"Counselor," Seraphina Sterling said directly, "could you perhaps save the student discipline for later? Shouldn’t we get my registration processed first? I have military training tomorrow. If I can’t register, I can’t get into my dorm, and I still have to unpack."

"So this is the student you mentioned? The one who missed the registration deadline and was causing a scene at the desk?" the counselor asked, looking at the senior student behind him. ’He’s asking a question he already knows the answer to. For a mere counselor, he sure puts on a lot of airs. It seems the person pulling the strings behind this is no small fry.’

"Let me make a few corrections. First, I arrived before the registration deadline, not after. The upperclassmen refused to process my paperwork, using my supposed lateness as an excuse. Second, I wasn’t causing a scene; I was simply arguing my case. Or is there no freedom of speech at Aethelgard University? If that’s true, then Apex Premier Academy isn’t as impressive as they say!"

Seraphina Sterling wasn’t the least bit afraid of offending him. ’So what if he’s a counselor? He’s obviously in cahoots with them, just to stop me from registering successfully! I really can’t imagine who would hate me enough to cook up such a dirty scheme to use against me!’

"No matter what, the fact is you were late. The school regulations are what they are. Even though I’m the counselor for the incoming class, the rules are absolute. No one can break them, so my hands are tied. If you’re that set on attending Aethelgard University, you can try again next year. There’s no chance for you this year. If you’ve traveled from out of town, you’re welcome to stay in the university guesthouse tonight and leave tomorrow. Don’t worry about the cost—I’ll pay for it."

The counselor was so magnanimous, his attitude so friendly, his words so diplomatic. He was the very picture of a good man, full of pity and even offering to pay. Anyone who didn’t know the full story would surely sing his praises.

"So, your point is that you’re refusing to process my registration, no matter what?" Seraphina Sterling wasn’t falling for his act. ’He wants to do something rotten and still get to be the good guy? In his dreams! Does he think he gets to have his cake and eat it too?’

"Don’t be so ungrateful! The counselor has already been more than generous! What more could you possibly want? Your registration is not happening today, period. It doesn’t matter who you complain to, the outcome will be the same! Stop making things so difficult! These are the school’s regulations, not ours. The result would be the same even if the dean or the president himself showed up! Just give up! Kicking up a bigger fuss won’t change a thing!"

Perhaps feeling emboldened by the counselor’s support, the senior student’s tone became more aggressive, defending him at every turn. ’So that’s how you play the ’good guy’! To get on the counselor’s good side, you have to be a smooth talker and blindly follow his lead!’

"How could you possibly know it won’t make a difference? I’m being treated unfairly—am I not even allowed to plead my case?" Seraphina couldn’t care less about their threats. ’Fine. If they won’t let me enjoy a quiet start to my university life, then I’ll just have to be loud about it!’

"If you continue to make a scene, we’ll call the police. The department has a mountain of work waiting for me, and I don’t have time to waste here. You were smart enough to get into Aethelgard University from a small town, so be smart now. You can’t become a student here this year. If you want to go to college, your only option is to retake the entrance exams next year. But if I call the police and you end up with a criminal record, what university do you think will accept you then? For your own future’s sake, you should leave right now. Don’t be impulsive and throw everything away over something so small."
