A New Life in Fairy Tail

Chapter 550 - 550: Magic is Truly Fascinating!

That day was arguably the most miserable experience of Natsu's entire life.

He was completely broke, utterly starving, and absolutely failing at both hunting and fishing, as if every single living creature in the forest had collectively agreed to avoid him and Happy. After starving for an entire day, the very first thing he finally managed to eat was a toxic mushroom. It was so poisonous that he actually hallucinated Igneel welcoming him into the afterlife.

If Noah hadn't magically sensed their fading life signatures and teleported across the country to purge the poison, they would have genuinely died. It took them several days of agonizing recovery under Noah's care to get back on their feet.

It was a literal nightmare. Natsu had worked incredibly hard to repress the memory, but Happy had just dragged it back to the surface.

The profound, agonizing terror of nearly starving to death had permanently traumatized both Natsu and Happy, instilling in them a deep-seated, instinctual need to stockpile emergency food funds. Thanks to that trauma, they had never gone hungry again.

"Wow... that sounds absolutely horrible," Lucy muttered, shaking her head in genuine sympathy.

It was common for Natsu to sacrifice a portion of his quest rewards to pay for collateral damage. But losing the entire reward, going into debt, walking hundreds of miles, starving for a day, eating poison, and nearly dying... that was astronomically bad luck.

"Exactly! Natsu's luck was so astronomically bad that day, it infected me! That's why I didn't catch a single fish! You all know I'm a master fisherman! It was totally his fault!" Happy nodded vigorously, pointing an accusatory paw at Natsu.

"WHAT?! It was your bad luck that ruined the fishing! And when we went hunting, you were the one leading the way, and we didn't see a single rabbit!" Natsu roared defensively, pointing right back.

"You're the one who picked the poisonous mushrooms! You nearly killed both of us!" Happy shrieked.

"Your bad luck made them poisonous!"

"Your bad luck made us broke!"

The boy and the cat instantly tackled each other, rolling around the lounge in a chaotic, brawling ball of dust.

"Guys, seriously..." Lucy sighed, stepping forward to break them up.

"Don't bother," Gray casually intercepted her, grabbing her shoulder. "They always do this. If you intervene, they'll just drag you into it. Just ignore them, and they'll tire themselves out in a minute."

Lucy paused, realizing Gray was probably right. She stepped back, though she kept a cautious eye on the brawl just in case Natsu accidentally ignited the carpet.

From a short distance away, Juvia stared at Gray's hand resting casually on Lucy's shoulder.

"Gray-sama... and his Love Rival... flirting so openly..." Juvia muttered, gnashing her teeth as a dark, terrifying aura began to visibly leak from her body.

Feeling an intense, murderous chill run down his spine, Gray violently shivered. He instantly retracted his hand and rigidly marched away, seeking refuge next to Elfman near the observation window. Juvia immediately began stealthily tailing him, her dark aura fading back into a lovestruck haze.

Meanwhile, Noah walked over to the section of the lounge where Ultear, Erza, Mirajane, and the other girls were gathered. He leaned against the railing, enjoying the breathtaking view and the soothing feeling of the localized atmospheric shields gently parting the wind.

He hadn't felt this relaxed in months. Watching the beautiful, sprawling landscape of Fiore pass by below lifted a massive weight off his shoulders.

"You still have Thought Projections active back home, don't you?" Ultear asked, glancing at him with a knowing smile.

"Yeah. I left clones at the Magnolia lab, and I have a few stationed on Tenrou Island running long-term alchemical simulations," Noah admitted smoothly.

"Noah, you work entirely too hard. You need to actually relax," Erza sighed, shaking her head.

"She's right. You can't just keep working non-stop. It isn't healthy," Mirajane added, her tone gentle but firm.

"Exactly! Being so ridiculously high-strung all the time is bad for you!" Sorano nodded vigorously.

"Noah-nii, please take care of your health," Meredy pleaded softly, with Wendy and Yukino nodding emphatically beside her.

"Seriously, if a monster like you is working that desperately hard, how are the rest of us supposed to feel?" Carla crossed her arms, fixing him with a stern glare.

Having lived under the same roof as Noah for years, the girls knew his habits intimately. If Noah wasn't physically training his body, he was buried in his lab researching magic. Even when he went out on missions or took them on dates, he always left clones behind to continue his research. He literally never stopped working.

His terrifying work ethic actually made the girls feel guilty whenever they tried to relax.

It was only after Ultear, Erza, and the others essentially staged a united intervention—physically dragging him out of his lab and forcing him to sleep a normal eight hours a night—that his schedule had somewhat normalized. But even now, he spent roughly twelve hours a day engaged in intense training or complex research.

His absolute discipline had inadvertently infected the rest of the guild, pushing everyone to train harder, which resulted in the guild's current overwhelming strength.

However, over the years, Ultear and the older girls couldn't shake the feeling that something massive and terrifying was actively chasing Noah. It felt like he was desperately racing against a ticking clock that only he could hear.

But they also knew his dedication wasn't purely born of fear. They could clearly see the sheer, unadulterated joy in his eyes whenever he cracked a complex magical equation or successfully engineered a new spell.

Because they trusted him completely, they never pried into his ultimate motivations. They simply made it their mission to ensure he didn't work himself to death in the process.

"I don't think it's hard work at all. I genuinely enjoy it. Magic is truly fascinating," Noah smiled, shaking his head.

In the beginning, his desperate drive to become stronger was entirely fueled by the terrifying knowledge that Acnologia, the Black Dragon of the Apocalypse, was out there. He knew the canonical timeline, and he knew that without overwhelming power, everyone he loved would die.

But as the years passed, that sheer, primal fear became a secondary motivation. His primary drive was simply his profound love for magic.

Noah had lived a previous life in a mundane world devoid of miracles. In that life, rigorous physical training yielded incredibly slow, incremental results, making it difficult for most people to stay motivated.

But Earthland was a world of magic. And Noah possessed an unparalleled affinity for it.

The ability to manipulate reality with his own hands, to visualize a complex spell and watch it manifest perfectly in the physical world... the sheer dopamine rush was unimaginable to anyone born in Earthland.

Furthermore, magic provided instantaneous, tangible feedback. Every time he trained, his Ethernano capacity expanded. Every time he researched, his spells became faster, stronger, and more versatile.

That constant, undeniable positive feedback loop fueled his obsession.

The more he researched, the stronger he became. The stronger he became, the more complex magic he could access, which provided even greater feedback.

He wasn't suffering through his research; he was happily swimming in an endless ocean of discovery.

Of course, the looming threats of Acnologia and Zeref were still very real. He was determined to protect Fairy Tail and the family he had built here.

Relying on the canonical "power of friendship" to magically generate plot armor and win fights through sheer emotional outbursts was suicidal insanity. Yes, Earthland's magic was deeply tied to emotion, and intense feelings could trigger massive power spikes.

But relying on a lucky, emotional power-up to defeat apocalyptic gods was wildly irresponsible.

Noah refused to gamble his family's lives on luck. He vastly preferred the alternative: acquiring such absolute, overwhelming magical supremacy that he could simply crush his enemies into dust before they could even monologue.

Absolute, suffocating power was the only reliable safety net.

"Besides, if I hadn't worked so hard, all the tactical preparations in the world wouldn't have saved us from Acnologia on Tenrou Island. Without the raw power to back up the strategy, we would have all died on that beach," Noah pointed out reasonably.

The girls nodded in solemn agreement.

Noah's preparations—the localized planetary defense matrix, his ability to stall the Dragon King in hand-to-hand combat, and his ultimate feat of shifting the entire island into the Celestial Spirit Realm—required an unfathomable depth of magical theory and raw power. If Noah had slacked off even a little bit over the last decade, none of that would have been possible, and Fairy Tail would have been annihilated.

"I understand that, but I need to correct your previous statement. You are already undeniably, overwhelmingly strong," Carla stated firmly.

"I'm really not," Noah sighed.

"You honestly don't feel guilty saying that?" Carla glared at him, her tail twitching in annoyance. If Noah considered himself weak, what did that make the rest of them?

"I'm being completely serious. Acnologia is vastly stronger than I am. And Zeref is currently much stronger than me," Noah replied, his tone deadpan and completely genuine.

Carla choked, staring at him in utter disbelief.

Well... yes. Those two were stronger. But one was the apocalyptic Dragon King who had ended an entire era, and the other was the immortal, cursed progenitor of all dark magic.

Noah was a mortal human who had only been studying magic for a little over a decade. Comparing himself to ancient, apocalyptic gods and feeling inadequate was absolute lunacy! Carla didn't even know how to respond to that level of warped perspective.

"Carla, Noah-nii working hard is a good thing! It means we need to work hard too!" Wendy smiled, picking the Exceed up and hugging her.

"I never said it was a bad thing. But he needs to prioritize his physical health so we don't have to constantly worry about him dropping dead from exhaustion," Carla grumbled, accepting the hug.

"I do prioritize my health! My sleep schedule is perfectly regulated now!" Noah protested defensively.

"Only because Ultear and the others forcefully intervened! If they hadn't literally dragged you to bed, you'd still be pulling all-nighters in your lab!" Carla shot back instantly.

Meredy and Yukino nodded vigorously, clearly remembering the chaotic intervention.

Noah opened his mouth to argue, then closed it. He couldn't really refute that. It was entirely his fault he had worried them so much in the past.

"Alright, that's enough. As long as you promise not to push yourself past your limits, stick to your sleep schedule, and stop making us worry, we won't bring it up again," Ultear smiled softly, stepping closer to him.

"Ultear, you're the only one who truly understands me!" Noah dramatically grabbed her, burying his face in her shoulder like a wronged child.

Ultear blushed slightly, but she smiled, wrapping her arms around him and gently patting his back to comfort him.

"Ultear spoils him too much. If you ask me, if Noah ever violates his sleep schedule again, we should implement a mandatory punishment system. We design the punishments, and he has to execute them without complaint," Sorano declared, crossing her arms and glaring at his back.

"I completely agree. An established penalty system would act as an excellent deterrent," Erza nodded approvingly, her disciplinary instincts flaring to life.

"Wait, what?! No, that's a terrible idea!" Noah's head instantly snapped up from Ultear's shoulder. He looked at Sorano and Erza, realizing they were entirely serious.

He frantically looked to Mirajane for support.

"I actually think it's a wonderful idea," Mirajane smiled sweetly, her eyes curving into happy crescents.

Noah felt a chill run down his spine. He slowly turned his head to look at the woman he was still hugging.

"It really is a solid plan. Since you clearly lack the self-preservation instinct to manage your own health, a disciplinary framework is the only logical solution," Ultear whispered into his ear, a teasing, dangerous smirk playing on her lips.

"Ultear... not you too..." Noah's voice cracked. He slowly released her and took two steps back, staring at his fiancées in utter betrayal.

"It's for your own good, Noah. Just accept your fate," Ultear giggled.

Noah looked at Erza, Mirajane, and Sorano. Their expressions were resolute. There was absolutely no room for negotiation. He was completely outvoted.

"Fine. I agree to the terms," Noah sighed in profound defeat, his shoulders slumping.

"YES!" Sorano cheered victoriously. She immediately grabbed Erza and Mirajane by the arms. "Girls, huddle up! We need to brainstorm the penalty list immediately!"

"Hey! I haven't even broken the rules yet! Why are you already designing the punishments?!" Noah complained indignantly.

"Proper prior planning prevents poor performance," Sorano quoted sagely, patting his shoulder with mock sympathy. "Given your track record, a violation is statistically inevitable. We're just being proactive. It's for your own good, really."

"I am so incredibly touched by your concern," Noah deadpanned, rolling his eyes.

"You're very welcome. Now shush, we're working," Sorano waved him off, turning to Ultear. "Ultear, get over here! We need to draft at least ten distinct penalty scenarios. If ten isn't enough, we'll draft more."

Noah stared at her in utter disbelief. Ten distinct scenarios?! Are you engineering a military tribunal?!

Ultear laughed softly and stepped forward, eagerly joining the girls' sinister planning committee.
