Chapter 345: Skill Upgrade Tokens

Violet relaxed on the sofa in the greeting room of her and Luna’s suit. Elizabeth, the snow leopardkin maid, leaned down and refilled the cup of tea that was sitting in front of her before stepping backwards away from the table.

Violet smiled at the older woman then returned to pondering her status screen, specifically at the list of her skills and the few ones that were max level and able to be upgraded.

Looking through the list she frowned slightly as she realised that whilst she did have 4 skills that could be upgraded, she only really used 2 of them.

Those being runic magic and void beam. Both pounce and tail whip were fairly redundant skills that she saw no real use for.

Sure tail whip had its used when she fought up close, but she was a mage at heart, fighting up close should be reserved for when she is either out of magic, or if she messed up and had no other choice.

As such she had no real desire to chose either of those skills to upgrade. That in turn left her with 2 skills, one of which she was greatly looking forwards to upgrading and seeing what new aspects of the skill she could unlock.

Still she waited, knowing that Luna would want to be here when she upgraded her skills.

Thankfully her companion did not make her wait all too long, soon enough she entered through the door and smiled at both Violet and Elizabeth.

"Finally! You took forever!" Violet complained, even though she knew that Luna had arrived at exactly the time she stated she would be free, still, Violet was practically bouncing with excitement to upgrade her skills and didn’t want to wait any longer.

Luna chuckled at her companions antics and plopped down on the sofa besides her. She smiled as a fresh cup of tea was poured by the maid, then spoke up.

"Thank you Elizabeth, you can return to your other duties. We will be busy for the foreseeable future and will reach out if anything is needed."

"Of course my ladies. Have a good day." Elizabeth promptly replied with a small curtsy before retreating from the room and closing the door behind her.

Once the door clicked shut Violet turned excitedly towards Luna. "Can we do it now!?"

Luna looked at her overexcited companions and let out a gentle chuckle as she wrapped her fingers around Violet’s own. "Sure, which skill are you going to upgrade first?" She asked.

Violet’s smile seemed to grow even wider when Luna held her hand, then she rushed through her explanation as she simultaneously opened her system screen and went to work upgrading her skill. "I’m going with void beam first, then runic magic!"

And as she said the system responded to her desire.

Violet eagerly looked through the options, instantly finding the first one to be quite intriguing. Void thread turned the beam attack into a more physical thing that could be actively manipulated, it could be used to ensnare and tie down foes whilst also cutting into them. Or to set up traps or even in utility aspects by aiding in mobility.

She saw a lot of potential with this option, granted though it did seem to lower its innate ability to deal pure damage, but Violet didn’t necessarily see that as a downside.

The second option didn’t really interest Violet all that much, it just caused the beam to be a bit bigger and do a bit more damage, it didn’t add anything new to the skill that she was interested in, as such she turned to the final option.

Whilst simple this one did provide something new, it would allow her to do a couple of new things. First she could fire off multiple beams at once instead of just the singular she could currently do. Secondly she could manually ’shatter’ the void beam at any point to cause secondary beams to shoot out in all directions at the point of shattering.

This option truly went down the damaging route and could prove a great benefit in her combat potential.

Still Violet felt more affinity to one option there and without much additional though she selected it.

Violet smiled at that, but didn’t felt at all she she instantly moved into her next ability.

With glee clear in her eyes she dove into the upgrades as she sought out exactly what these options would provide.

Void runes was both simple yet effective. It would alter the trajectory of her runes, focusing more on the void and less on generalised magic. Not much would change with the skill as a whole, but she would undoubtedly find it easier to create and manipulate runes with this option.

However it was the other two options that truly caught Violet’s attention. Runic Architect seemed to come from her construction of her pseudo domain using runes. It would focus her runic magic into the construction of things, be that complex magic effects or towards actual permanent enchantments.

It would enable her to fortify a location or structure, or create a complex trap. Yet it would lag behind in providing real time benefits during combat if she didn’t have time to prepare.

Runic Erudite on the other hand seemed to take things in the opposite direction. Instead of focusing on permanent enchantments and preparation, this final option instead focused on complex and immediate runic formations that could be rapidly deployed. This provided her greater flexibility in the moment to moment, yet would lack when directed towards long term objectives.

She was conflicted for some time, she had quickly dismissed the first option, focusing on the last two. Yet from the moment she read the names of the options, she already knew which one she wanted, call it her draconic pride but she simply couldn’t turn down the option she chose.

As Violet was absorbed in her upgrading skills, Luna was doing much the same. She looked through her skill list to identify her potential upgrade choices.

She had 4 options to choose from, one of which was the skill that was her pseudo domain skill. Yet when she considered upgrading it she had a sudden and intense feeling that doing so would be a terrible idea.

Luna pondered that thought, wondering why that could be a bad idea for some time, then she suddenly understood.

Her Arctic Manifestation was already her domain, or at least it would be. She had already known how she wanted her domain to develop and she planned to use that skill as the building block of it when the time came.

So wouldn’t changing that skill in any way so close to evolving pose some potential problems?

Well Luna certainly though that could be the case. Plus her instincts practically screamed at her to not do so, it was slightly off putting having such intense instincts, even after so long since becoming a true beast Luna was still finding herself surprised at various aspects of being one.

Her instincts were one such aspect. Whilst as a bestkin she did have more potent instincts than, say a human due to her beast blood. Now that she was a true beast those previously ’mild’ instincts had grown and developed into a much more potent ability.

The only reason she didn’t always act on them was that she had experienced more of her life without them, as such she was able to better contain her own instincts. Unlike a certain dragon she knew who fairly often found herself giving in to her own instincts, particularly when it came towards food.
