Chapter 578 Guide - I
In the labyrinthine streets, the tall girl at the front walked with an air of confidence. Though she wasn’t leading, she acted as if she were, like a wolf patrolling its territory.
Ravenna, staring at Ansel’s slightly amused profile, suddenly spoke, “I’m starting to suspect you did this on purpose.”
“If I could control where Seri’s training led her, why would I let her fall into such trouble?”
“If you insist on thinking that, Venna…”
The young Hydral shrugged, pinching Ravenna’s earlobe, “Then I can’t explain it any other way.”
“Once again, with that ‘I forgive your nonsense’ tone.” Ravenna huffed, lightly swatting away Ansel’s playful hand. “It’s not hard to earn my forgiveness.”
“Why do I need your forgiveness… Alright, alright.”
The great adventurer Faust, under the dangerous gaze of his monster lady, raised his hands in surrender. “So, what should I do?”
“Stop staring at her all the time.” Ravenna tugged at Ansel’s hair, clearly displeased. “Is it so hard to divide your attention?”
Ansel paused, then couldn’t help but chuckle. Obediently, he bent towards her, following the direction of her pull.
“Alright, I understand, it’s my fault, dear Venna.”
Ravenna said nothing, but she released his hair, walking quietly beside him.
“Ans… Faust!”
Seraphina, who was walking ahead, suddenly called out. “I’m not just tagging along for show. I want to be involved in this.”
“Oh?” Ansel tilted his head slightly. “This wasn’t part of our agreement, Miss Fenrir. You don’t need to do this much.”
“I’m not looking to make a deal with you.”
Seraphina crossed her arms, huffing. “I just want to catch those bastards, and I don’t need any compensation from you.”
As she spoke, a few genuine, instinctual traces of ferocity appeared on her charming face. The girl, like a beast incarnate, clenched her fists out of her instinct fierce and ruthlessness, her voice lowering slightly, filled with pure loathing and cruelty.
“After dealing with the leader, I forgot to clean up the rest of the trash… My oversight. If these scum haven’t fled yet, they must pay the price!”
The faintly escaping crimson-black aura from her body made Ravenna frown slightly. She instinctively looked at Ansel, only to see the young Hydral displaying a pleased expression.
“Since you put it that way… I have no reason to refuse.”
Ansel responded with a light laugh, “Then, allow me to thank Miss Fenrir for her assistance?”
“Hehe—cough cough—hmm!”
Just as Seraphina was about to giggle foolishly, she quickly coughed a few times to maintain her dignity as the big sister in front of the real guide behind her.
She raised her head, looking both proud and trying to appear modest, which was rather amusing.
“It’s nothing, really… Hey, Ada, are we almost there?”
The young guide, who seemed quite out of place among these handsome men and beautiful women, responded cautiously, “After passing through one more secret passage, we’ll be there shortly. But, big boss, we have so many people here, aren’t we being a bit too…?”
“As long as we can pinpoint the general direction, it’s fine.”
Seraphina’s face lit up with a cruel and excited smile, “I’ve almost pinpointed the location. Even if he tries to run now, it’s too late.”
The youngster froze for a moment, then glanced back at the intimidating dark-haired youth. Swallowing hard, he loudly echoed in support to bolster Seraphina, “You truly are remarkable, big boss!”
“Hmph, hehehehe, of course!”
Ansel’s eyes reflected Seraphina’s triumphant expression, his gaze soft yet tinged with an indescribable… melancholy.
For reasons unknown, the young Hydral turned to look at the frail girl at the rear. Upon sensing Ansel’s gaze, she blinked and silently mouthed, “What’s wrong?”
Ansel and Ravenna possessed a profound understanding of each other, manifesting in a tacit harmony in daily life, though not necessarily in an insight into each other’s hearts.
If they could so easily discern the truths of each other’s hearts, the rift that occurred three years ago would never have happened.
Yet, this obedient and gentle girl could effortlessly grasp Ansel’s meaning in an instant, rarely making mistakes—an exceedingly rare trait.
However, conversely… she seemed to sink deeper into the mire because of this ability.
Think carefully, Marlina, think carefully.
What exactly are you seeing in all of this?
What did Marlina see? She herself wasn’t sure and didn’t know how to describe it.
We should be on our way to rescue a kidnapped child, right?
Why does even Seri seem so… excited?
Marlina never used to ponder such trivial matters because they were of no help to Ansel and held no real significance.
She used to think that Seraphina’s nature was such that rescuing a kidnapped child would simply make her sister happy, and that was all.
However, influenced by the absurdities and contradictions she had witnessed in Dispute Fortress over time, Marlina found herself delving deeper into matters whenever they involved both extraordinary beings and ordinary people. Explore more stories at empire
Human trafficking is a dark and cruel affair.
Both Mr. Ansel and Miss Ravenna felt genuine anger when they saw the scene in the sewers.
Yet, why could they so quickly switch to light-hearted, intimate conversation… as if their true anger vanished in an instant, as if it had never been?
Was it because they were certain they would find the child? It must be so… after all, if that were the case, there would indeed be no need to carry a heavy heart.
But…
Extraordinary beings extract this “extraordinary” joy and meaning from ordinary people.
This thought involuntarily surfaced in the girl’s mind, and she subconsciously linked Seraphina’s current excitement to it.
Consequently, she couldn’t help but think of something that made her tremble.
Is Seri also deriving joy from this “rescue”?
No… no, Seri wouldn’t do that.
Finding happiness in good deeds is only natural; she never deliberately created suffering, nor did she help others for the sake of her own pleasure… Seri, who purely yearned to overthrow injustice, deserved this joy more than anyone.
Marlina immediately dismissed her previous thoughts, feeling ashamed that she could harbor such dark suspicions about that innocent and pure girl.
If even Seraphina were to become that dreadful, Marlina would lose all hope for this already dreadful world.
Yet, like a mortal girl swallowed by a vast, dark vortex, an idea still surfaced in her mind:
If Seri were not as powerful as she is now…
On the path to rescuing others, would she have been somber and furious, or as excited and elated… as she is now?
If there is a difference, the fundamental reason for the gradual change in her state of mind can only be…
