She put her sunglasses on and went to look for Wei Shaoyin.

In the quiet hallway, the man’s lanky silhouette stood out against the dim light. He was in his prim white shirt as usual.

This man had a clean yet cold aura that she couldn’t find on Li Lei or Pei Ziheng.

Xia Ling walked up to him and called him. “Ah Wei.”

Wei Shaoyin turned over. “Xiao Ling, is the event over yet?”

“It’s over for today.” She said, “There’s one more the following day. Why, is there anything?”

Wei Shaoyin said, “Boss sent me to pick you up. Shaohui is in trouble, the elevator he was on landed on a free fall and he had to undergo surgery for his injuries. They transfused the blood of the wrong type, and he’s in critical condition now.”

Xia Ling felt as if she had been caught in a calamity and couldn’t rationalize her emotions at all.

She had no idea how she left with Wei Shaoyin, except that he led her to the roof to board a helicopter. With both hands together, she prayed many times over in her heart: “Shaohui has to be safe.”

The helicopter headed straight for the hospital.

She alighted from it and staggered towards his ward as quickly as she could manage. The operating room doors were tightly shut, and the Emergency sign was still brightly lit. “What’s the situation now?” She asked the doctor.

The doctor said, “The child’s situation isn’t too optimistic. First, he sustained internal injuries when the elevator landed on a free fall. Then, during the surgery itself, we had transfused the O blood type before realizing it was wrong. Hemolysis occurred, and hence, his life is still in danger. We’re trying our best.”

Hemolysis?

She did not understand those medical terms, but Wei Shaoyin had a grave look on his face. “Didn’t you think of checking his blood type first before the transfusion? Hemolysis can kill, how could you be so careless!”

The doctor looked troubled. “We did a blood test on him just a while back, and the results were O-type blood.” He had no idea that the main doctor had altered the results, and was still in confusion about the situation.

Xia Ling was flustered as she asked the doctor in a shaky voice, “What are the chances of survival?”

“Honestly, even ten percent is…”

Wei Shaoyin glared at the doctor.

The doctor hurriedly changed his words. “Thir-Thirty percent.”

Xia Ling shuddered in fear. She rarely had this feeling, it was as if somebody was taking away something vital for her survival. “You’ve got to save him!” She begged the doctor. “I’ll give you any amount you ask!”

The doctor was caught in a fix too, this wasn’t an issue about money. The child was already badly injured from the elevator accident, now with the hemolysis reaction, it was hard to pull through! Given that the hospital could be held accountable for both issues, the doctor was worried as well.

He attempted to offer some words of assurance to Xia Ling, but given that they were insubstantial, it was of no help.

Xia Ling’s mind was in a mess. She couldn’t understand how it could be wrong when Shaohui did have O-type blood. Did the hospital make a mistake during the first blood test? A mistake that could be fatal…

Was she too much of a jinx that she brought a curse not just to her biological child, but to her adopted child as well?

How could such freak and impossible incidents befall this child?

She waited anxiously outside the operating theatre, and yet, could do nothing but blame herself. She blamed herself for going away for a performance at this time. If she had stayed by Little Shaohui’s side, would he have escaped this? Oh right, where was Li Lei? Why wasn’t he here?

He had promised her to take good care of this child.

Now that things had happened, where was he?!

She looked up and asked.

“Boss? He’s in the operating room.” Wei Shaoyin replied, “Shaohui’s actual blood type is MNSSU-type, the same as Boss’. They didn’t have this in the blood bank, and hence, needed Boss to save him.”

Wei Shaoyin added, “Before entering the operating room, he instructed me to pick you up.”

So he couldn’t be there for her because he was saving the child. She had no idea how much blood was needed, but it must be quite a large amount. Was Li Lei up for it?

She worried for Shaohui alone initially. But now, she had to worry for two.

She hoped they would both be safe…

“They will be blessed.” Wei Shaoyin comforted her. “I’ve mobilized the best specialists back at home to help with the treatment.” The Wei family was involved in the pharmacological field and had some of the best doctors and scientists worldwide.

Even so, Xia Ling did not feel much better.

This involved the life and death of two beloved people, how could she feel alright?

She subconsciously reached for the amulet around her neck, the one that took half of Li Lei’s blood to conjure. Back then, he had given up so much blood for her, and now, he was doing the same for her child…

Xia Ling suddenly realized how good he was to her.

Although there was Su Tang, and also many other people in the way, this man always did whatever it took to protect her.

And her child as well.

Her nose scrunched up a little.

Wei Shaoyin was still consoling her. “With my people, my family, they’ll definitely pull through.” Although he had fled from his competitive, elite household, he knew just how good they were in this field. If they had no certainty of succeeding in any task, nobody else would.

Xia Ling’s mind was in a mess, but his words reminded her—

Yes, family.

She reached for her cell phone and called her brother.

“Hello, Brother…” She was about to cry. “Shaohui is in trouble, and Li Lei is donating lots of blood to him. I’m worried about the both of them… What should I do? Do you have any way to save them?” All these years, she had rarely contacted her family, but they always came to mind in times of crisis.

She had talked to her family about it when she adopted Shaohui.

Back then, Xia Moyan had responded calmly, “He is compatible with you, it’ll be fine as long as you’re fond of this child.”

Now that Shaohui was in trouble, she could only turn to her brother for help. “Aren’t you good at this? Can you help chant a mantra, or say a prayer to bless the both of them?” She pleaded.

On the other end, Xia Moyan’s expression was as calm and unmoved as usual. “They will be alright.”

“Really?” Brother made it out so lightly that it scared her instead.

Xia Moyan looked towards the spell circle in the middle of the ancient hut before him. Xiao Ling still had no idea that this whole incident had everything to do with the spell he cast. How could he possibly not know whether their lives were in danger?
