Chapter 735: Chapter 732: But What?

She had once hoped that Sierra Sutton could wait for Autumn Shelby to have a change of heart, so their family of three could return to the U.S.A. together. But now, she no longer felt that way.

Some things in life just can’t be forced. Perhaps Autumn Shelby and Sierra Sutton weren’t meant to be husband and wife for a lifetime, just as Autumn and the baby weren’t meant to have a lifetime together as father and child.

Seth Quinn hung up the phone. As he turned, he saw Clara Grant standing behind him. He froze for a moment, then gently took her hand to examine the scrapes on her arm. "Is it all treated?" he asked.

Clara Grant nodded. Seth held her hand so carefully, and a sudden wave of emotion washed over her—a mixture of relief and gratitude.

’I’m so lucky in this life,’ she thought. ’Even though so many external forces have tried to stand between me and Seth, at least I have him holding my hand, facing it all with me.’

"What’s wrong?" Seeing her staring at him, Seth grew a little nervous. "Do the cuts hurt?"

Clara snapped out of her daze and quickly shook her head. "No, I was just thinking,"

She gazed at him intently and said with genuine emotion, "I’m so glad you’re by my side!"

A smile touched Seth’s lips. He pulled her into his arms without a word, pressing a long, deep kiss to her forehead.

Clara nestled in his arms, her thoughts suddenly turning to Sierra Sutton, whose life still hung in the balance in the operating room. Her lips parted. "Seth," she asked, "if I had been the one who got hit... if I had died... would you have been terribly, terribly sad?"

The moment the words left her mouth, she felt Seth’s body go rigid. He immediately let her go and looked her in the eye, scolding, "Bite your tongue! What nonsense are you spouting? How could you possibly die? You have to remember, you belong to me. You’re not allowed to leave my side, ever, without my permission!"

Seeing this tall, six-foot-two man—usually the epitome of a cool, aloof CEO—making such a folksy, superstitious gesture, she suddenly couldn’t help but stifle a laugh.

"I was just speaking hypothetically. It’s not like it really happened..."

"Not even hypothetically. Don’t you go filling that head of yours with such wild thoughts all day. The two of us are going to spend the rest of our lives together. We still have to get married, we don’t have our own children yet, and there are so many things we still haven’t done."

When he mentioned children, Clara tilted her head. She felt a knot of nervousness in her stomach but forced herself to ask calmly, "But I thought you didn’t like kids?"

"I just don’t like them right now. That doesn’t mean I won’t like them in the future."

"Oh..." Clara was a little disappointed by his answer. ’So, in short, he doesn’t like kids, and he doesn’t want them right now.’

She instinctively raised a hand to her stomach, but Seth caught it. "Come on," he said, "let’s go check on how Sierra’s surgery is going."

Clara nodded, and the two of them returned to the doors of the operating room.

...

Finally, the doors to the operating room opened and a doctor walked out. The small group immediately rushed forward.

"Dr. Lee, how is she?" Rowan Linden was the first to speak.

"The surgery went very smoothly. The patient is out of immediate danger and should wake up once the anesthesia wears off." Dr. Lee pulled down his mask, his eyes scanning the faces before him. "However..."

There was nothing more terrifying than hearing a doctor say "however." Clara’s heart leaped into her throat. Staring at the doctor, she blurted out, "However what?"
