Chapter 378: Cannot Hear It?

“Teacher…” Lily started.

“I couldn’t understand a word that you said; everything was gibberish after you said there was no harm in telling us.” The others also nodded at Lily’s words; it was the same for them.

But Miho, from the side, also spoke up.

“T-teacher, I couldn’t hear a word from the start… after you mentioned Biological…? Eh? I cannot recall what you said.”

Katherine looked at Miho with a warm smile.

“You are still too weak to know things, my dear. As for the reason you couldn’t hear anything–”

“–it’s because I temporarily blocked your hearing abilities,” Katherine said calmly.

“Eh? Why?” Miho asked, startled, unconsciously touching her ears.

“Because you would have been severely injured, or worse, even died if you had heard my words.”

Hearing her, all of them were startled.

“Auntie, how?” Kaelion asked, his expression turning serious.

Katherine shook her head slowly.

“K, you still haven’t seen the real world, and how cruel and twisted it is. I cannot say most things since you people are far too weak even to handle the weight of my word. But I will say one thing: the world is very secretive about its mechanisms. So don’t try to dig into things that can swallow you whole. Keep this in mind.” She looked at Leo, who was silently contemplating her words.

Seeing that she was looking straight at him, he spoke up.

“Is it related to the fact that I find many books unreadable and even outright blank on the 5th floor of the library?”

Katherine nodded.

“Students,” she said, now fully in her professor mode.

“This new world is very friendly when it comes to communication among different races,” she said, glancing at Sylrael.

“Though our dialects, languages, and words may be different, the world takes it upon itself so that we can understand whatever another person is saying. This elf’s language is nowhere close to ours since she belongs to a different world, but you understand her clearly. How so? Because it’s the world doing the job. Now, we have a common tongue and language. This is to aid us in survival. But…” She paused deliberately.

“The World also has the capability to block any information that’s not meant for you. No—’meant’ is the wrong word; you are simply not capable of holding that information within your being yet. The moment that information enters your body, your system collapses. And this is what would have happened to our dear Miho. But if the information is just slightly above your level—that is, your being is somewhat capable of defending itself—you will hear gibberish, just like you did right now.”

“This is your body trying to save itself, so whatever information you were about to receive becomes incomprehensible and incoherent. The information simply passes through your head without meaning, and that saves you from potential death or injury.”

At that moment, Brant opened his eyes again.

“You’ve got to make your vessel capable of processing and storing that information, and once again, for that, you need to grow strong.”

He received another light slap, which prompted him to sleep again—or at least pretend to.

“Don’t disturb my class,” she continued.

“And this is done so you understand how strong you need to become to access this information. I am sure Lily might have heard it much more clearly than Tavian.”

Tavian nodded.

“I almost heard nothing, like this girl said. Just a tidbit of gibberish.”

“This simply means you have a larger distance to cover than Lily.”

Tavian nodded again, his face already lost in thought.

“No wonder Grandfather would always distract me with something else when I asked him certain things.”

Kaelion also nodded. He seemed to have had experiences similar to Tavian.

Katherine then turned toward Kaelion.

“I would have loved to give you very good news, but you can’t even hear this…” she said.

“I couldn’t understand it…” Kaelion replied.

Katherine nodded.

“What I was saying would have given you an idea… ah.”

Kaelion still wasn’t able to understand her, since it would have given him an idea of something he wasn’t supposed to know yet.

“You will know as you grow stronger. Just quickly reach Peak 6-stars,” Brant said.

Brant received another slap, after which he closed his eyes and slept again.

“But if these things cannot be passed down normally, then how did most people come to know or discover them? A person focused on growing strong cannot uncover secrets about many things other than growing strong,” Leo asked. This was an entirely new and absurd concept to him.

“This is why researchers are important. A finding made by a low-ranked researcher, even if it is about higher-level information, can still be accessed by them. This is because research acts like tempering the researcher’s being for that specific information. With this, the high-level information compiled by the low-ranked researcher can later be read by a higher-ranked individual who is focused on growing strong. This is how the current world is progressing.”

“Yes, it’s slow. But progress is there.”

Hearing her, Kaelion suddenly remembered the incident when his father had violently vomited blood after telling him something about choosing the correct choice.

Did he take the attack, or whatever it was, on himself? Because I should have been the one receiving it at that time…

Kaelion knew those words were not ordinary, and he had felt confused about them even now. But his father had managed to bypass the muting and injuring effect and told him anyway. And right after that—one of the strongest individuals—he vomited blood so violently it felt like he would die, just from saying a few words.

What the fuck is going on in the world…

Kaelion’s thoughts seemed to resonate with everybody present in the room. Is the world itself blocking certain information? What could be the possible reason behind that?

Yes, a lower-ranked being might be killed. But how could just some hobo of information passed through word or mouth, be capable of killing someone?

It just didn’t make sense.
