.
"Father?"
"Study."
"Theron?"
"Still unconscious."
"Vaelor?"
"Still guarded."
"Selene?"
"Missing."
"Any signs of struggle?"
"No."
That bothered Arin more.
Selene was an investigator.
If she disappeared voluntarily, she had discovered something.
If she had been taken without leaving evidence, whoever did it was dangerous.
They reached Aldric’s study.
The door had been removed from its hinges.
Arin stopped.
Aisha stood inside.
Short black hair.
Dark skin.
Red travel jacket over practical leather armor.
No visible weapons except a survival knife.
Aldric stood opposite her with his sword drawn.
Neither looked particularly pleased.
Aisha saw Arin.
Her expression changed.
"So you’re Player Two."
Arin stared.
"Apparently not."
She smiled.
"Good answer."
Victor entered behind him.
Aisha’s smile vanished.
"Kane."
Victor raised both hands.
"Rahman."
"You joined Hollow Crown."
"You disappeared."
"Not an excuse."
"I wasn’t making one."
Arin walked between them.
"Later."
Both looked at him.
He pointed toward the floor.
"Chamber."
Aisha nodded.
Aldric did not.
"There is no chamber."
Aisha walked toward the massive wooden desk.
"Help me move this."
Arin grabbed one side.
Aldric stared.
"That desk belonged to your grandfather."
Arin looked at him.
"He won’t complain."
Victor coughed to hide a laugh.
Together, they moved it.
Aisha crouched.
Ran her fingers across the stone floor.
Then pressed one particular section.
Nothing happened.
She frowned.
"Your turn."
Arin looked down.
"What am I supposed to do?"
"Founder thing."
"Very technical."
"Thanks."
Arin placed his Authority Band against the stone.
Nothing.
Then:
> LEGACY STRUCTURE DETECTED.
OWNERSHIP:
NONE.
ACCESS REQUIREMENT:
PLAYER TWO.
Silence.
Aisha saw his expression.
"What?"
"It wants Player Two."
"Exactly."
"I don’t know how to access it."
Aisha looked toward his chest.
"Maybe you don’t."
Arin’s expression flattened.
"Don’t."
She raised both hands.
"Just saying."
The stone beneath them suddenly clicked.
Everyone froze.
Arin hadn’t done anything.
A black line appeared across the floor.
Then another.
The pattern formed a circle.
Victor stepped backward.
Aldric raised his sword.
The floor opened.
Cold air rose from below.
A staircase descended into darkness.
Aldric stared.
"In my study."
Aisha looked at him.
"Technically under it."
The Duke gave her a murderous look.
Arin started down.
Aldric grabbed his shoulder.
"Wait."
Arin looked back.
"You do not know what is below."
"Correct."
"And you’re going first."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Arin looked toward Victor.
Then Aisha.
"Because apparently the thing downstairs is already inside me."
Aldric had no answer to that.
Arin descended.
---
The staircase went much deeper than the estate foundations.
Ten meters.
Twenty.
Thirty.
The walls changed.
Valerius stone disappeared.
Black metallic panels replaced it.
Victor noticed immediately.
"This isn’t local."
"No."
Aisha touched the wall.
Her System flashed.
"Mine can’t identify it."
Arin’s Authority Band could.
> MATERIAL:
ELYSIUM COMPOSITE.
GENERATION:
PRE-PRIME.
Arin stopped.
Pre-Prime.
Older than Ark Prime.
Older than Cael’s civilization?
That should not be possible.
Aldric read his expression.
"What?"
"This place predates Elysium."
Aisha frowned.
"I thought Elysium was ancient."
"It is."
"That’s concerning."
"Yes."
They continued.
At the bottom waited a circular door.
No handle.
No lock.
Only two symbols.
One was familiar.
The silver tree of House Elysium.
The other was a black square containing the number:
2.
Arin approached.
His Authority Band flickered violently.
White.
Black.
White.
Black.
A voice entered his head.
Not EVE.
Not the Network.
Not his System.
A human voice.
Male.
Tired.
Finally.
Arin stopped.
Victor noticed.
"What?"
Arin raised one hand.
Silence.
The voice returned.
Fourteen.
Arin’s eyes narrowed.
"Who are you?"
Aldric looked around.
"Who are you speaking to?"
The voice laughed.
Still cautious.
Arin stepped toward the door.
"Name."
A pause.
Then:
Noah.
Arin’s heartbeat changed.
"Earth?"
Yes.
Aisha’s face sharpened.
"You hear someone?"
Arin nodded.
The voice continued.
Earth. 2041.
Arin froze.
Future.
Relative to him.
Marcus had come from 2024.
Others from different years.
Noah came from 2041.
"How long have you been here?"
The voice answered:
Long enough to regret winning.
The door opened.
Inside was a small chamber.
Almost empty.
At the center stood a chair.
Metal restraints.
Broken.
Around it were hundreds of black fragments.
System Core pieces.
Aisha stopped breathing.
Victor whispered:
"Jesus."
Arin walked inside.
The moment he crossed the threshold, the world disappeared.
---
He stood somewhere else.
White space.
No walls.
No floor.
No sky.
A man sat in front of him.
Perhaps thirty.
Black hair.
Gray shirt.
Jeans.
Completely ordinary.
No armor.
No magic.
No weapons.
The man looked at Arin.
Then smiled tiredly.
"Hello, Fourteen."
Arin looked around.
"Memory?"
"Close."
"System space?"
"Closer."
"Are you Noah?"
"What’s left of him."
Arin stared.
"Player Two?"
Noah’s smile disappeared.
"No."
Good.
"Then what is?"
Noah leaned forward.
"The prize."
Arin’s expression hardened.
"Explain."
"The first Player Network wasn’t designed to send people here."
"Then what was it designed for?"
"Finding someone."
"Who?"
Noah looked directly at him.
"The person capable of surviving every System."
Silence.
Arin didn’t like where this was going.
Noah continued.
"Combat Systems failed."
Images appeared around them.
Dead Players.
"Magic Systems failed."
More bodies.
"Kingdom Systems."
Ruined cities.
"Crafting Systems."
Destroyed settlements.
"Necromancer Systems."
Arin thought of Elena.
"Every System tested something different."
Arin’s eyes narrowed.
"Tested."
Noah nodded.
"Adaptability."
Images accelerated.
Players fighting.
Building.
Surviving.
Betraying.
Cooperating.
Dying.
"Why?"
"Because the Network needed a host."
There it was.
"For Player Two."
"No."
Noah stood.
"For what Player Two contains."
A black sphere appeared between them.
Tiny.
Almost harmless-looking.
Arin stared.
"What is it?"
Noah’s voice became quiet.
"The Administrator Key."
Arin said nothing.
"It can override Player Systems."
That explained the bounty.
"Rewrite quests."
Arin’s eyes narrowed.
"Transfer abilities."
Marcus.
Edwin.
Victor.
"Destroy System restrictions."
Elena.
"And?"
Noah looked at him.
"Create new Systems."
Silence.
That was different.
Much bigger.
Arin stared at the sphere.
"Why call it Player Two?"
"Because I was Player Two."
Arin looked at him.
Noah smiled bitterly.
"Originally."
There.
"The Network put the Key inside you?"
"No."
Noah shook his head.
"I stole it."
Arin almost smiled.
"Better."
"Don’t congratulate me."
The images changed.
Cities burning.
Players killing one another.
Black interfaces covering the sky.
"I thought I could end the game."
"What happened?"
"I won."
Arin frowned.
Noah laughed without humor.
"That’s the problem."
The black sphere expanded.
"The moment I gained the Key, the Network stopped treating me as a Player."
Arin remembered the bounty wording.
Host survival optional.
"It classified you as a container."
"Exactly."
"What did you do?"
"Ran."
"Here?"
"Eventually."
Noah looked around.
"House Elysium helped hide me."
"Cael?"
"Yes."
Arin’s expression changed.
"Seraphine?"
Noah became very still.
"She wanted the Key."
Of course.
"Why?"
"To control every System-connected civilization."
That sounded exactly like her.
"Prime Fall?"
Noah nodded.
"Was me."
Silence.
Arin stared.
"You caused it?"
"I triggered it."
"Difference?"
"Not enough."
At least he admitted it.
Noah continued.
"When the Network found me, Cael sealed the Ark."
"The signal."
"Was the Network searching."
"Cities disappeared."
"Extracted."
Arin’s expression became cold.
"People?"
"Some."
"How many?"
Noah looked away.
"Millions."
Silence.
Arin let that sit.
No dramatic reaction.
No shouting.
Just information.
Terrible information.
Useful information.
"What happened to you?"
"Cael separated me from the Key."
"How?"
Noah smiled.
"Almost killed both of us."
"And the Key?"
"Hidden."
Arin already knew.
"Inside me."
"No."
Arin stopped.
Noah looked directly at him.
"That’s what the Network thinks."
Interesting.
"What is inside me?"
"A pointer."
Arin stared.
"A what?"
"A route."
Noah smiled for the first time with genuine amusement.
"Congratulations."
"You were turned into a treasure map."
Arin’s expression flattened.
"I preferred container."
Noah laughed.
"Cael fragmented the Key."
Images appeared.
Fourteen pieces.
Arin’s eyes narrowed.
"Fourteen."
"Yes."
"Founder numbers."
Noah nodded.
"Each Founder carried one route fragment."
Arin understood.
"Founder Fourteen is the final route."
"Exactly."
"Then Player Two isn’t inside me."
"No."
"The route to the Key is."
"Yes."
Arin exhaled.
That was significantly better.
Still terrible.
But better.
"Where is the Key?"
Noah’s expression became serious.
"I don’t know."
Arin stared.
"You are remarkably unhelpful for a dead man living in my basement."
Noah laughed again.
"I like you."
"Don’t."
"Fair."
The white world began flickering.
Time ending.
Arin stepped closer.
"How do I remove the route?"
Noah’s smile disappeared.
"You can’t."
"How do I hide it?"
"You already are."
"Elysium?"
"Partly."
"What else?"
Noah looked toward Arin’s chest.
"Something changed you when you arrived."
Arin frowned.
"My System?"
"No."
"Then what?"
"I can’t see it."
The world flickered harder.
Noah spoke quickly.
"The Network thinks you’re Player Two because the route fragment is active."
"How do I deactivate it?"
"You don’t."
"Stop saying that."
"You need to finish the route."
Arin’s expression hardened.
"And find the Key."
"Yes."
"Then destroy it?"
Noah hesitated.
That was bad.
"Can it be destroyed?"
"I don’t know."
Of course.
The white world began collapsing.
Noah stepped backward.
"Fourteen."
"What?"
"Do not claim Civilization Authority."
Arin froze.
"I already rejected it."
Noah stared.
Then slowly smiled.
"Good."
"Why?"
"Because Civilization Authority was never an Elysium upgrade."
Arin felt cold.
"What?"
Noah’s body began dissolving.
"The Network added it."
Arin’s expression changed completely.
Noah’s final words echoed through the collapsing space.
"It has been trying to make a new Player Two for centuries."
---
Arin woke on the chamber floor.
He inhaled sharply.
Victor crouched nearby.
Aisha stood over him.
Aldric had his sword drawn toward absolutely nothing useful.
Arin sat up.
"How long?"
Aisha answered.
"Twenty seconds."
Felt longer.
Victor helped him stand.
"What happened?"
Arin looked toward the chair.
The black fragments around it were glowing.
Then his Authority Band activated.
> LEGACY ROUTE VERIFIED.
FOUNDER FOURTEEN RECOGNIZED.
FINAL ROUTE FRAGMENT AVAILABLE.
Aisha’s System began screaming warnings.
Victor’s did the same.
Arin stared.
A compartment opened beneath the ancient chair.
Something rose.
Not a weapon.
Not armor.
A small silver object.
A key.
Ordinary-looking.
Arin did not touch it.
Good instincts.
His System identified it.
> ROUTE KEY 14.
FUNCTION:
REVEALS LOCATION OF ADMINISTRATOR KEY WHEN COMBINED WITH ROUTE KEYS 1–13.
Victor stared.
"Thirteen more."
Arin nodded.
Aisha’s face tightened.
"Where?"
Before Arin could answer, the chamber activated.
A world map appeared.
Thirteen lights.
Scattered across kingdoms.
Ruins.
Monster territories.
Guild capitals.
One beneath the Royal Palace.
One inside Hollow Crown territory.
One—
Arin froze.
House Elysium.
Deep beneath Ark Prime.
And the final marker was moving.
Victor noticed.
"Why is one moving?"
Aisha’s expression changed.
"Because it’s not in a building."
The map zoomed.
A person.
Traveling rapidly toward House Elysium.
Arin’s Authority Band identified the signature.
> ROUTE KEY HOLDER 7:
UNKNOWN.
Then EVE’s emergency communication broke through.
"Founder!"
Arin looked up.
"EVE."
"Perimeter breach."
His expression hardened.
"Player?"
"No."
"Guild?"
"No."
"Hollow Crown?"
"Negative."
"Then what?"
EVE paused.
When she answered, even her artificial voice sounded uncertain.
"A girl."
Arin frowned.
"Age?"
"Approximately eleven."
Silence.
"Threat?"
"Unknown."
"Weapon?"
"None."
"System?"
Another pause.
"None detected."
Arin stared at the moving Route Key marker.
It had stopped.
Directly outside Elysium.
EVE continued.
"Founder... she is requesting you by name."
Arin’s eyes narrowed.
"What did she say?"
A projection appeared.
A small girl stood outside the mountain.
Barefoot.
Dirty clothes.
Silver hair.
One eye black.
The other glowing white.
She looked directly toward the hidden camera.
Then smiled.
"Tell Arin I brought something that belongs to him."
She opened her hand.
A silver key rested on her palm.
Route Key Seven.
Then the girl looked past the camera, toward the hidden city no ordinary person should have been able to see.
Her smile vanished.
And she whispered:
"Also tell him Seraphine knows where his little sister is."
