Accidentally Pregnant With The Billionaire Heir

Chapter 182 - 181 The Misunderstanding Deepens

( ALISTAIR )

Violence, when executed with absolute precision, is a terrifyingly beautiful thing.

I sit in the back of my armored sedan, the quiet interior insulating me from the chaotic evening traffic of Asuir City. A sleek, transparent data tablet rests in my hands, the glowing screen providing the only light in the dark cabin. I watch the security footage from the sidewalk outside Bordeaux 101 for the fourth consecutive time.

The audio is crisp, captured flawlessly by Leo’s concealed microphone. Naya Zone screeches her insults, her heavily contoured face twisted into an ugly mask of entitlement. She points her manicured finger, spewing venom about my marriage and my unborn child.

Then, Emily moves.

She does not recoil. She does not look to Leo for protection. Her right arm swings back, and the subsequent impact echoes through the small tablet speaker with a sharp, definitive crack. The force of the blow sends Naya stumbling sideways, her expensive stiletto catching on the concrete.

I pause the video, freezing the frame on Emily’s face. Her dark eyes are cold, hard, and utterly unapologetic.

I lean back against the plush leather seating, analyzing the sequence of events. Three highly unexpected anomalies occurred during this brief altercation.

First, Naya Zone recognized Emily on sight. Emily does not attend high-society galas. She does not feature in the tabloid magazines covering the Wolfe Empire. The only logical explanation traces back to the charity event weeks ago. Naya snatched my encrypted mobile phone, attempting to invade my privacy. She must have seen the photograph Warren Sinclair sent me—the image of Emily sitting across from Victor Sterling. Naya’s jealousy is a predictable, pathetic trait, but her memory for faces is unfortunately sharp.

Second, the black Bordeaux 101 VIP card. Warren Sinclair handed the absolute highest tier of Azure Syndicate protection to a woman he barely knows. To an outsider, it looks like an insane breach of underground protocol. To me, it is a transparent recruitment tactic. Warren wants Emily to accept the position of Deputy Leader within the Syndicate. He is dangling ultimate authority in front of her, testing her appetite for power. It does not surprise me in the slightest.

Third, and most importantly, the slap itself.

I zoom in on Emily’s posture in the frozen video frame. Her shoulders are relaxed. Her weight is perfectly balanced. This was not a wild, impulsive lash-out born of uncontrollable rage. Emily is far too intelligent for that. She calculated the variables in a fraction of a second. She knew the restaurant’s security cameras were recording. She knew Naya initiated the verbal assault and invaded her personal space. She knew a single, devastating physical strike would completely shatter Naya’s fragile ego without crossing the line into a prolonged, illegal brawl.

It was a masterclass in establishing dominance.

I tap the screen, exiting the video player and opening my encrypted messaging application. Naya Zone is a coward when faced with direct confrontation, but cowards excel at orchestrating sabotage from the shadows.

Keep her in your line of sight at all times, I type, directing the message to Leo. Miss Zone will not let this drop. Do not allow anyone to approach the new storefront without a thorough screening.

I lock the tablet and toss it onto the empty leather seat beside me.

I rub the back of my neck, feeling the rigid tension coiled tight in my muscles. The woman in the video is a fierce, unyielding force of nature. She takes down local thugs and slaps politicians’ daughters without batting an eye.

Yet, an entirely different image forces its way into my mind.

Just twenty-four hours ago, that same fierce woman woke up screaming in the dead of night. I remember the raw, primal terror in her voice as she cried out for her mother. I remember the violent trembling of her slender frame when she threw herself into my arms, burying her tear-soaked face into my chest. She was completely broken, reduced to a terrified child seeking shelter from a nightmare I do not understand.

The contrast between the two versions of Emily Vance creates a sharp, twisting ache in the center of my skull. What kind of horrors did she survive to build such impenetrable armor? What exact trauma hides behind her cold, calculating exterior?

I need to know. I need to dismantle the nightmare that haunts her, but I cannot interrogate her without pushing her further away.

The sedan slows, the tires crunching over the immaculate gravel driveway of the Wolfe Estate. The vehicle comes to a smooth halt in front of the grand entrance. My driver cuts the engine, the sudden silence hanging heavy in the cabin.

The driver steps out to open my door.

"Wait," I command.

He freezes instantly, stepping back and closing his hands in front of his belt.

I stay seated in the dark, air-conditioned interior. I stare at the massive oak doors of the villa. Five minutes. I need five minutes to completely bury the protective, violent urges surging through my bloodstream. If I walk into that master bedroom right now, I will demand answers. I will cross the boundaries of our contractual arrangement. I will pull her into my arms just to prove to myself that she is safe.

I cannot do that. I belong to the memory of Kiki. Emily is the mother of my heir. Any deviation from those established parameters will only result in absolute chaos.

I take a slow, measured breath, forcing my heart rate to drop. I smooth the lapels of my tailored suit jacket, constructing my mask of icy indifference.

I push the car door open and step out into the humid night air.

( EMILY )

The silk nightgown clings to my damp skin. I sit on the edge of the oversized mattress in the master bedroom, dragging a wooden comb through my wet hair.

The air conditioning blows a steady stream of cold air across my bare shoulders, but my cheeks feel incredibly hot. Every time I close my eyes, the memory of last night replays with agonizing clarity.

I cried. I actually broke down and sobbed into Alistair Wolfe’s chest. I begged him to hold me, wrapping my arms around his waist like a frightened, pathetic child. The sheer level of vulnerability makes my stomach churn with intense embarrassment. I spent years building a fortress around my emotions to survive my father and my stepmother. I do not rely on men for comfort. I especially do not rely on the cold, calculating CEO of the Wolfe Empire.

I toss the wooden comb onto the bedside table.

I need to re-establish the baseline of our relationship. I need to prove to him—and to myself—that last night was an isolated medical anomaly, a momentary lapse in judgment triggered by a nightmare. We are business partners bound by a contract. Nothing more.

I glance toward my large leather suitcase tucked in the corner of the walk-in closet.

Buried at the very bottom, beneath a stack of folded sweaters, sits the small brown glass bottle of sleep-aid essential oil. I rescued it from the trash can. Alistair threw it away. He discarded my handmade remedy, actively rejecting my attempt at simple courtesy.

A plan forms in my mind. A simple, direct test. If I ask him for the oil, I will force him to acknowledge his action. I want to see if he will admit he threw it in the garbage, or if he will try to evade the confrontation.

The heavy brass handle of the bedroom door clicks.

My spine goes rigid. I stay seated on the edge of the mattress as the door swings open.

Alistair steps into the room. He looks towering and imposing in his dark charcoal suit. He shrugs off the jacket, draping it over the back of a velvet armchair near the window. He rolls his broad shoulders, his white dress shirt pulling tight across his chest. He smells of expensive cologne, crisp night air, and the faint, metallic scent of the city.

He turns toward me. The silence in the bedroom stretches, thick and suffocating.

I shift my weight, preparing to speak.

As I move, the thin silk strap of my nightgown slides off my left shoulder. It drops down my arm, exposing the pale curve of my collarbone. Beneath the falling silk, the bright pink strap of my bra is suddenly entirely visible, a sharp, glaring contrast against my pale skin.

Alistair stops walking.

His eyes drop instantly to my exposed shoulder. The cold, indifferent mask he usually wears fractures for a fraction of a second. I watch the muscles in his jaw clench tight. A sudden, heavy heat floods the room, making the air feel incredibly dense. He stares at the pink strap, his chest rising and falling with a slightly sharper rhythm.

My breath catches in my throat. I quickly reach up, hooking a finger under the silk fabric and pulling the nightgown strap back into place over my shoulder.

Alistair blinks, ripping his gaze away from my collarbone. He looks toward the large bay windows, his jaw still set in a hard, rigid line. He shoves one hand into his trouser pocket, deliberately keeping his distance.

The awkwardness is completely unbearable. I clear my throat, forcing myself to push through the heavy tension.

"You’re back late," I say, keeping my voice mild and conversational.

"I had matters to conclude at the laboratory," Alistair replies. His tone is completely flat. He does not look at me.

I fold my hands in my lap, digging my fingernails slightly into my palms to maintain my composure. It is time to run the test.

"I am actually having a lot of trouble sleeping tonight," I say, watching his profile carefully. "I think the adrenaline from the day hasn’t worn off. Do you happen to have that small bottle of sleep-aid essential oil I gave you? I could really use it."

Alistair goes perfectly still.

He slowly turns his head, meeting my eyes. I search his expression for a trace of guilt, a hint of awkward realization. He threw it in the trash. I know he threw it in the trash, because I am the one who pulled it out of the garbage bag.

Alistair holds my gaze with absolute, unyielding calm.

"I don’t have it," he says smoothly.

"You don’t?" I raise an eyebrow, feigning mild surprise. "Did you misplace it?"

"I left it behind," Alistair replies, his voice lacking even a single tremor of hesitation. "During my recent business trip to the Aethelred branch. I unpacked it at the hotel in Aethelred and forgot to put it back in my luggage before the return flight. It is gone."

A sharp, stinging sensation hits the center of my chest.

He lied.

He looked me dead in the eye, without a single flinch, and fabricated an entire story about leaving it overseas. He doesn’t just want to reject my courtesy; he wants to completely erase the interaction while maintaining his flawless facade of polite indifference.

He despises my attempts to bridge the gap between us. He threw my gift in the garbage, and now he is lying straight to my face just to avoid admitting how little he values my presence in his life.

I nod slowly, a cold, bitter smile touching the corners of my mouth.

"I see," I say, my tone dropping into the same icy register he uses. "That is a shame. I suppose I will just have to manage without it."

"I can have Jackson purchase a commercial sleep aid for you in the morning," Alistair offers, his posture remaining rigid and distant.

"Don’t bother," I reply sharply. I pull the heavy duvet back and slide into the massive bed, turning my back to him. "I prefer to handle my own problems."

I pull the blankets up to my chin, staring at the dark wallpaper on the far side of the room. The space between us feels wider than an ocean.

He lied to protect his pride. I asked the question to prove he doesn’t care. We are both sitting in the same room, building a massive, impenetrable wall of misunderstanding out of our own stubborn refusal to tell the truth.

I close my eyes, listening to the heavy sound of his footsteps moving toward the walk-in closet. The isolation is suffocating, but it is exactly what I signed up for.
