Chapter 234: Array Master And 3 Ls
Tavian still hadn’t moved a single inch from his position, and Lyra still hadn’t managed to touch him even once. And it seemed he had no intention of letting her get close at all, because suddenly, 6 magic circles flared into existence beneath the raptor’s feet.
“3-star Detonation Array,” he said calmly.
All 6 magic circles detonated at once, exploding like buried landmines beneath the beast.
Boom—boo—boombboom—BOOM!
The raptor let out a shrill screech as the ground erupted beneath it. Its footing gave way, and after stumbling violently, it crashed onto the arena floor with light but visible injuries. It was obvious that despite Tavian’s overwhelming area control, the actual damage remained small.
Before any new detonation arrays could fully form, Lyra lunged forward, her entire body crackling with violent arcs of electricity.
Tavian stood directly in her path—but the moment her sword slashed forward, his figure dissolved like mist.
Her blade cut through empty air.
In the next instant, Tavian reappeared behind her and hurled the projected chains again. This time, 2 chains shot toward the raptor, while the third curved sharply toward Lyra herself.
Her sword crackled violently as she reacted on instinct, slicing through the incoming chain. The projection split cleanly in half before dispersing into glowing fragments.
Krraaaakkk!
Yet the raptor was not so fortunate.
Already disoriented and trapped within layers of illusion, its limited intelligence failed to determine the true direction of the chains. To its senses, it felt as though thousands of spinning chains were closing in from every angle. The illusion array beneath the ring remained perpetually active, distorting perception with ruthless precision.
Moments later, another detonation array flared.
BOOM!
The beast screeched again as the explosion tore into it, forcing another injury, this time a bit heavier.
Tavian moved like a phantom after that.
He dodged Lyra’s relentless lunges with sharp, efficient steps, circling the ring while casting all 5 arrays in flawless rhythm, deploying each one at precisely the right moment. His staff tapped the ground in controlled beats, each movement at appropriate time, never wasted.
Minutes passed.
Leo and Leon both leaned forward, their expressions tightening as they focused on the battlefield. What was invisible to most spectators had become unmistakable to trained eyes.
To Leon’s High-3-star perception, it appeared faint and incomplete.
To Leo’s Low-4-star vision, it was completely clear.
“Leon… do you see it?” Leo asked quietly, his gaze never leaving the ring.
Leon nodded once, equally focused.
“Is he… Is he weaving a new array right now?”
“Yes,” Leon replied. “And that’s… big.”
To the untrained eye, Tavian appeared to be merely running, evading Lyra’s relentless pursuit. But to high-ranked observers, the truth was obvious—he was following a pattern.
His movements traced the arena itself.
With subtle taps of his staff, magic circles appeared at predetermined locations, forming the corners of a triangular formation. Each circle manifested briefly before fading into near invisibility. The array was so delicately constructed that Lyra couldn’t sense it at all.
Even now, only eyes like Leo’s and Leon’s could properly perceive it.
Lily frowned from her seat. She could feel something was wrong with the battlefield, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t pinpoint what it was.
The match dragged on.
The raptor looked heavily injured now, scorched feathers and cracked metallic plumage marring its once-regal form. Yet it never ceased its assault, charging again and again with stubborn ferocity.
Lyra’s sword, meanwhile, was stained with blood—clear proof that Tavian had taken several deep cuts over the course of the battle.
Lyra clicked her tongue.
“Tch… I didn’t want to reveal this attack so early.”
She raised her sword toward the sky.
Even the raptor halted mid-motion, lifting its head instinctively.
“[Lightning Fall]!”
There were no clouds overhead, yet the air particles trembled. Molecules charged violently as static electricity surged through the arena, making hairs stand on end.
Tavian clenched his teeth.
“3-star Earth Defence Array!”
A thick bolt of lightning crashed downward.
Crackle!
An earthen wall surged up from the array, enclosing Tavian in a dome-like structure. But since the layers were more, the thinner and weaker the defence was.
Crack—BOOM!
The dome shattered.
Lightning struck through the collapsing defense, tearing across Tavian’s body. His wounds burned violently as electricity surged through him, paralyzing his muscles for a brief moment.
Leo and Leon both noticed it at the same time.
The triangular array beneath Tavian’s feet had been disrupted—its structure flickering, on the verge of collapse.
But then—
Tavian’s orange eyes flared brilliantly.
Ignoring the pain, he clenched his teeth and focused. The unstable array stilled, its collapsing lines freezing mid-disintegration. In the next instant, the formation realigned—not into a complete formation it was before, but into a closed circuit.
Leo could tell immediately that this wasn’t the staff assisting him.
This was Tavian’s own talent.
“Trinity Detonation!”
Lyra’s pupils shrank.
A blinding formation surged outward, covering the entire ring in radiant light.
Then—
BOOOOOM!
A massive explosion rocked the arena as dust and rubble were hurled skyward. Shockwaves rippled through the stands, forcing spectators to shield their eyes.
When the dust finally settled, Tavian was still standing—barely.
His body was riddled with burn marks, cuts, and bruises, smoke rising faintly from his clothes.
But—
“We have our winner!” the Host shouted triumphantly. “Tavian Gridfall wins the match with a narrow win!!”
Only then did the crowd realize that Lyra was gone.
So was her raptor.
Both had been defeated in the blast and teleported away at the moment of loss.
The arena erupted.
Cheers thundered through the stands as people processed the sheer intensity of what they had just witnessed.
“Indeed!” the Host continued loudly. “Students—even freshers—in the top 10 are a completely different breed. They are monsters. Monsters of humanity who will one day haunt beasts and demons alike!”
Leo noticed the phrasing immediately.
The Host spoke only of beasts and demons. Even though other races existed as slaves, they weren’t spoken of with the same hatred. Beasts, however, were a universal threat.
The Host wasn’t finished.
“Just think about it, people! If a dark horse born from a Life Talent is such a monster—and an 8th-ranked student whose power alone can make grown adults shiver—then imagine the others!”
His voice rose further.
“Especially the original 1st, 2nd, and 3rd ranks—whose trial scores defy the entire history of academy trials since their founding! These 3 share a peculiar similarity. None of them have been challenged. None have appeared publicly. None have revealed their faces.”
A dramatic pause.
“And all of their names start with the same letter—’L’! And just to remind you—our Emperor’s name also begins with ’L’!”
At that final remark, Leo thought he heard Leon click his tongue.
But before he could dwell on it, his attention was dragged back to the arena by the Host’s continuing announcement.
