A Star Reborn: The Queen’s Return

Chapter 1204 - Guardian

Chapter 1204: Guardian

“How should we get down?” She forced herself to calm down as she scanned the contacts on her phone. “Let’s call the police.”

“No signal here.” His three words destroyed all of her hope.

She widened her eyes, not daring to believe it. She tried calling on her phone and realized that, as he said, there wasn’t a number she could get through.

“Is this your plot?!” She was fuming.

He smiled. “You think too highly of me.”

That was when Xia Yingluo realized that she wasn’t quite making sense. Powerful and capable as he was, wasn’t blocking signal off her phone a little far-fetched? She’d probably been through too many strange events recently, all of which had messed with her mind.

She tossed her phone aside in disappointment.

Wei Lingnan didn’t seem the least bit anxious. “You’ve never watched a sunset with me.”

She was about to puke blood upon hearing his words. This wasn’t a good time to be thinking about enjoying the sunset! “If we don’t get out, this car is going to fall off the cliff sooner or later. We are going to be corpses watching the sunsets here for the rest of time,” she said coldly.

Wei Lingnan smiled. “Would you like that? It sounds pretty nice.”

Xia Yingluo was so close to just pushing him off the cliff.

Wei Lingnan looked out the window at the sunset, his eyes tinted with a faint shade of red and orange. He looked slightly devilish this way, but at the same time, appeared gentler than usual. “Ah Luo, do you remember? The first time I went out for combat, you were so afraid I wouldn’t return, that you’d climb to the mountaintop every day to wait for me. Then, a huge explosion occurred in the war zone. It was… red and enormous like this… and you thought I’d died. You cried for a long time and they were about to find you another guardian, but you simply refused. You ran to the war zone to look for me on your own. At that time, you were… so young. You emerged from the horizon, as if… as if covered in a gold shawl.” He sounded more and more gentle as he spoke on. Going back deep into his memory, he smiled. “I was so afraid, you know? That was when I swore to myself…”

He did not go on from there as he gazed at the bright red sun before him.

Xia Yingluo was immersed in his story. “What did you swear?”

“Don’t you know?” The annoying Wei Lingnan was back. “Ah Luo, you’re getting less adorable as you get older. Do you know how many times I’ve felt like strangling you to death? You’ve got my magnanimity to thank for living each day.”

She scoffed. “You’re crazy.”

But deep inside, she kept replaying the words he’d said. Based on his story, it seemed like he’d mistaken her for someone else when he was younger? She’d followed her father and brothers to so many war zones as a child, who knew which one he was referring to? What she knew for sure, however, was that she had not cried incessantly and waited for somebody on a mountain, not to mention risk her life by running to some war zone to find him. “That little girl is such a poor thing, having to worry about you at such a young age.” Xia Yingluo mocked him. “Don’t you know that a good man never makes a girl troubled?”

He smiled a little slyly. “Funny how it’s coming from you.”

She shot him a glare.

He leaned against the driver’s seat, seeming like he wasn’t the least bit afraid that the car would tip over and fall off the cliff. Just like that, he watched the sunset quietly.

She couldn’t keep her curiosity inside her. “What did you say about a guardian? What’s a guardian?”

He kept quiet for a while. Just as she thought he wasn’t going to answer her, he said, “A guardian is a sort of creature, a strange species, a suicide squad. Only the most foolish little girl would cry for a guardian.”

His tone was still somewhat mocking, but for some reason, she felt a little sad.

“You…” She thought for a long time before cautiously posing the question. “You really like that little girl?”

He turned around and looked at her. At that moment, all the tenderness in his eyes faded away with the red tint as he regained his usual cold demeanor. “No, I hate that little girl.” He bared his teeth like a prey threatening its predator. “All these years, I’ve been thinking of finding her, ripping her apart and swallowing her. Ah Luo, someday you’ll be kneeling before me, begging me to forgive all that you’ve done, begging me to love you.”

Lunatic… he really was a lunatic!

Curiosity killed the cat indeed. Xia Yingluo regretted asking the question. She had no idea what went on in this man’s head, but evidently, he had already mistaken her for that poor little girl. No way was she going to be ripped apart by him! Not to mention kneel before him and begging for mercy! She felt a need to make things clear—

“I’m not that little girl,” she said under his terrifying gaze. “I don’t remember ever knowing a Guardian, and I don’t know what you’ve been saying. You’ve got the wrong person, stop wasting time on me and look for her instead.”

Wei Lingnan said, “Don’t worry, you’ll recall it someday.”

“I already said I’m not!” Xia Yingluo was losing her patience.

He kept quiet.

Xia Yingluo tried something else. “Why are you so sure it’s me?”

He still didn’t say a word.

“In fact, you’re not even sure, right?” She made a bold guess. “You must’ve been apart for many years, that’s why you mistook me for her. Did she leave anything behind for you? A memento or a special mark for you to recognize her? Look at me, I’ve got nothing, how could I be her?”

“Shut up.” His voice seemed to have come from the depths of hell.

Xia Yingluo got frightened by him and stopped talking.

Perhaps that little girl was too important to him, so important that he wouldn’t accept mistaking someone else? And had no choice but to see her as the same little girl? If that was the case, wasn’t she way too unlucky? Not only did she bump into a lunatic, but she was also even being a substitute in his eyes.

She gazed at the dimming sky, what was she to do?

A long time later, Wei Lingnan asked her, “Why have you stopped talking?”

She snapped. “Didn’t you tell me to shut up?

“When have you become so obedient?”

She glared at him. “Let me out of here. I’m hungry, I want to get something to eat.” Seeing that his emotions were fluctuating, it was safer for her to leave as soon as she could, lest he decides to drive the car off the cliff in a moment of impulse.

Wei Lingnan did not argue with her this time. He quietly reversed the car onto the road.

Xia Yingluo looked at him in disbelief. “Y-You just reversed the car like that?!” This was illogical, impossible!

Wei Lingnan acted like nothing strange had happened. “What’s there to be surprised about, you can do it too.”

“I can’t!” Maybe no one else in this world could! Xia Yingluo was on the verge of going mad. Too many incredible things had happened with this man, and she was beginning to doubt what she knew as fact.
