Chapter 797: Chapter 794: I Didn’t Ask You to Save Me

"Hey, is it embarrassing for a grown man to cry out in pain? Are grown men not allowed to be afraid of pain? I *am* afraid of pain, so what?" River Sterling was getting annoyed by her words. He feared nothing in this world; was it so wrong to be afraid of pain?

"Hey, I got hurt saving you, and you have the audacity to complain about me? Have you no conscience?"

Rhys Ryston was unconcerned. "I didn’t ask you to save me. If you hadn’t, you wouldn’t be hurt, would you?"

"You!" River Sterling felt his chest tighten with anger at her words, but he couldn’t argue. It was true. She hadn’t asked him to save her. He had seen her in danger and rushed over without a second thought.

However, today’s events made one thing certain for River Sterling. He had never understood, nor dared to confront, his own feelings for Rhys Ryston. He knew he couldn’t get her out of his mind, but he could never quite define what those feelings were.

Now, he finally understood. He had fallen in love with her!

’Otherwise, how could he have possibly disregarded his own safety and charged in the moment he saw her in danger?’

’He found it hard to believe. His type had never been anything like Rhys Ryston. He liked women who were gorgeous, alluringly graceful, and knew how to flirt. Rhys Ryston was a world away from that. How could he have fallen for a woman like her?’

’And yet, he had to admit it. He had truly fallen in love with her!’

Upon realizing he was in love with Rhys Ryston, River Sterling didn’t feel the least bit dejected. On the contrary, it felt as if his heart, which had been drifting for so many years, had finally found its anchor.

His eyes gleamed as he stared at Rhys Ryston, a roguish smirk playing on his lips. "Fine, I was asking for it. I’m the one who insisted on saving you, happy now?"

His words made Rhys Ryston feel that she had been a bit too harsh. ’After all, he got hurt saving me. He was just teasing a bit now, so why am I making such a big deal out of it?’

So, she bit her lip gently and reached out to take his arm. "I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that. Actually, I should be the one thanking you today..."

River Sterling immediately held up a hand to stop her. "Forget the thanks. Just hurry up and get me home. It hurts to stand."

...

Back at his place, Rhys Ryston helped him inside and got him settled face-down on the living room sofa. She straightened up and cleared her throat with a couple of awkward coughs. "Well, I’ll be going now. You should get some rest."

With that, she turned to leave, but River Sterling suddenly grabbed her hand. "Hey, you can’t just leave! What am I supposed to do if you go? What if I get hungry? What if I get thirsty? What if I have to use the bathroom? Are you really cruel enough to leave me here with no one to care for me? To let me starve, die of thirst, or have my bladder explode?"

Rhys Ryston was rendered speechless. "River Sterling, it’s just a minor injury! Do you think you’re paralyzed or something? If you’re hungry, you can order delivery. If you’re thirsty, you can get up and pour your own water. And you can walk to the bathroom by yourself!"

’It might hurt a little to move around, but it’s not like he’s completely unable to walk.’

"But... but the doctor said the wound can’t get wet for a couple of days. You have to help me wash up!" River Sterling said, still refusing to let go of her hand.

"She said your *wife* should help you. I’m not your wife! Besides, it wouldn’t be appropriate for me to help you wash up, would it?" ’Was he kidding? Just because he saved her, she was supposed to throw propriety and all sense of shame to the wind and give him a sponge bath?’
