Clara burst out laughing again. "If you don’t like her, why do you care that she’s looking at you differently?"

"Fine, don’t tell me then!" River Sterling huffed, turning his face away.

"It’s so obvious. Before, when Ryston looked at you, it was with the kind of look you’d give a pervert or an idiot. But just now? Her gaze was so gentle, even a little admiring. It’s like you went from being a total fool to her personal hero."

"For real? She admires... Hey, Clara, what are you saying? You’re the fool, you’re the pervert!" River Sterling finally processed the insult and complained to Seth Quinn, "Seth, aren’t you going to do something about your wife!"

Seth Quinn, however, just nodded in agreement. "I think she’s got a point!"

Even though their friend was hurt and they knew they shouldn’t be gloating, Seth Quinn and Clara Grant just couldn’t help but laugh at his miserable state.

The two of them finally stifled their laughter when Rhys Ryston pulled the car up. They helped River Sterling get in, having him lie down on his stomach across the back seat since he couldn’t sit.

Rhys Ryston gave them a nod, then quickly drove away.

Clara sighed. "Well, considering Brother Sterling likes Ryston enough to risk his own life to save her, I hope he wins her heart soon. May they finally get their happy ending together."

Seth Quinn glanced at her. "Didn’t you used to say that River was too much of a womanizer and has been with countless women? That you didn’t want Rhys Ryston to end up with him?"

"Oh, come on. I still hate guys who change women like they change clothes, but what Brother Sterling did today really moved me. It makes me think he’s actually a reliable guy after all."

Seth Quinn just shook his head and smiled noncommittally. "You women are so sentimental. Get a little emotional, and your whole perspective changes just like that."

"It’s forgivable for a man to be a bit of a player before he falls in love. The important thing is that once he’s with the right woman, he’s loyal to her and only her.

Besides, they say that the men who were wild and untamable before meeting ’the one’ often become the most loyal and devoted partners afterward."

"So, are you saying a guy like me—who’s never been a player or chased after women—won’t be loyal and devoted?" Seth Quinn asked with a raised eyebrow.

Clara mimicked him, arching an eyebrow. "Well, I can’t jump to any conclusions just yet. You can resist temptation now, but who knows what the future holds?"

"Not in the past, not now, and not ever!" Seth Quinn said with fond exasperation, draping an arm over her shoulder. He reached out and gently booped her small, delicate nose. "Come on."

"Where are we going?" Clara asked, letting him guide her forward.

"On a date," Seth Quinn said, opening the car door for her. After she was settled, he walked around the front of the car and slid into the driver’s seat.

"What date? I haven’t agreed to be courted by you yet," Clara pouted.

"Fine. We won’t call it a date. Let’s just say I’m asking you out. How’s that?"

"Hmph. That works."

Inside the treatment room, River Sterling’s screams echoed one after another. The doctor removing the glass shards finally couldn’t stand it anymore and came out to call Rhys Ryston inside.

Rhys Ryston assumed they were finished and followed the doctor in, only to be met with the sight of River Sterling lying face down on the bed, his pants pulled halfway down, exposing his rear end.

She immediately ducked her head and spun around to leave, but the doctor said impatiently, "You’re with him, right? Stay here and get him to stop screaming. Honestly! A grown man, yelling like that over a little pain. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think someone was trying to give birth in here!"
