Chapter 2769: Chapter 1876: Contradictions (Time to Visit the Cemetery Tomorrow)

Is change a form of invariance?

When Duanmu Huai told this joke to Mary, he was purely treating it as a joke, similar to "God is omnipotent, then can God create a stone that He Himself cannot lift?" Or perhaps The Emperor keeps preaching Imperial truths, and one day cultivates an "atheist god" in Subspace...

Duanmu Huai’s joke about the Lord of Change is similarly built on this paradox.

Because players all know why the "plan" of Cunning Deception has become a meme; the reason is simply... it can’t control itself.

Indeed, here is a recap of the nature of deities. The Subspace Evil Gods, formed from the extreme emotions of living beings, must act according to their nature. The more extreme the emotions, the greater the impact.

Why does the plan of Cunning Deception always fail?

The reason is simple: it doesn’t necessarily have to succeed.

Cunning Deception craves change, anticipates change, is change itself. If you scheme a plot and everything goes smoothly without any error, such would not please Cunning Deception. Instead, if you plot a scheme, confident in your superiority, only to crash at the last moment.

This would make Cunning Deception overjoyed.

It’s not that Cunning Deception is a masochist who can only be happy when tortured, but because it is the God of Change, the Lord of Change. Only change aligns with Cunning Deception’s intention, which is why, despite Cunning Deception ranking second among the Four Great Evil Gods, people don’t take it seriously.

When the other three receive sacrifices, they can truly destroy a planet or even a galaxy.

But Cunning Deception, if you don’t crash yourself, you’re embarrassed to say you’re its believer.

Thus, one can say that change is the core logic of Cunning Deception, absolutely unchangeable. This is also why Cunning Deception and Corrupted Foil have a poor relationship, because Corrupted Foil represents eternal stagnation, contrary to Cunning Deception, like two poles of a magnet that naturally repel each other.

So the question arises.

An absolute unchangeable core logic, still considered change?

This paradoxical theory is common online, such as saying the only eternal thing in this world is that nothing is eternal.

So is this something? Or nothing?

This question is irrelevant to others.

Duanmu Huai doesn’t care, Mary doesn’t care, even Corrupted Foil, Obsessive Sin, Brutal Wrath don’t care.

Does change matter to them?

Probably not.

But for Cunning Deception... it’s a different matter.

Of course, relying solely on this paradoxical joke, it’s not easy to make Cunning Deception defenseless; if others spoke such things, Cunning Deception would simply laugh and let him figure it out himself. Unfortunately, appearing before Cunning Deception now, is Mary Clarissa Christie.

She may not be remarkable in herself.

But she possesses—the Golden Pupil.

That eye, emitting a golden glow, anchors the pure essence of all things in the world. To Cunning Deception, she is a more dangerous and troublesome opponent than Duanmu Huai. From Cunning Deception’s perspective, Duanmu Huai isn’t much of a threat, at best, just another Brutal Wrath. Previously, it toyed with Brutal Wrath, so naturally, it can toy with Duanmu Huai.

But Mary is different.

Her Golden Pupil can see through everything, lies, illusions, nothing can escape Mary’s eye. In fact, in the previous three battles, Cunning Deception wanted to kill Mary the most, not Duanmu Huai. Especially when it prompted Mary to awaken the Night Embracer—after all, Cunning Deception knew well, as the ruler of physical laws, Mary’s Golden Pupil had little effect on the Star Gods. Had Mary been a bit anxious then and awakened the Night Embracer early, there was a significant chance she’d be killed by the Star God fragment, thus clearing away its greatest obstacle.

Unfortunately, this girl turned out to be even more troublesome than imagined.

Her desire is quite mild, yet her goals are steadfast, even obsessive—not merely a matter of romantic affection between genders, there is a sense of mission involved.

Damnable Obsessive Sin, that fool!

Originally if Obsessive Sin were here, it could heighten Mary’s expectations for Duanmu Huai, leading her down a path of destruction and downfall.

But unexpectedly, Duanmu Huai used an out-of-bounds move!

At the time, Cunning Deception also felt that aura—Corrupted Foil is The God of Life, yet the will Duanmu Huai summoned from beyond the heavens was even more refined and pure than Corrupted Foil. Creatures like Obsessive Sin couldn’t resist the other’s erosion and were directly transformed.

Cunning Deception then saw the unspeakable shadow in Subspace—it didn’t know what it was, but it knew it was an entity it should never provoke.

Thankfully, the bald man went too far in the previous map, leading to restriction within his world, otherwise if he summoned that terrifying extraterrestrial entity again, Cunning Deception wouldn’t know what to do... this is why it loathes Brutal Wrath, that bumpkin will face things head-on, never minding technique, and even despises magic!

This bald man is completely of the same lineage as it! They don’t understand intelligence’s importance at all! They just want to fight! Nothing else matters to them, and they don’t care!

Thus Cunning Deception targeted Mary, thinking that as long as it took down Mary, Duanmu Huai posed no threat.

Because the true threat to it is precisely Mary’s Golden Pupil.

Whenever stared at by that eye, Cunning Deception feels as if its disguise is completely stripped away, leaving only the essence within—a sense of fear. All lies, illusions, and countless possibilities vanish within that gaze, even Feng Ruo’s destiny becomes a straight line before that eye.

It can be said to be the most tricky enemy.

And now, even more so.

To Mary, it was just a little word game, a joke.

But to Cunning Deception, it was as if its disguise was completely laid bare, forcing it to confront the issue.

Is the Lord of Change, whose tenet is transformation, itself also a constant?

If so, then is it actually changing, or unchanging?

"No———————!!"

The Crystal Maze began to collapse, Cunning Deception’s screams reverberated within—it was an intellectual confrontation. And Cunning Deception could not resolve this contradiction, as it represented the side that contradicted its own essence. Yet, this originally opposing side formed an essential part of its self-existence. Mary’s Golden Pupil was like a cold sharp blade, piercing deep into Cunning Deception, forcing it to face a problem regarding its own existential value.

If it is the Lord of Change, then it should be uncertain with even its own represented value fluctuating, but if it’s not the Lord of Change, then there’s no need to alter its value and identity. However, if it exists in the form of the Lord of Change, that in itself is a form of constancy...

A variety of thoughts started colliding, providing answers, without any answers, with incorrect answers, logical chaos, it shouldn’t be like this, it should be like this, the essence of a Deity was being structured, collapsing, shattering along with this Crystal Maze.

"My Lord———!!"

The two-headed bird creature let out screams of anger and exhilaration.

"It’s still alive!"

"It’s about to die!"

"Not dead yet, it’s alive!"

"Because it’s alive, it must die!"

"What are you babbling about!"

However, Duanmu Huai completely ignored the roars of the Two-headed Birdman, leaping forward with his War Hammer held high, rushing towards the Great Demon in front of him. The latter waved its Magic Wand, summoning blue flames like falling meteors, crashing down in all directions.

"Whoa, what is that stuff?"

"Everyone, be careful!"

Seeing the meteors crashing down towards them, the students were shocked, but just then Ann stepped forward, raising both hands. Soon, a Magic Barrier appeared, blocking the meteoric rain from above. A series of explosions flashed on the Magic Barrier, even causing the ground to tremble.

Meanwhile, Duanmu Huai completely ignored the flames capable of melting alloys. He charged into it and emerged unscathed, vigorously smashing down the War Hammer in his hand directly upon the Two-headed Birdman’s Wand, shattering it completely. The two-headed bird creature screamed, seizing the opportunity to discard the Wand fragments and quickly fly towards the depths of the campus.

"This is my escape route! You fool!"

Flapping its wings, the Two-headed Birdman turned back to taunt Duanmu Huai.

"In terms of intellect, you’re no match for me, Carlos!"

However, when one of its heads looked back, there was no sign of Duanmu Huai; instead, it saw a Thunder Warhammer roaring past, nearly grazing the Two-headed Birdman’s head as it soared into the sky. At the same time, a massive shadow appeared out of nowhere, enveloping the Two-headed Birdman ahead.

When it turned its head forward, Duanmu Huai roared, throwing a punch into the Great Demon’s chest.

It was but a moment, or perhaps five seconds, even ten seconds.

Even the Great Demon, capable of seeing through past and future, could not foresee the future of Destruction—the power of the God of Destruction obliterated everything, past, present, and future were nonexistent within it.

Perhaps they saw it, perhaps they did not.

But none of that mattered.

Because the next moment, the Two-headed Birdman suddenly exploded in front of Duanmu Huai, spewing dark blue blood, screaming as it plummeted to the ground.

"My Lord————!"

It was its final statement, its final call.

The next moment, the ground of the campus exploded abruptly, a gigantic, blue-glowing, twisted monster emerged.
