Chapter 636: Chapter 635: Welcome to Avalon’s Shop
"Hey, you sneaky bastard! You ran off."
Pah!
A sharp sound rang out as a long whip appeared.
The instant the whip appeared, the beast’s aura seemed to disappear as it shrank to about a meter in height. Its body trembled as it bowed to the ground.
Then, a white-haired man appeared. He was dressed casually, with black shades covering his eyes. He had various rings around his fingers, plus a pure golden, gaudy watch on his wrist.
He looked like a businessman dressed in casual wear. His gaze was stern, but a smile rested on his face as he walked toward Cisa, who was injured and mentally and physically exhausted.
Cisa’s mind raced as he looked at this strange human. What made him strange was that the beast he had just seen wasn’t a weak one.
It was stronger than anyone Cisa had ever seen and belonged to the Calamity-class beasts that could easily destroy their cities. Yet, thanks to a single whip from this human, such a beast had shrunk in size and was quivering in fear.
Who exactly was this human? Where exactly was he?
"Cisa, was it?" Nephem spoke first, causing Cisa to feel goosebumps all over as he took several steps forward.
He was sure he had never seen this man before, so how did he know his name?
The man’s strangeness had turned into a mystery that Cisa was scared to unravel.
"Who... who are you?" Cisa gulped as he asked.
Seeing this, Nephem chuckled.
"You are our guest. We have been expecting you. Don’t worry; if we wanted to harm you, we would have done it already." Nephem paused as Cisa digested his words.
If he hadn’t encountered the beast first, he might have doubted him. However, he had tamed a Calamity-class beast. His strength was something Cisa couldn’t comprehend at this moment. And had he just said "we"?
As in, there were others?
Cisa looked around, which caught Nephem’s attention.
"Follow me."
Nephem left those words as a chain materialized in his palm and wrapped around the neck of the shrunken beast, which gave Cisa a look of pity, as though asking him for help.
This frightened Cisa so much that his legs wobbled, and he almost fell.
What the hell did this beast want him to do? Didn’t it know how strong this white-haired man was? Wasn’t that suicide?
But now, in a new area of the forest, having encountered a Calamity-class beast while still being chased around, Cisa had no choice but to follow this strange man who seemed to know him.
Soon, they left the forest and entered an open space where a small shop could be seen.
It was nowhere near desolate or ruined. Instead, it looked like a decent shop, especially considering that the only things around were animals.
They looked like normal pets, from dogs to cats, pet tortoises to pet eagles. It was only when he looked at the beast the white-haired man had tied down that his mind seemed to jolt awake as he looked at the animals again.
Could it be that they were all Calamity-class beasts?
No, impossible.
Cisa shook his head to get rid of those thoughts.
"I will come back to you later," Nephem threatened as the beast quivered while the other beasts looked at it with pity.
"Come in. Don’t mind the small shop," Nephem said with a smile, and Cisa nodded.
Mind it? Please, even if it were a sewage system, he would enter at this moment. He felt genuine fear toward the white-haired man. His strength was probably earth-shattering.
Then, he followed him inside, glancing at the pets that turned their heads to look at him.
Each gaze made his body grow cold with sweat.
"Wait, don’t tell me you are all Calamity-level beasts?"
With that thought, Cisa entered the shop and witnessed another astonishing scene.
The outside really did no justice to it. Its size was outstanding, to say the least.
Shelves upon shelves were filled with mysterious substances. The clean floor was carved from one of the rarest materials he had ever seen.
It looked modern and cosmic at the same time, as he saw pictures and painted works of the universe all around. There was even a window that showed outer space.
He also found two other people inside. One was a black-haired man wearing traditional long clothing with a sword around his waist. He took care of the shop meticulously, while the second was a very handsome man, more handsome than anyone Cisa had ever seen.
But he... was asleep.
With Cisa’s arrival, the two looked at him. The dark-haired man with the sword merely glanced at him, nodded to Nephem, and continued his work. Meanwhile, the other opened one eye sleepily, then closed it again.
Cisa felt strange. The one sleeping felt like a normal human to him, while the one with the sword gave him a dangerous feeling.
"So, Cisa..."
Just then, Nephem spoke from the side, breaking him out of his thoughts.
"Welcome to Avalon," Nephem began.
"Basically, this is a shop that can give you anything, from power that can kill your enemies to world-ending strength. You can also obtain bloodlines powerful enough to terrify existence and all that. But, of course, nothing is free."
Nephem paused as he brought out the Scales of Equivalent Exchange, an exclusive artifact in the shop of Avalon that had two sides.
Only when the two sides were balanced could a trade take place.
At first, Cisa was excited. He felt he had found a way out of his situation, but, of course, nothing was free.
He clenched his fist, and it was at this moment that he realized his wounds and injuries seemed to have frozen in time. He felt no pain whatsoever.
It was a frightening discovery, but at the same time, it revealed the mystery surrounding this shop.
"All you need to do is say what you want, and these scales will determine what you must give in return, something of equal value. It varies for different people, of course. So, if you are lucky, it might be something you can let go of. But depending on what exactly you want... you might have to sacrifice much more..."
Nephem paused as he walked to the counter and leaned against it.
"So, tell me, Cisa. In front of you is a chance to change your future. Become a warrior, a protector, and save your family. All those dreams you have can be accomplish, each and every one of them. So, tell me, will you take this chance or let it go? Let go of the chance to become someone this world will one day bow before?"
Nephem posed the question as Cisa felt his heart tremble.
A chance?
If he could gain the power of a warrior, his father wouldn’t have to suffer being beaten all the time, and he would be able to pay off the loan. He could survive the chase and become somebody in this world.
No, he was thinking too small.
He might become even more than a warrior. He might gain enough power to control this city... the Human Government? No, he might gain enough power to rule over the world.
But it all came down to what he could afford to lose.
What would it be?
What did he want exactly?
"I..."
