A Psychopath Reborn as a Third-rate Villain

Chapter 147: What the Weak Fear

  • Next Chapter

The cavern trembled as the massive creature took its second step.

Dust drifted from the ceiling in thin streams, catching the faint blue light of the glowing plants that lined the subterranean river. The smaller plated monsters had already vanished completely between the enormous roots, leaving only the four of them facing the thing that had driven them away. The air itself felt heavier now, thick with the creature’s presence and the residual mana leaking from the crystalline growths along its spine. Every breath it released carried a low vibration that traveled through the stone floor and into their bones.

Andras did not move.

Echo Resonance spread outward in controlled waves, mapping the space, the creature’s size, the density of its scales, and the way its weight pressed into the rock. The readings came back clear. Nearly four meters at the shoulder. Thick natural armor that would turn ordinary blades. Crystalline ridges running along its back, pulsing with condensed mana that made the air around them faintly distort. Crimson eyes tracking them with heavy, deliberate focus.

It was not simply large.

It was the reason the lesser creatures had fled.

Evelyne’s frost continued spreading in a slow, deliberate circle around the group. Thin sheets of ice crawled across the stone with soft crystalline crackles, locking into place and dropping the temperature several degrees in seconds. The cold sharpened the air, carrying the clean scent of ice beneath the heavier metallic tang of the creature’s mana. Selene shifted her stance without a word, blade angled low and ready. Lyra stood slightly behind Andras, the Darksteel Spear held in both hands. Her breathing was controlled, but faster than usual. Her knuckles had gone white around the shaft.

The creature’s gaze settled on them.

Evelyne glanced at her son.

"Should I end it?"

Her voice was calm. There was no tension in it, only the quiet certainty of someone who already knew the answer if efficiency was the only goal. The ice around her feet thickened slightly, ready to surge the moment she decided. The difference in power was obvious to everyone present. What stood before them was dangerous to most people in the empire. To Evelyne Darkmoor, it was simply another obstacle that could be removed in moments.

Andras shook his head once.

"No."

*I need to test it.*

The thought was clear and immediate. Eclipse Edge had accepted his grip in the tomb, but acceptance and true combat compatibility were not the same thing. He had taken a Legendary sword that was never meant for him. The residual will of the First Sword Saint had rejected him as a successor. The only way to know how the blade would perform in real battle—how Severance would interact with heavy natural armor, how Silent Cut would mask his movements, how the sword would respond to his mana under pressure—was to use it against something that could actually kill him if he made a mistake.

This creature was strong enough to serve that purpose.

Evelyne’s eyes narrowed a fraction.

"Andras."

"I want to fight it."

Selene looked over, eyebrows rising slightly, but she said nothing. Lyra’s grip on the spear tightened further. The young maid’s expression showed a mix of concern and understanding—she had seen enough of her master’s decisions to know he rarely chose the safer path when there was something to gain.

Evelyne studied him for a long moment. The concern in her expression was clear, but so was the recognition that arguing would be pointless. She exhaled softly, the sound almost lost beneath the creature’s low growling.

"Very well. But the moment it becomes more than you can handle, I will finish it."

"Understood."

Andras stepped forward.

Eclipse Edge slid free of his storage ring and settled into his hand. The dark blade of the Legendary sword caught the faint blue light of the cavern’s glowing plants, its surface almost absorbing the illumination rather than reflecting it. He rolled his shoulders once, letting Sovereign Predator Physique settle into readiness. Mana Compression stirred quietly along his circuits.

He raised the sword.

The creature charged.

The distance closed in three heavy strides. Stone cracked under its weight with sharp, echoing reports that rolled through the cavern. Andras moved first—not toward the creature, but to the side. Echo Step carried him clear of the direct path an instant before the monster’s claws tore through the space he had occupied, carving deep gouges into the cavern floor. Shards of rock exploded outward, several of them striking the ice Evelyne had laid down and skittering across the surface with sharp clicks.

Andras was already circling.

He did not try to meet the charge head-on. Instead he used the creature’s own momentum against it, sliding along its flank while Echo Resonance fed him the exact timing of its weight shifts. Eclipse Edge drove toward the seam between two large scales near the foreleg. Severance activated the moment the edge met resistance. The Legendary blade partially ignored the defensive density of the scales and sank deeper than a normal weapon would have managed. Dark, thick blood welled immediately, running down the dark scales in slow rivulets.

The creature roared and twisted toward him with surprising speed for its size. Its jaws opened wide enough to take a man whole, rows of heavy teeth gleaming in the blue light. Andras did not stay to trade blows. Echo Step carried him back three meters just as the jaws snapped shut on empty air with a sound like stone breaking. He landed lightly, already assessing the result.

The wound was real, but not critical. The creature’s recovery speed was high. Its pain response was muted—more irritation than true injury. The crystalline ridges along its spine pulsed brighter for a moment, as if compensating for the damage.

It lunged again.

Andras met the second charge with short, efficient exchanges. Echo Resonance tracked every shift in weight and every flare of mana along the crystalline ridges. Eclipse Edge flashed in measured arcs—never wild, never wasteful—targeting joints and scale seams whenever a fraction of weakness appeared. Silent Cut suppressed the sound of several strikes, making the exact angle of the next attack harder to track through vibration alone. The dark blade moved like an extension of his intent rather than a separate tool.

The creature adapted.

It began slamming its limbs into the ground before attacking, sending sharp vibrations through the stone that disrupted footing and tried to throw off timing. Andras felt the pulses through Echo Resonance a fraction of a second before they fully formed and adjusted, letting the force wash past rather than meeting it directly. Sovereign Predator Physique absorbed the residual impact with only a dull ache across his shoulders and the soles of his feet. Still, the vibrations made clean footwork harder. The creature used the advantage, forcing him to spend more movement on evasion than on offense.

A glancing claw left a shallow but stinging cut along his upper arm. Blood welled, warm against his skin, and began to soak into the fabric of his coat. Andras registered the injury without slowing. The physique talent was already working to close it.

Then one of his cuts landed differently.

He stepped inside a downward strike and drove Eclipse Edge into a crystalline ridge near the base of the neck. Silent Cut kept the strike quiet until the moment of impact. The crystal shattered with a sharp internal crack that echoed through the cavern. The creature’s body jerked violently. Its next step was slower. Less coordinated. The residual mana that had been flowing cleanly through that channel scattered in disordered pulses that Echo Resonance picked up clearly.

Andras’s eyes narrowed.

The crystals weren’t armor.

They were part of its mana circulation.

He pressed the advantage without hesitation.

Staying close, he used short bursts of Echo Step to remain inside the creature’s reach where its heavier attacks were harder to land cleanly. Eclipse Edge carved into two more crystals in quick succession. Dark blood ran more freely now, dripping onto the stone and mixing with the frost that still lingered from Evelyne’s earlier preparation. The monster’s movements grew heavier. Its coordination continued to degrade. It released a wider ground pulse that cracked the stone in a rough circle around them and forced Andras to disengage temporarily.

He landed several meters away, breathing steadily. Sweat had begun to gather along his temples and the back of his neck. The cut on his arm stung with every movement. His mana pathways carried a faint strain from the continuous use of Echo Step, Echo Resonance, and precise strikes. Sovereign Predator Physique kept his recovery high, but the fight was lasting longer than a clean execution would have required. The Legendary sword had performed well, yet the creature’s durability and vibration-based attacks made every exchange costly in focus and stamina.

The creature lowered its head, crimson eyes locked on him with clear killing intent. Several of the crystalline ridges were cracked or broken. Dark blood matted the scales along its neck and shoulders. It was slower than it had been at the start, but still far from finished.

Evelyne’s voice cut across the cavern, calm but final.

"That’s enough."

Andras glanced toward her.

She was already moving.

Frost surged outward in a single, overwhelming wave. The temperature plummeted so sharply that the air itself seemed to tighten. A dense lattice of ice formed around the creature in less than a second, locking its limbs, its jaw, and the remaining crystalline ridges in place with a series of sharp, crystalline snaps. The monster thrashed once, twice—powerful enough that the ice groaned and hairline fractures spread across the surface—then the constructs thickened further, climbing its body in layered sheets until even the heavy vibrations it tried to release were muffled and contained.

Evelyne raised one hand.

The ice constricted with controlled, absolute force.

There was a deep, muffled crack as something vital inside the creature gave way. The crimson light in its eyes flickered, dimmed, and went out. The massive body remained locked in the ice for a moment longer before the constructs slowly began to recede, leaving the corpse standing frozen in place like a dark, blood-streaked statue. Residual frost still clung to the scales and the shattered crystals.

Silence returned to the cavern, broken only by the soft sound of settling ice and the distant flow of the subterranean river.

Evelyne lowered her hand and looked at her son. There was no triumph in her expression—only quiet resolve mixed with a clear note of apology.

"I’m sorry, Andras." Her voice was steady, but softer than usual. "But I think we should clear this dungeon quickly and go home. There is no need to take unnecessary risks here."

Andras stood still for several seconds, Eclipse Edge still in hand. The cut on his arm had already stopped bleeding, the physique talent sealing the worst of it. He looked at the frozen corpse, then at the dark blood on his blade, and finally at his mother. The difference in power had been absolute. What had taken him sustained effort and accumulating strain, she had ended in moments without visible exertion.

He gave a small nod.

"Understood."

He slid Eclipse Edge back into his storage ring. The weight of the Legendary sword vanished from his grip.

*It was enough.*

He had tested the sword properly. Severance could penetrate the creature’s natural armor. Silent Cut worked as expected. The blade responded smoothly to his mana.

That was all he needed to know.

There was nothing to devour. The System had already confirmed that dungeon-born creatures lacked the essence it required.

Selene exhaled and lowered her blade, the tension leaving her shoulders. Lyra remained where she was for a moment longer, spear still raised, eyes wide as she stared at the remains of the creature that had seemed so overwhelming only minutes before. The gap between her current strength and what she had just witnessed was vast. She slowly lowered the Darksteel Spear, her breathing still uneven.

Evelyne’s frost began to fade from the surrounding stone. The cavern felt larger again without the creature’s presence pressing against them. The metallic scent of blood mixed with the cold, clean smell of melting ice.

Andras glanced toward the darker passages that branched deeper into the dungeon, where the roots grew thicker and the blue glow of the plants grew dimmer.

They still had more ground to cover.

But the first real threat had been removed—not by him, but by the simple fact that his mother had decided the lesson was over.

He accepted it without argument.

There would be other fights. Other dungeons. Other opportunities to test himself without someone strong enough to end the battle with a single gesture standing nearby.

For now, they moved deeper, the frozen corpse of the monster left behind them in the quiet dark.
