Chapter 2910: Chapter 2911: Interrogation

The two of them were happy for a while, then inevitably grew a bit emotional.

They thought of how, back then, when Jiang Yichun was chased by killers up the mountain outside Beiyu City, Bai Ruozhu had gone out to pick firewood and bumped into him, and she ignored the danger and used her Space to save him.

He’d realized she was different right then, and it was also at that time that he understood he’d long since fallen for this woman.

At that time he still didn’t know he had a past with her, even less that Dengdeng was his flesh and blood. He’d even doubted his own inclinations—how could he have fallen for a woman who’d already borne someone else’s child?

He’d thought he must have gone mad.

But love was love; he wasn’t someone who shrank from facing himself.

Since he loved her, he loved everything about her; he liked her child as well, and that little brat was close to him. Only later did he find out he’d been hit with Wu Wanqing’s Forget-Love Poisonous Insect and forgotten that whole period—turns out she had been his wife all along, and Dengdeng his child from the start.

Those memories flashed past like a revolving lantern. It was then that his arm was severely injured; although his strength kept improving afterward and he awakened his Merfolk Bloodline, gaining the ability to control water, there were still times when he felt regret.

Now that regret was gone too.

He wrapped his arms around her, letting her lean in his embrace. The greatest stroke of luck in his life was meeting the woman in his arms. Without her, he would probably still be in the Censorate, a killing machine running through wind and rain, never thinking of the future, slowly losing himself, slowly forgetting even his own name.

It was she who made his life complete, and who took away his regrets.

"Ruozhu, in the next life, will you still be my wife?" he asked softly.

Bai Ruozhu grinned. "But in my next life I want a harem of handsome men from all under heaven. Don’t you go holding me back."

He flipped over and pinned her beneath him with one move. "A harem of handsome men? Is my wife too idle and letting her thoughts run wild? Or have I, your husband, failed to satisfy you?"

Not good, dangerous vibes!

"Humor, it’s called humor, okay?" She immediately changed her tune. "Who could compare to you? I’d have to be stupid to think about anyone else."

"Really?" Jiang Yichun gave an evil little grin. "I don’t believe you."

As he spoke he bent down, kissing her in a deep and lingering way; only after quite a while did he finally let her go.

"Hey, hey, your arm may be improving, but it’s not fully healed yet. Don’t move around recklessly, or you’ll injure it again and affect the recovery." Bai Ruozhu reminded him in displeasure.

"All right, I’ll do as you say." He rolled over to lie on the inner side of the bed, just staring at her with big, expectant eyes.

"What are you looking at? Go to sleep." she said, half amused.

Jiang Yichun’s smile was shameless. "I’ve been sleeping too much lately—I can’t fall asleep anymore."

Bai Ruozhu was speechless. "But I’m exhausted and sleepy."

"Then you sleep. I’ll just watch you." he said.

Heavens, a handsome man lying on his side, staring at her with those eyes—who could possibly sleep?

Bai Ruozhu was full of resentment, but she couldn’t fight how tired she was. After a short while, she still fell asleep.

...

Luo Family Madam was very happy staying in the Guest House, and Chushuang urged her to leave with them and go live in the Jiuli Clan’s paradise.

"I’m afraid I can’t control my abilities and will cause trouble for you." Luo Family Madam said hesitantly.

"Don’t worry, I’ll teach you. Once you practice slowly, you’ll be able to control them at will." Chushuang smiled. "You just never had anyone to guide you. When I first awakened my abilities, I also caused no end of trouble."

Luo Family Madam grew curious. "What kind of trouble?"

"I have the ability to create a Barrier, and when I was little I loved to sing. Once, I sang a song and the whole Village started yelling." Chushuang tried to hold back a laugh. "I sealed everyone in place. Apart from a few elders who could break through the Barrier, everyone else panicked."

"That’s amazing. How old were you then?" Luo Family Madam asked in surprise.

"About six or seven." Chushuang suddenly gave a bitter smile. "So I was chosen as the Saintess, and I was also the only Saintess who managed to keep them alive past the age of thirty."

As Luo Family Madam chatted with Chushuang, she learned that back then Chushuang had been captured and taken back to the Island, where those elders sliced off pieces of her flesh to eat, then used a secret technique to seal her so she couldn’t die.

Just thinking about it was terrifying. Compared to Chushuang, she felt that in all these years she’d actually been very fortunate.

After that, Tang Yin summoned Luo Family Madam. Using her ability, she allowed Tang Yin to enter a Dream and see the Tu City massacre from twenty years ago.

When Tang Yin came back to himself, his face was covered in tears. He was the supreme ruler; how could he let others see him like this?

He quickly wiped his tears clean, then asked Luo Family Madam, "Was everything in the Dream real? You didn’t make it up?"

"Although I can draw people into Dreams, what’s in the dream are things that truly happened. I can’t fabricate them; otherwise I’d be omnipotent, wouldn’t I?" Luo Family Madam replied.

Tang Yin nodded. "Good. You may go. I will see justice done for the dead commoners."

"Thank you, Your Majesty." Luo Family Madam gave a solemn bow and withdrew.

Tang Yin’s people had been investigating the assassin case all along, but still had no results. Instead, Ao Song, without meaning to, had managed to capture a Second Madam Sun.

"Your Majesty, this is the confession of Second Madam Sun." The county magistrate handed the confession to Tang Yin, who, after reading it, passed it to Jiang Yichun and Bai Ruozhu.

It stated that Second Madam Sun had been sent by the Yueqiu Tribe as a spy. If she completed her mission, she would be able to become an elder of the Holy Hall when she returned.

"Bring that Second Madam Sun and Ding Xiang here to see me." Tang Yin said.

"Yes."

Not long after, Second Madam Sun and Ding Xiang were brought up together. Both had been changed into fresh clothes beforehand, but there were still traces of wounds exposed on their arms, proving that they’d previously been subjected to interrogation by torture.

Fearing blame from the Emperor, the county magistrate had changed them into clean prison garb before presenting them.

Bai Ruozhu did not sympathize with them at all. One had poisoned a twelve-year-old boy; the other was a spy from an enemy Country—who knew how many people she had caused to die? Using torture on them was already letting them off lightly.

Tang Yin looked toward Bai Ruozhu. "You’re all women. You do the questioning."

Bai Ruozhu was helpless—Tang Yin really knew how to order her about. Oh well, he was the Emperor after all, and she was still drawing a salary from him.

"Ding Xiang, you poisoned Sun Zhou’s orphan, Sun Wen. What punishment do you deserve?" she asked sharply.

Ding Xiang shook all over in terror. "This slave—this slave didn’t know it was Poison. I thought it would just make him fall ill for a while. I didn’t know it would kill him."

As she spoke she sneaked a cautious glance at Second Madam Sun.

Second Madam Sun said calmly, "I was the one who gave her the medicine; she knew nothing. I was the one who wanted him dead. I beg Your Majesty to punish me."

"You can’t escape your own crimes. But I’m very curious—since you’re a spy, you must have had your own mission. Was it only to harm the Sun Family? Even this time, when His Majesty came to Xunyang City, you provided Poison to the killers, but who could have predicted that His Majesty would come to Xunyang City?" Bai Ruozhu asked.

Second Madam Sun made no attempt to hide it and slowly said, "The Sun Family’s Pharmacy supplied army medicinal materials to the Northern Garrison Army. Once we controlled the Sun Family, we could tamper with the medicinal materials and, at the critical moment, destroy the entire Northern Garrison Army."
